1994 E420 W124. This is a lovely classic sports sedan. You probably know what you are looking at, but if you want some quick background, the first 6 minutes of this video give an entertaining synopsis of the model’s development. E420 gives 80% of the features (including that great V8 block) of the E500 but at 20% of the current collector’s price and without the finicky suspension.

I looked for a good example for a long time. It’s a solid, smooth classic that feels built like a tank. This one has been well taken care of and still has relatively low miles for a 31 year old driver. Even at 31, it has ABS brakes, ASR traction control, driver/passenger airbags, heated seats, seat memory, and has more than enough power for today's highway speeds. There are no warning lights showing and registration/inspection is good until 1/26.

The photos are flattering, but the body is in great shape. The paint is original, and while it is still holding up, it does have some age-related chips and wear. The color is what sold me - Malachite Green. The interior leather has marks and cracks, but no rips or seam issues. The dash looks great with no cracks. The radio is original with a bluetooth module professionally added so you can connect your phone or devices. The carpet looks good under weather mats. All the glass is original without any chips or cracks. Great oil pressure.

Since I purchased it 2 years ago, here are the things that I have done:
  • New hoses, and filter at the fuel pump
  • New serpentine belt and fan clutch
  • New OEM AC compressor and AC receiver/drierNew passenger rear window regulator
  • New OEM brake rotors, pads, and flexible hoses
  • New Yokohama Ascend GT tires
  • Transmission pan gasket, filter, and correct Mercedes fluid

And I found a correct color, unbroken third brake light! IYKYK! This car always starts right up for me. It only gets annoyed when it doesn’t get driven - and that’s my problem. I have a few other cars and can’t justify keeping this if I don’t give it the attention that it deserves. It’s a great survivor and I would like to see it go on surviving and making someone else happy. It is not a show car and it is not perfect. Still, it is a pleasure to drive and makes a great useable classic. Included is an image of current Hagerty values. Clean blue title

Nice car, and rare option package! ASR, heated orthopedic seats, and rear reading lamps. Only missing rear roller blind / sun shade.

Photos appear to be from 2 years ago though, unless there's a typo from the 2024 service reported on Autocheck. 15 years and 100mi in rust-belt states is worrisome, I'd want to see photos underneath. Sounds like it has the usual distributor cap moisture issue which may have prompted the sale, lol.

:seesaw:

Found some photos of this car at auction in Nov-2019 in GA with 114kmi.
