Hmmm....looks promising...any of you GA guy's know this car? Not too many rolling around in metro Atlanta are there?

I'd send it to Jono at BlueRidge MB for a full PPI before plunking down nearly $20k... but yes, it does look decent.

:apl:

This car is not familiar to me. Yes, even in a city as large as Atlanta an E500E sighting is rare. I agree. It looks good.

huhhh?

" . . . This particular car had fairly high miles and not the best example having come from the midwest, but still a kick in the ass to drive." (a direct quote from ad)

Am I missing something or did I just go to the wrong marketing class? Or maybe they went to "dealer" school in the NY/NJ area . . . Maybe I'm just too jaded and can't handle the truth. Regardless, remember that old saying "trust, yes, but verify"

It does sound interesting, but as a car of this age approaches 100K miles, there's likely significant R&R just around the corner....U&L harnesses (hopefullly already done, but current dealer can't verify), A/C refurb (again dealer doesn't know, my guess it's original), suspension soft parts replacement (same again, no info and very likely not yet refurb'ed). Add to this the "hope" that the car is straight and has no collision history.

For 20K, I would expect a car that drove out and performed as new without having to do significant maintenance for a while.

As I see it, this car is priced at the top end of the market, and could easily need $5K+ in work over the next 20-25K miles.

I measure this car (and the other low mile examples that have been popping up) against Dr No's meticulously maintained example...if I were pursing a low mileage car, I'd be willing to pay a few K more for a car with documented condition & ownership rather than take a chance on a high-teen $ car that is more likely than not to need the same stuff (that DN's car's already received) in the not so distant future.

When I was buying and driving decade old BMWs, I found that it was a better value to find a 100+k mile car that had already had the major components refurbed than to spend up for the sub 100K cars that soon needed those expensive maintenance items.

Based on communication with the dealer today, they don't know beans about this car.

I generally agree. It's been said here before, documented proactive maintainence is critical in purchasing any older used vehicle, especially an enthusiast car like ours and many soft items will be in need of attention approaching the 100k mark. Conversely an honest low milage car that is driven regularly should have no need for any transmision, timing chain, drive train/ mechanical concerns for a good long time. The great majority of costly repairs are due to usage and heat cycling, not time. I agree this car doesn't appear to be a verifiable example (according to the sellers own comments). The Doktor no car which is a proactively maintained and low milage car is a somewhat rare example of the best of both and is priced accordingly.

I have heard of this car, if its the same one it use to go to MB Buckhead for service. I was always told of a car with renntech stuff....just never saw it.

EDIT:

CONFIRMED, talked to my tech buddy and he has driven and worked on the car @ Buckhead. Said it was it was very clean.

Yep, the only maintenance info the Dealer that's offering the car has is a 60K service stamp in the owners manual from 2002....he only offered that after I pressed him over the phone to offer "something" to substantiate his claim of excellent condition....with only approx. 13k miles driven in the past 8-9 yrs, it's been a garage queen sitting up for the most part in recent years.

I'm concerned about deteriorated soft parts/leaking seals, lack of recent maintenance, and yet to be know, but needed refurbs. Otherwise the car sounds like it has a lot of potential. Just don't know what would be required & cost to get everything back up to specs., and at 22k, that's a gamble I'm gonna pass on.

Dealer says he's getting some attention/inquiries (including mine)...personally, I'm turned-off by a seller that starts upping his price because he's getting interest in his car. My hunch is that he bought the car on the cheap due to it being a fresh trade-in at a nearby Caddie dealership (dealer say the Caddie dealer contacted him and offered it to him the day it traded in).

I suspect the dealer feels he has a hot item and is trying to score a home run margin on it. I guess there's nothing wrong with this approach...profit makes the world go round. But, I don't think he understands the importance of documentation and current maintenance in supporting the market value of a car like this.

For those watching this one...originally offered at 19.9K by this dealer (Momentum), price soon thereafter removed, then most recently posted again at 23K.

I inquired yesterday to attempt to feel them out on their "moving target" pricing of this car....Here is their reply received today:

"We have a real offer of $19,500 (from a previous customer). At this point, we have agreed to sell the car for that amount. We are holding the car for him until the close of business on Monday. Based on the response we have had, I feel strongly that $19,500 is in line with the market value."

