AMG brochure

Many thanks weide1, I did not know of the 3.6 KE, only about the 3.2? and the 3.4 KE, this in my mind, the most
desireable 6 cylnder motor and bost beautiful to behold.
The old school inj. 24valve 6 KE, as I said, look at it, and listen...

That is quite a interesting product brochure. 300E engine displacement was 3.2l for the W201 and 3.4l for the 300E, up to around 1992/1993. With the switch to the newer HFM injection system, those motor displacements were increased to 3.6l. Other pre-1992 AMG literature clearly shows this with the KE systems, 3.2l and 3.4l.

This brochure from France does indicate displacement of 3.6l for KE motors and the motor images are clearly KE injection. I find it unusual that France would be the only country to have a factory AMG 3.6l M104 KE. The 1990 German factory AMG press package clearly indicates displacement at 3.4l. 1992 German AMG lit shows M104 HFM 3.6l, plus introduction of new AMG logo (///AMG).

I have no reference material for model year 1991, but I suspect its going to be the same as 1990. French AMG brochure has date stamp of 9/1990, so it is direct conflict with the official AMG press release for the AMG products for model year 1990.

That would be this… but it’s interesting that they didn’t claim it until 1992… were they “testing” it in earlier markets?

It might be as simple as this… a September ‘90 brochure in France would be for model year ‘91 in Europe, which would be model year ‘92 in the USA (the language of AMG 45)… that’s all I can think of.

The 1992 model year brochures all show HFM M104's.

Not only is that AMG lit from France peculiar, I have never heard of, nor seen any of these 3.6l KE M104's, either for sale, discussed in other forums, posted on Facebook or even for sale in Japan. The AMG wiki has no mention of it nor any other reference source I have read.

It would be very odd if this was available globally just in model year 1991 and its the first we are hearing about it. It would have been discussed previously or we would have seen production vehicles with the 3.6l KE M104

Without additional supporting evidence, I am not convinced that the information in that brochure is correct, but if it was a simple typo (3.6l instead of 3.4l) then I would expect the HP to be 200kW (3.4l rated power) and not 215kW. For reference, the 3.6l M104 HFM as used in the C36 is rated at 200 kW (94-96) and for model year 1997, 206 kW and the M104 3.6l HFM used in the E36, it rated at 192 kw (1992). My memory is a bit hazy on the differences between the KE and HFM, but from what I recall, the HFM was more efficient and was supposed to yield a higher HP output, but the advertised numbers I posted don't follow that logic.
