Checked the inventory at local Pick-A-Part, new arrival, 1995 SL320, row 999 (private lot, $$$). Field trip anyway, see what's good on it.

They print me the pass with car's info, now row 305, Pick-A-Part lot = anything goes, GAME ON!!!












Total score today, those pars will all find a good use eventually, x3 R129 in the household. Need to go back and get the window motors from both sides too, ran out of time today... Need to get those NLA vacuum pods too. There will be very little left when I'm done with this one (was hit hard in the front/side)

Did you grab the radiator? I think those are NLA now.
Harv, no, front and rear end damage, salvaged what I could.

As for the radiator this pick was from M104 fitted SL320, importec still shows BEHR and VALEO still available and in stock, so is OE 129 500 13 03, checked one for the project SL500 as well, for now 129 500 01 03 is also available still as OE or CSF (never heard of them).

I will have some time this coming weekend, will see what else I could salvage. I know there is now 1997 S500 coupe, need to check to see if it has aluminum oiler tubes!

Gerry is correct, the factory stopped using aluminum tubes by early 1993 USA model year production.

However, there is a tiny chance that a previous owner had the tubes replaced by a shop. I found a set of 8 pretty blue aluminum tubes on one bank of a 1997 M119 in the junkyard once; the other bank was still plastic. Worth looking, but don't get your hopes up.

It’s always worth the 15 seconds to pull the oil filler cap on ALL M119s, and shine a light in there to double check.

There is nothing worse than pulling a valve cover on a 119 to find plastic tubes.

Ask me how I know. :doh:

Often if the engine is clean enough inside, you can tell with ambient light (about 50% of the time). Often with junkyard cars, there is so much varnish on the inside, that you have to use a flashlight or cell phone flashlight to shine in there. (cell phone flashlight does not apply to GSXR).

Yes, common parts-hoarder excuse. I bet that 50%+ of the guys on here tell that same excuse to their wives.

I've gotten the time down to remove the covers+tubes from both sides to about 40 minutes of work. The first time it was probably 2.5 hours. Working in the humid Houston sun learns one to be ..... expedient .... in one's work.

Every car at a wrecking yard has a story. Often I look at the MBs, their condition, and try to figure out what the story is. You can see well taken care of cars, poorly taken care of cars, wrecks, cars with old-lady perfume aroma in them, and so forth. It's always fun to envision who the owner was, and what they were like. Then there's the ones that were just totally trashed and abused. Those (unless they are diesel models) make me a bit sad.

Yesterday, I set foot in a Pick-A-Part yard in Wilmington, CA for the first time in about 20 years.

My "HAT's OFF" to you picker guys (Gerry, Derf and Sly to name a few) for being so diligent and willing to spend a day in a junk yard. I remember a while back a picture of Derf in what looked like an ALASKAN PARKA on a freezing cold day getting something for his 500E. I can now honestly say "IT's NOT FOR ME > I'M TO OLD FOR THIS SHIT".

I was not looking for MB parts but a shark fin antenna cover for my 2015 KIA OPTIMA. This is my Grocery Getter and all around cheap to drive car. This PAP yard showed 2 Optima's a 2012 and a 2014. The online pics showed that the cover was on the cars. Both cars were there about a week. Long story short. It seemed like I walked at least a mile trying to find these beauty's. When I finally got to see them they were as good as stripped and ready for the CRUSHER. NOTHING of USE was LEFT and I wasted about an hour and half of my time for naught.

MAKE A NOTE: I think MERCEDES PARTS are CHEAPER from the DEALER than the Japanese and Korean stuff mainly because of the packaging techniques that the Japanese and Korean's use. Parts from the dealer are priced ridiculously. This antenna cover cannot be bought separately like say MB Parts can (In most cases).

AT KIA, YOU HAVE TO BUY THE COMPLETE ANTENNA ASSEMBLY FOR $175.00 to $200.00
just to get the part that somebody STOLE off of my car. (Now I can see why they did it) The generic part on e-Bay or Amazon is about $10.00 It's just a cover. I experienced this same type of parts packaging with Mitsubishi a long time ago where you may have needed a small part worth say $10 to $20 and the Japanese Dealer would only sell the part you want in with a whole package of crap for a ridiculous price like maybe $80 and most of the stuff would never get used.