*hahaha* one of the oldest tricks in the book !

The car will still be there on Tuesday.....

hmmmm...if that's the case, in spite of all their game playing, 19.5 is their number right now....

Too bad these guys have taken such a sleezy approach to promoting the car...the vibe is just not positive on this one.

Hello gang... Yes I bought the car. The dealer is replacing the headliner and it should arrive to Miami next week. I have always wanted to drive a four door Porsche and the Panamera or Cayenne never did anything to me.

By the way the most civilised forum I have ever been at, congrats.

Why don't you start an OWNER page in the "Owners and their Cars" sub-board ?!?

:welcome:

Well that explains that...glad to hear someone attached to the board picker her up.

Did you get a ppi and have it checked out beforehand, or just pull the trigger blind?

I (and probably others) suspected that the car might really be nice, and have some Renntech goodies, but to my knowledge, no one was close enough to take a detailed look, and the dealer wasn't much help in describing/explaining things...is this a particularly special car in this regard?

Looking forward to vicariously enjoying your car through the written words to come.

I happen to be in the automobile business (not M-B) and a friend who knows the selling dealer did all the necessary introductions.

I noticed that the sentiment about the dealer in this thread was not particularly positive but I was treated with respect and the owner was very attentive. Maybe the appropriate references helped or maybe I was lucky, never the less I bought the car blind based on my assessment of being an honest car with a verifiable pedigree.

As far as the price goes, I wanted the best E500 I could find so it doesn't bother me paying a small premium for the right specimen.(One owner, lots of upgrades including all the original equipment coming with the car, etc.) I hope that the car is what was described to me and I will pass along all my findings once I take possession. This is going to be fun....:progress:

Congrats on the purchase. Yet another .036 headed to South Florida. Sounds like it's time to organize a meetup my fellow neighbors.

Jordi,

Are you the guy with the Porsche crest next to the rear license plate???

Was also your car at the Porsche annual concourse at Mandarin Oriental?

Congrads on a nice car James. What other Renntech items are on the car besides the muffler? Does it have the 6.0 liter motor=0)

By the way the most civilised forum I have ever been at, congrats.
By the way, thank you for the compliment.

It is a testament to a great group of international 036 and 034 enthusiasts that we have had this dedicated community since 2003 (first with 500Ecstasy.com and since 2008/2009 with this board).

Jordi,

Are you the guy with the Porsche crest next to the rear license plate???

No that's not me. Fellow member OttoB lives near the Mandarin and as a 964 turbo owner he has been known to be found loitering at certain Porsche events. You can verify if it was him by looking at his owners page. Member maw1124 mentioned his plate being registered as "MB-PORSH" though I've never seen a photo of his car.

From what I can gather from this site we have 6 members in the Miami area: JordiC, OttoB, maw1124, Zuffenhausen, 550Maranello, and now 24hrslemans. Surely there are other owners in town that are not members here (poor souls) as I have spotted a handful of .036's on local roads during the last 10 years or so. If more members would fill in their user location we could get a more accurate number of Miami area owners. Regardless, 6 members is enough for an entertaining get together. I will try and organize one this summer.

Here is a quick pic of mine for future reference. Eventually I will get around to posting a proper owner page for myself.

Glad to hear that things went well for you in interacting with this dealer. I was treated quite differently in my attempts to gain insight into this car. As I attempted to discuss this car's condition, it was quickly apparent that this dealer not only knew very little about the car's history (as it was a trade in at another dealer-selling dealer had no interaction with the last buyer),but the really didn't know much about this make/model itself, other than what they had cut and pasted from the internet description. I tactfully tried to explain that any of these cars have special maintenance and care needs, and that to make an offer, I needed additional background on the car....i was basically stiffed and told, the car is excellent based on "their" evaluation alone (which one has to be skeptical of given their inherit profit motive), and it would be up to me to prove them otherwise (which I was contemplating spending some money to do PPI work on my own, but...) then came the pricing game of the original list of "19.9K" which turned to "call for price" then finally "23.9K", so at that point, I could only deduce that this dealer was "all about the profit", which further raised my concern's of how objectively this car may have been presented, and likely not worth any more of my limited time.

