FOR SALE 1994 E500 Limited, Sapphire Black/Black/Gray, 136kkm, €69k (Bergen, Norway)

Hi all,

I’m currently considering this E500 limited that is advertised here in Norway.

VIN = WDB1240361C141976

Datacard: https://www.lastvin.com/vin/rjKDXd4am0eEpN38B

Just to clarify up front: I have no connection to the seller and have never dealt with him before.

I’m fairly familiar with these cars and W124s in general, but this particular example is located quite far from me. Seeing it in person would require both a flight and taking time off work, so naturally I’d like to minimize the chances of a wasted trip.

I have been in contact with the seller and he seems cooperative so far. He has offered to send additional photos of the underbody and any specific areas I would like documented, which is helpful.

Some basic facts about the car:
  • Originally a Japanese market car
  • Imported to Norway in 2017
  • 126,000 km at import
  • 136,000 km currently
  • Two owners in Norway
  • Asking price 749 000,- NOK (~€69k EUR, ~$79k USD)
The asking price feels fairly ambitious, possibly a bit on the high side for a 136k km car, although the Norwegian market can be quite thin and prices tend to vary.

As is often the case with Japanese imports, the documentation appears rather limited, at least based on what is shown in the listing.

Before I consider travelling to see the car I thought I would post it here in case anyone notices something I might have missed or has thoughts about the car.

If there are specific areas you would ask the seller to photograph in detail before making the trip, feel free to mention them. The seller has already said he is willing to provide additional pictures.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like a nice example. The mileage is nothing for these cars albeit a lot of parts are becoming NLA. I bought my 93 500E with 87K miles in 2004 and now it has 143+K miles with no major problems.
If I were you I would ask for photos of the engine compartment, the undercarriage, the battery compartment in the trunk as well as the underside of the battery compartment.

How about any accident damage?

Good Luck:)

Having been researching these fairly heavily recently, I would say the price is a spot on if I’m using my conversion correctly.
Had it not been for import duties I would definitely have had this car on my radar also.
From having a quick look at seems like a really nice car and the mileage is about as low as you will find for one of these I think in this price range.

Have you seen the one for sale in Nice France? Also a nice car priced at a similar level.

I think some people here are a bit too quick to call this a “top example” with a justified price and mileage. Looking at the car more closely, there are quite a few issues that shouldn’t be ignored at this level.

From what I can see:
  • Front bumper has paint flaking in several areas
  • Right fog light has a cracked lens and rust on the reflector, and the unit appears slightly misaligned
  • Left fog light also shows rust on the reflector
  • Cracks in the front right strut top mount rubber
  • Windshield is worn
  • Rear lights show signs of clear coat deterioration
  • Only one key
  • Rear electric sunblind is not working
  • Scratch on the left front fender
  • Sun-faded trim on roof and around windows
  • Dead pixels in the outside temperature display
  • Clear coat cracking on multiple panels
  • Rear center console wood trim blind is defective
  • Faulty switch for the front right headrest
The wheels have reportedly been refurbished, which is a positive, but then they’ve fitted them with Triangle tires, which is… a bit odd on a car positioned at this level. It doesn’t exactly signal a no compromise ownership approach.

On top of that, the car appears to have no real service history or documentation.

Individually, some of these items are not a big deal. But combined, and especially at this price level, it paints a very different picture than a “top car”.

Low mileage alone doesn’t justify the price without proper documentation. And cosmetic/mechanical neglect like this suggests the car hasn’t been kept to the standard you would expect from a premium example.

I’m not saying it’s a bad car. But calling it a top example at this price, without addressing these points, seems overly optimistic.

I'm still trying to figure out if ROW 036's could be ordered with standard rear glass, as seen on this car. In North America, all 036's came with the compound rear glass.

:scratchchin:

Bakruten ser ut til å være en standard enhet med synlige varmeelementer, jeg er ikke sikker på om det stemmer for en 951 Limited, eller om den kan ha blitt byttet ut på et tidspunkt.

Translation:
The rear window appears to be a standard unit with visible heating elements, I'm not sure if that's true for a 951 Limited, or if it may have been replaced at some point.