Terry. I have to say I'm with you. I have a hard enough time wrenching in my shop with all the tools at arms length. Laying in the dirt in a junk yard just doesn't do it for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I just got some nice pristine black 500E front driver & passenger door cards (with wood and leather) today, as well as an ABS/ASR pump and a couple of first aid kits to sell. And a set of drain channels for a facelift car. And a 400E badge for my MB trunk badge garage art for my shop.

Still need to get a few things off of the car, like the transmission/exhaust support and support plate, and perhaps the fan shroud, and I should probably get the airbag and wood from the passenger side along with more interior parts. A nice set of taillight lenses to be had too, damn possibilities are endless for parts with those .034s.

Completely understand not wanting to lay in the dirt in the yard. But sometimes, for the sake of "spare parts", knowing that some of them are NLA or sheer price of some components (like Ignition Control Module and such), or for our convertible tops - rubber seals and locking anchors for hard/soft tops - worth the time.

A friend of mine called me few days ago, his C280 Sport - windshield wiper mechanism is shot. Dealer quoted $560, and he wanted the storage compartment for the center console (NLA). We left pick-a-part with his little stash of parts (Wiper assembly w/motor, storage compartment, both headlight glass lenses, 4 door pins and shift knob badge) $16 total.

As long as it's early in the morning and requires not stress of removal of major mechanical components, it's almost therapeutic to me =)

I should “Never say Never”, there may be a day that I will want something for my 500E that is not available thru this board or a parts source. That would interest me way more than the KIA crap but I will have to be highly motivated and desperate before that happens.

IMOP, Parts Picking is for the “Younger Enthusiast” out there.

Awe c'mon Terry! You haven't lived until you pull a part and find a snake looking at you from 2 feet away. 7Delta was pulling a part for me and found that he had a visitor with his example, about a 2 foot shedding of snake skin in the door card. It is always nice to have a helper or just make a lot of racket inside the car before you get prone under a seat.

I just keep scoring wrecks. I'm probably going to part out my 96 SL320. Car runs but has that sick sweet smell that makes me think that the head gasket is bad. I drove it 70 miles before parking it in the back of the shop and it did not overheat. I need a few bits and bobs for the 90 300SL 5 speed but expect to make it disappear pretty quickly. I also have 2 W123 diesel and 2 twin turbo w220 S600's that I want to make disappear.

Bought a rust-free W124 chassis with doors yesterday.
The chassis will be used for cutting out pieces to weld in my 420 project.
One or 2 doors will be used for my 400E. This doors are cosmeticly better.

A little while ago I scored a set of locks and ignition lock tumbler from an e420.

I almost scored a second lock and tumbler set from a 300e, but I couldn't get the ignition lock tumbler out of this one.

On both of these cars, I had the keys. It's very rare to find a key in the cars at the wrecking yards.

Anyone scored any cool stuff from the wrecking yards, lately?

Got up very early this morning, rain (but somewhat warm), decided to "check the inventory" at pick-a-part... Sorted by year, oldest first... 1987 300E. crap condition, but Carlsson 1/6 wheels, fresh fresh photo. Next, worth looking at 2001 SL500 with sport package. Boots, tools, gloves and pickup trunk, we go for a drive.

Carlsson wheels 17", unfortunately 2 have very deep curb rash, one almost have to either machine the all the edges down or weld build/weld it up. Not wort my time. Moving on to R129. Certainly not the first one to "visit" this car. Nothing worth inside, hardtop (on the inventory photo) now gone, wet, mildewed and not much left for me to take. Tail lights shot, lower moldings missing or broken, rear bumper gone, front is damaged, tow covers missing.





Surprising enough, fog lights intact!!! Got those, someone can use them for sure. About to walk away, little disappointing... Suddenly a light bulb goes off: 2001, big brakes, front and rear, same as SA, 334mm and 300mm!!! 1 hour flat:



So, Red Devil is getting break upgrades!!! I was going to use ATE SL600 units suited for 320mm rotors, but now those will be for sale soon.