I suspect that the difference was that "your friend" was the intermediary...the dealer stated that a "regular customer" had made the offer that was accepted; therefore, I can only conclude that the dealer was willing to offer this "regular customer" some degree of courtesy that was not afforded me,k even if only during the communication process.

I knew the car had potential, but the nature of the interaction/feedback and pricing games gave it a greater risk than reward feeling to me.

That would be in stark contrast to the way that the "Dr No" car was recently offered/advertised, and the way this car is currently being promoted:

These are highly discretionary purchases....sometimes it's about a lot more that the car and the money...regardless, I hope the car turns out to be everything you expect it to be.

Jeff, I have had several experiences similar to yourspassing on some outstanding cars just because there was not chemistry betweenmyself and the seller.
I am hopeful that the car will live to its expectations andI will pass along an honest assessment as soon as I lay my hands on it. At lastif you don't mind me asking, were you pursuing this car or you were justfeeling the pulse of the market for such automobile?

Jordi,

Thanks for your reply. I met the aforementioned gentleman (not the guy in the photo) at the Porsche Councours which I was displaying some of my Porsches and as a matter of fact his 500E was displayed on the lawn as well as participating in the class of special interest.

...and you are right we should get together. By the way your car looks good with the evo's.

Ps. I am attaching an article I did on myself recently for the PCA magazine that I hope you find entertaining, since I don't have an owner's page yet in the forum.

Indeed, chemistry between buyer and seller can have a HUGE role in the eventual sale ... or non-sale ... of a car. It's something that buyers should keep in mind.

I was seriously considering this car....ultimately, just wasn't in the cards for me (i.e., timing, communication, readily available info, etc.)...that's just the way it plays out sometimes.

For the reasons listed previously, there is a degree of information and confidence that can often only be obtained by purchasing or at least talking with an individual owner...no secret there....sometimes the dealer has this sort of info, sometimes not.

I have purchased unique cars from dealers, after researching and contacting the former owner (s) or otherwise performing DD). Knowing the history and "story" of a car means a lot to me personally...maybe not so much to others, everyone's different obviously.

This car is back on the market, asking $73,000 (!). Listing 85,300 miles now.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 RENNtech - SOLD 🏁 | Speedart Motorsports

