Wait. What? Is Leistung Autohaus relocating to the other coast?

Yes. This has been in the works for a while. Leistung (Matt + Ann Marie) is leaving California and moving to rural, southern Virginia.

Yes, the pull of being able to use “real” red chlorinated brake cleaner is that strong ....

i have been looking to replace mine, but it is lower on the priority list.

however, when I checked dealer rev parts sites, I see the glass anywhere from $650-$850.

is there something different about these in comparison to what I would get from the Dealer?
Any glass you get via a REVPARTS site *WILL BE FACTORY MB DEALERSHIP GLASS*.

Note that most REVPARTS dealers will not ship glass, and only offer it for local pickup. That means you would have to go to their location to pick it up. It also means they wouldn’t charge shipping, though.

Yes, I saw that they specify no shipping, local pickup only. That works for me because Mercedes SF is not far from me and price for that item is pretty good.

Guess I should get one before it goes NLA on me

MB Classic Parts (NOT the RevParts sites) says that this piece of glass is still available. You may want to check with a main dealer and have them check their Paragon system for availability.

I guess I should get a rear window for local pickup here, to join the new windshield I have in my basement.
I really need to ask my local dealer about both front & rear glass. I have zero in the hoard, and drove one of my cars the other day which I had forgotten how badly sandblasted the front glass is. Ugh.

:spend:

has anyone contacted a local dealership recently (i.e., in the last few weeks) to inquire about USA inventory levels?

:pc1:

My dealer has confirmed that the E500E back glass is DISCONTINUED / NLA. Zero stock in the US; zero stock in Germany, no overstock available and no parts sitting in US dealers.

Perhaps I'm asking a question I already know the answer to, but what is the solution? I've imported whole crates of parts from Europe and Australia in the past. Is there a dismantler overseas that might have access to parts cars? I'd be willing to organize transport / logistics if we can get a few of them at once.

Perhaps the standard single laminate glass from the 300E/E320/400E/E420 are still available??

I'd expect standard rear glass to be easily available locally, it just doesn't look as nice as the fancy compound rear glass.

Used rear compound glass is likely to have delamination near the edges, plus it's difficult to remove intact... let alone ship overseas.

:duck:

Oh, thank God. I thought there was a specific rear glazing for this car. I can find used OEM glass quite easily. It's a bit of a hobby of mine to find stamped OEM glass, in fact, for peanuts at a local salvage yard. Phew!

I agree with that ,Dave. We tried to remove a rear glass when we parted out that 500E wreck that i had........it shattered into a 1000 pieces.

It took me several tried to find a yard willing to remove the very nice Pilkington glass from a junked W201 for my Cosworth project. I paid a bit more than I wanted for them to have a glass guy they knew come to the yard and cut it out. It's possible but it does take some convincing and a salvage yard owner who is willing to go the extra mile.

Jeff, I drive a 94 E320 and the standard rear glass is tempered not laminated. Shatters into a million pieces when it breaks.
Peter... you are correct...I meant to say tempered. The 500E500 rear glass uses a dual laminate similar to the front windshield. The layer (vinyl?) in the middle keeps the glass when it fails. The 500E500 glass uses the micro fine defrosting lines as well.
