1993 500e Running hot? Or not?

So, on 93+ weather on a traffic jam the car runs really hot. Then back to normal when at highway speed.

Normal? See pic.

 that is definitely too hot.

You should check your
1) viscous fan
2) radiator if it is been replaced
3) water pump
4) two other fans in a front if they kick in

That's about 5-10 degrees hotter than my car runs in the same outside temp weather, with the AC cranked. And we have that weather every day from June through October. Indeed, you may have a viscous fan problem, or your aux fan may not be kicking in.

Also, that oil pressure is low -- I had the same issue and it was a lazy sensor at the bottom of the oil filter flange. An easy 10 minute replacement that you can do at oil changing time. Budget about $80 for a new MB sender.

Holy shit. I'd piss my pants when seeing that, then step out and use my wet pants to wave air into the engine compartment o_O

What Roma said: check your viscous fan. But there's more wrong, because at that temp your aux fans should've been on quite some time, cooling everything down!

That's about 115C. Way, way too hot. Especially in San Francisco, where a "hot day" is 85F. :)

Since you mentioned "traffic jam", I'm guessing this is when the car is not moving, or moving very slowly. If so, make sure the twin electric fans are working normally on both low speed (when AC is on) and high speed) (when engine temp is over 107C). A common failure is a broken wire at the resistor behind the driver's headlight, or it could be as simple as blow fuse.

If the electric fans are working, you've got some detective work to do...

:detective:

This could be OK but not at 35-36c !! at +50C you expect things like that.. still Normal for these engines nothing fall apart. The other day we raced a 500E in 45C weather, engine temp was 105-110C with AC.

Was that the temperature while you were in motion? If so, that "might" be too hot as well for a car in motion even with the AC on. How fast we're you going?

My car has some relay installed (assuming while in Japan) where one of the aux fans (one in front is always on). Has anyone heard of this being done? Def keeps the temp in check, but its always a bit noisy...might try to revert it back to stock.

My service tech did mention that he had a few customers that had some relay installed to keep the fans on at all times vs trying to fix what was wrong with the cooling system and the downside (aside from the constant noise) was the need to replace the fans sooner than later.

I'm runnig a Cool Harness that turns the fans on earlier, but they turn off when the temperature drops bellow 85C.

Thanks for the info.

I was not moving at all! Static. When moving it would drop in temperature. I do hear the fans on but did not check if both were on. I did have the A/C running too.

I was not in San Francisco. Once I started moving along at freeway speeds the needle dropped to just above 80. The outside temps were still in the 90's. The temps in SF were in the mid 70's.

I have always read that this car runs hot. Hence the fried harness issues. (changed them fyi...) So I was not alarmed by the readings. But once it got to the point where I took the pic it never got hotter.

Which is the vicious fan?

Something is not right. You'll need to make sure the electric fans are working as expected. With the key on (or engine running), if you disconnect the 2-pin sensor in front of the airbox, the fans should turn on high speed. If not, that needs to be fixed. Also, when the AC is running, the fans are almost always running on low speed, if the ambient temps are reasonably warm (80-85F or higher).

Viscous fan clutch is the main engine fan, but at idle, the electric fans likely are more important:

All this has been covered ad nauseum in the past, search the forum...

Guys,

As mentioned previously in this thread, my car's electric aux fans are always on (apparently done intentionally by previous owner). Its loud, and during winter my car never gets close to 80 degrees. Due to the constant noise, I want to turn the electric fan operation back to stock form when it only comes on when the engine hits a certain temp. Question...I have no idea how this mod was preformed. Is there an obvious way this could have been accomplished that I could pin point and thus return the fan operation back to normal?

Have you checked the 2-pin sensor in front of the airbox, to see if any type of resistor is being used? Bellow is a picture of the 2-pin sensor in front of the airbox with a resistor attached.

1) Steve is correct, check for resistors added as shown above.

2) If the temp never hits 80C, you have a defective thermostat. Replace it with a new OE or OEM (Behr, not Wahler).

3) Less likely, but possible, is a bad dash gauge temp sender showing a lower temp than actual.

Normal operating temps, even in freezing weather, is still over 80C... usually 82-88°C. The fans can't be the cause of sub-80C temps as the t-stat simply shuts off the flow to the radiator if it's too cold.