Drew, these are 17", probably, 7.5 One edge has been "shaved off" by the curb so bad, that it would really need to be welded on to make it right. I was hoping to use them on my C280 (first set of those brand new Carlsson's I bought in 2001 from Tirerack when they were a dealer), just remember how great they looked on that car.

Decided to stop by a local pick-a-part, and just a proof that their online "public" inventory is not always right, this one was listed as "1991 500 series". Sure didn't think it would be SL500, but someone picked this thing quite a bit before me

Now that I have a complete set of spare fogs, going to try the Cerium Oxide on them to see how much can the glass be polished back to "life". Anyone tried?

Under the hood, someone definitely went through! However, it does have aluminum oiler tubes, I may make another trip tomorrow just for them. Didn't have all the tools with me today...

It’s interesting though, very few high end models make it to the yards. I’ve only seen two 12-cylinder (M120) 140s in the yards — one a coupe and one a sedan.

Never one time seen a 126 coupe (550SEC) in the Houston or Baltimore LKQ yards over the past 10 years.

210s, 202s, 140s, and 220s have now replaced 124s, 201s, 123s and 126s in the yards over the past 5-6 years. There is usually a couple 124s in the yards, but typically now only 1-2 at a time. Used to be 4-6 at any given time.

Starting to see more and more 163s (MLs) over the past few years. Occasionally have seen a 221 s-class and 203s and even 211s and 204s when they are hit hard. I always prefer the older cars that aren’t hit, just retired due to being old, non running or too costly to keep on the road.

The sweet spot years for pick n pull cars is now the 1998-2004 time frame. That’s 15-20 years old.

It’s the 1989 560SEL I just mentioned a couple mins ago in the other thread. The yard mis-labeled it. Trust me, I’m all over it, and have visited and cannibalized it already. 040 black over black leather. . Look at the photos and you will see it’s a sedan.

The VIN also confirms it’s an .126.039 (sedan). A coupe VIN would be a 126.045er.......

Yes, yes indeed, the scene is changing and has changed quite a bit! We moved to US in 1990, almost 30 years later all the W201s, 123s, 126s and 140s are getting to be more rare every time I go. 210s, 202s, 203 and 220s seem to be in site. Few years back, W163 were usually in the private lots, and now are frequent to to pick-a-part lots...

This particular one, in Spotsylvania VA, I basically "grew up" in. It once was "All Foreign" that changed owners many times, I found my old 1985 Audi Coupe GT there after I sold it 14-15 years ago (was a little sad to see to wasted). Same junk yard I found my old 1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 (sold in 1992) as a complete bucket.

This is the very same junk yard where my little brother found a complete 1986 W201 2.3 16V with a complete kit (I believe it was made by Pebra). The car was an automatic and a rust bucket, but the kit, ohh that kit!!! I think it was in 2001, needless to say, the entire kit with all the trimmings came home (enjoy a pic from 1mgpx Sony camera, just brought the kit home)

Row52 is very incomplete, and does not have ANY of the LKQ yards that I have frequented for years.

I used to think that the Houston LKQ hat trick was da Bomb. But. You haven’t lived until you’ve done five LKQ’s in a day.

I got four more trunk logos the other day for my garage wall art. My record is getting 10 trunk logos in a single day.

Hey now! This was in the early 2000's, I was on the budget, those were hard to come by back then, the set came from Canada. But seriously, I know that usually Depo is crap, but, these W201 Euros were spot on, perfect glass and great fitment. Looked great compare to ugly US stock :124:

Parts yards rock. Yesterday I got a pristine parchment centre console, pre facelift headlamps, some NLA C124 Interior trim plastic, 3x ignition tumbler assemblies, 2 wipers, 2 m111 throttle bodies, 1 c124 leather seat, a door card and some other bits all for £60. The sheetmetal is from rust free trunk areas since those repair panels are NLA new. Any time I see one without rust I cut them out for future use.
