ADMIN EDIT: Previous title was "What value for a rusted 1992 500E?", now changed to a For Sale listing per post #9 below.

So I have had this rough shape 1992 500E for awhile now that has been a work in progress but I am in a situation where I need to downsize my fleet as I only have so much space..

96,055 miles.

Lots of rust, headliner sags, no ripped seats, rubbers are showing age, hood needs lined up, needs exhaust, depo headlights need installed, upper wiring harness has been replaced, have new fuel pumps to replace current that leaks from crimp at casing, needs stereo work, needs diagnostic port replaced and rewired at cuts, will need other electrical bugs worked out..

it does fire up and will drive, definitely not road worthy though. It’s pretty much a perfect candidate for a restoration if someone could undertake the rust underneath. Rockers and trunk area being the worst..

Starting at $9,500. Who ever offers the most from that starting point will take new ownership. Prefer to keep it in the US as I’m not willing to go through the headache of international sale. Car is located near Martinsburg WV, 1.5hr west of Washington DC.

This 500E also comes with a new in package Hot Wheels 500E!

Re: What value for a rusted 500E?

Not even the low odometer can overcome that level or rust... your primary buyers will be interested in it as a parts car. The cost to restore would far exceed what it would cost to buy a rust-free car. A body-shop owner might be willing to take on the challenge, or maybe an overseas buyer, but otherwise it's pretty likely to end up parted out.

Value is extremely difficult to estimate in this condition but it may be tough to break into five figures.

:runexe:

Even JC220 hasn't seen rust like that
Well, you did :D Remember russian E60 Limited?

Concerning this rusty car above- either you take 50.000+ and make it "great again", maybe even more than 50....Or you dump it for like 6-8 grant, it will be gone fast....

Unfortunately the metal sheets are all NLA, and can't be sourced from standard W124. Its too gone to save

I think you are talking in the $8-11K range for the car, depending on the buyer. I've seen some pretty bad cars go for far more than $11K.

I recommend you consign it to an auction, such as Mannheim or Copart. You could always list it on GCFSB or BaT as well. But sadly, I think GSXR may be right. Perhaps someone here on the forum would be interested in it.

Other option would be to part it to the vultures here. There are MANY parts that would be of interest to folks -- just need to take the time and effort to remove the parts and sell them.

As Gerry will confirm, I'm usually in favor of trying to save 036's... but Stage V cancer is terminal. There have been salvage/wrecked cars documented in the classifieds here selling for well over $10k, but those typically had minimal rust (or at least, not visible in photos).

If you don't want to part it out yourself (massive amount of time required, and shipping stuff isn't fun)... some sort of auction would maximize the sale price. BaHaT may not accept a car in this condition, but they do have a "parts" section where it might be offered with no reserve.

Otherwise you'll have to toss out a number for asking price and see what happens.

🎯

Any word on if the buyer will be resurrecting it, or parting out? Or if it's staying in USA?