From 1991 to 1994, Mercedes-Benz sold a high-performance version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E (W124.036). The 500 E was created in close cooperation with Porsche. With its engineering department being fully occupied with the development of the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche in 1989 to redesign the W124 chassis to shoehorn the 5.0L V8 used in the SL into it, along with the necessary changes on the suspension system and drive train. When the car was ready, it was found that its widened fenders didn’t fit through the W124 assembly line in Sindelfingen in three places. Hence Porsche was also commissioned to assemble the car. As a side-effect this arrangement provided workload for Porsche’s plant, as the company was in crisis at the time, and its factory capacity was underutilized.
During production Mercedes-Benz delivered parts to Porsche’s “Reutter-Bau” ex 959 plant in Zuffenhausen where the 500 E chassis were hand-assembled. When finished the chassis were transported by truck to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen to be painted. As soon as the paint was dry the varnished chassis were then shipped back to Porsche’s “Rössle-Bau” in Zuffenhausen where the engine was put in and the car completed. For final inspection and delivery the vehicles again were transported to Sindelfingen. This process took a full 18 days per car. Design began in 1989. Called ‘500 E’ through model year 1993, for final model year 1994 it was face-lifted along with the rest of the range and renamed to ‘E 500’.
In Germany, the 500 E first came on sale in late 1990, making its first appearance in Mercedes-Benz catalog on October 1, 1990, with a retail price of DM134,520. By January 2, 1993, the price had risen to DM145,590, and would stay at it until the car went off the market in late 1994. In the United States, the car first became available as a 1992 model with a retail price of $81,800 and was available until MY 1994.
The 500 E has a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine derived from the 500 SL (R129) roadster. Sports car braking performance also came from SL components: front SL 500 300 mm disks with 4-piston calipers came installed on the 1992 and early 1993 cars. The later 1993, and all 1994 cars came with the upgraded 320 mm set taken from the 600 SL. Rear brakes on all years were 278 mm brakes from the 500 SL. In the USA, the 500 E came fully equipped, with the only options available to the buyer being a dealer-installed CD changer and an integrated cellular telephone. The 500 E was only with four seats in left hand drive, with the four leather seats supplied by Recaro (the fronts heated). Called the “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” by the press, performance tests of the day yielded impressive results: 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) times of 5.5 seconds and acceleration through the quarter-mile (0.4 km) in 14.1 seconds at 163 km/h (101 mph). The top speed was redline limited at 6,000 rpm to 260 km/h (~160 mph). With its aggressive stance: 1.5 inches wider track, 0.9 inch lower profile, flared fenders, side skirts, front air-dam and wide tires, the 500 E is easily distinguished from its lesser brethren. Because of its look, limited numbers, hand-built construction, and unique pedigree, the 500 E is already considered a “classic”, even within Mercedes-Benz.
This example is the face lifted iteration of the last and final year and one of the 1,528 units imported in United States in its most appealing configuration of Black Pearl and all Black Recaro leather sport seats. The car retains its original paint with absolutely no respray or body repairs, further substantiated by its CarFax report.
The E500 was originally delivered to Park Place Motorcars of Dallas and was sold for the first time to Mr. Jon W. Kilgore of the Chicago Bears on July 1995. Upon delivery Mr. Kilgore commissioned Hartmut Feyhl of RENNtech to enhance the already outstanding performance of the sport sedan for an added cost to the already hefty MSRP of $82,975.
In de rigueur fashion, the car received all RENNtech upgrades that were available at the time including a visible stainless sport muffler, a carbon fibre air box with high flow filtering, an upgraded Fuel Management E-PROM with unrestricted speed limit and a beautiful set of 17″ AMG staggered mono block wheels. RENNtech was instructed to retain all the original equipment that were replaced and to this day they are available to the purist who desires to return the car to an absolute state of OEM including the original “eight hole” 16 inch alloy rims.
The E500 was subsequently sold to the owner of Speedart Motorspots, James Hondros on April 2012 who has been the sole custodian ever since.
During Mr. Hondros 6 years/10,000 miles ownership there was no expense spared on maintaining this special machine and an ample documentation binder is on hand attesting to such care.
Due to the new owner’s constant passion of properly curating such a significant automobile a front set of 334 mm big Brembo brakes “Mercedes Siver Arrow” type and 300 mm ATE rears with cross drilled rotors and stainless lines were fitted including a full set of H&R 20 mm hub centric spacers resulting to a greater stopping power and further enhancing the muscular stance by filling the gap on the bulging fenders as well as adding to the traction ability. Just like with the previous owner every original part was stowed away.
Speedart Motorsports is proud to present for your consideration this autobahn express in spectacular condition, both cosmetically and mechanically as a complete package that includes keys, books, service manuals, CD changer with 2 cartridges, ownership & maintenance records, OEM car cover and the original window sticker as well as all the aforementioned factory spares.

Still unknown if the car has any RENNtech accessories besides the muffler. Even the airbox does not appear to be a RENNtech unit.

Oh, and it has Silver Arrow front brakes... nice touch. Can't re-install those included stock 16" wheels though.

:pc1:

It’s amazing how a glued on recaro tag (from a recaro aircraft seat no less) and a porsche manufaktur sticker will get a car into the $73k league. Unless I’m missing a major renntech engine mod this pricing is rather “enthusiastic”

There are at least five Dealer/Flipper cars currently on the market which have sat for eight months or longer. I predict that this one will eventually join them.

FL/Chicago (Oct 18) https://www.500eboard.co/forums/ind...2-500e-silver-gray-51kmi-67k-chicago-il.12538

Are there any other dealer/flipper cars that are accumulating significant "Lot Rot?"

This is one of the cars I PPI'd during my W124036 search. I had it inspected in August 2019. I could live with the results but the car did not 'sing to me' plus the price was more than I was willing to pay regardless of the Renntech upgrades. It belonged to the selling dealer's owner. I did not make an offer. It has been marked as SOLD by the dealer since so @Admin may want to update this post. Don't think this car has resurfaced anywhere else to my knowledge. This dealer sells bespoke automobiles so I am always looking at their window displays when I drive by them.

+7 with me if you still live in Miami-Dade. Would be neat to have a socially distant .036 get together for cars n coffee etc. I haven't really seen any others on the road in the last 5 years I would say. I saw a beat up E420 the other day and the driver gave me a thumbs up, but that's about it.
