Anyone else having trouble scheduling service at the dealer?

After replacing the steering box and linkages on our E420, I wanted to get an alignment at the dealer. In the past this was a simple task, contact the dealer, make an appointment, maybe 1-2 weeks out. I never imagined the "contact the dealer" portion could be so difficult. I neglected to write down the exact dates so the timeframes are estimated, but you get the idea.

Around July-19 or so, I used the dealer's "Contact Us" web form (link), assuming I'd get a reply within a few days. I wanted to know how soon I could get the alignment done. The online schedule tool was showing the next available dates 4+ weeks out, and of course, that must have been wrong. :p

About 2 weeks later (say, August 4?), after no response, I tried calling. All phone numbers go to the receptionist, there's no direct number to the service department - I asked her, she said nope. Phone rings a few times and goes to voicemail. I leave a detailed message with email and phone number.

Another week goes with no response. I figure I'll try the online appointment scheduler (link), so on August-9, I schedule an appointment for September 9. In the comment field I added a note, "I would like to have the alignment done before the end of August if possible, PLEASE let me know if I can get in earlier. My messages from a month ago, and voicemail from a week ago, have both remained unanswered."

NO RESPONSE.

At this point I don't even know if my appointment has been acknowledged by the dealer. They are 25 miles and 30-40 minutes away, inconvenient to just drop by. But I also don't want to show up with 2 cars on Sept-9 (dropping the car off for the day; my wife has to follow me there and drive me home) and have them tell me I'm not in the computer. So I drive down a week later, I think around August-17. Yup, my appointment is in their system, all set for Sept-9. Great, but why the communication vacuum? Well, they are overworked and understaffed, can't get people to work there, techs are quitting, there's some virus going around, and many other sad sad stories accompanied by the world's smallest violin. I know it's not the fault [probably] of the guy behind the counter so I don't chew him out but he knows I'm not happy either.

Funnily enough, they start sending me reminder emails 2 weeks prior, and I get a total of 4-5 reminders. But wait, it gets better! A week before the appointment, on September-2, they call and tell me another tech has quit and they need to re-schedule me. I'm not happy and ask how much of a delay, like a week? No, mid-October. I about lost it. Again, I know the lady on the phone isn't at fault and try not to take it out on her. I explain I'm not getting a L/O/F (lube/oil/filter) that can be easily delayed another month. The car needs an alignment after parts being replaced and can't be driven, and I've been trying to get in SINCE JULY. I got the impression she was calling everyone and re-scheduling anyone who didn't fuss too much. I managed to keep the Sept-9 date.

September-9 rolls around, drop the car off, mention to the service writer about the communication problem and he starts in with the tales of woe. I wish I could remember details but basically they get 50-100 voicemails a day and golly, they simply can't respond to 'em, dagnabbit! Ditto for emails. I assume they check VM/emails for anyone threatening legal action and delete the rest. So basically the only way to get any interaction is driving there in person, and talking to another person face to face.

The alignment went without incident, that'll be $200 please (up from $180, previously $150, and as low as $100 only 15 years ago).

Right now, the online scheduler is showing the next available appointment TWELVE WEEKS OUT, on Dec-6. Unreal.

Bonus: When I arrived, the paperwork showed me scheduled for L/O/F. I had to tell them I was there for an alignment, please don't change my Red Line oil and downgrade me to Mobil. The comment about the alignment was in every reminder email they sent me (screenshot below)... and I never received a single phone call, voice message, or email, ever. Well, until the work was done and they wanted money!

Can't they just let you use their equipment Dave? You probably know more about w124s than the entire stealership combined

But yes your experience there appears to suck big time!

It sounds to me like you need to move to a locale with more MB dealers (like Houston, which has 5-6 in the metro area), or find a trusted independent shop that has a Hunter machine, knows how to do alignments for older Benzes, and will charge you less than the dealership.

I am seriously considering trying to locate somewhere else in town that is capable of properly aligning W124's. In the past I only grumbled about the high cost (back at $150!) at the dealer. But the current environment of "make an appointment online for 6-12 weeks out and cross your fingers!" is ludicrous.

:runexe:

So what makes a dealer alignment so special. Is it that spreader bar thing? My dealer service advisor said MB has their own alignment machines. Is that true?

Thankfully I have a local indy shop which uses the spreader bar alignment and has done well with both of my cars. My dealer flat out refused to do the alignment on my 240D a few years ago if they weren't the ones who installed the parts as well.

Just curious, Dave, does your dealer impose a vaccine mandate for its employees? We haven't seen anything yet when it comes to a shortage of employees. Some of us are prepared to walk from our careers over these unconstitutional mandates.

It's partly having the spreader bar, AND also knowing they need to use it. Shops that don't know MB's would roll their eyes and say "oh, you don't need that!". The MB machines are not MB-branded but could possibly have some unique features from the mfr (Hunter?), but I'm not certain. Years ago, the MB machines had metal pins that slid through small holes near the lug bolts, to touch the wheel hub and eliminate errors based on wheel imperfections. The latest machine I saw a few years ago clamped mirrors to the wheels and used lasers or something.

No idea about the vaccine mandate, but the dealer was recently acquired by Gee Automotive Group (link) and may be subject to whatever the conglomerate decides. There is no mask mandate at the dealer, no employees I saw wore masks. My suspicion about the employee shortage is due to overwork and underpay, but I'm really not sure.

:archer:

A grocery store chain in Arizona requires masks for all employees who are not vaccinated, so it's not as easy as it used to be to figure out where people stand based solely on mask usage. I would bet money that most customers in that grocery store wearing a mask have also had the shot(s) (what irony), and will be the first in line to get the booster. IMHO, the employee shortages we've seen up to now are nothing compared to what's coming.

With all the begging and cash incentives, my employer has only managed to get 39.5% of its pilots vaccinated. They've got a real problem that they should have seen coming 18 months ago.

Sounds like it is time for an employer mandate!

Oh dear. What a fustercluck. I'm sorry to hear something as straightforward as an alignment is so difficult to obtain. I agree with @gerryvz --- perhaps you can find an independent shop and establish a relationship with them.

I called my independent shop last week (who bought a spreader bar and uses it for alignments now, after I asked them to do it several years ago) and asked them to help me check wheel trueness and install new tires. They are about 1.5 weeks out, so I will go in at the end of the week for that little bit of work.

They are a smaller shop (7 lifts) and I became friends with the owner about 9 years ago ----- I quickly learned that we have children about the same age, he lives a few streets over from me, we have a similar outlook on a lot of stuff, etc. Since the shop is small and the owner and I get along well, I enjoy lots of little benefits that I am sure I would not be able to enjoy were I to patronize the dealer or a larger facility

Such benefits I get to enjoy are:
- Bring My Own Parts
- I get access to his parts sources for same-day parts sourcing if I am doing something at home a foul it up royally and need parts pronto and cannot wait for FCP/AHAZ/etc.
- I can just email / phone the owner any day of the week and ask about scheduling
- Sometimes use his lifts if he's not busy....

Over the years I try to refer as many people as I know his way (including several on this forum), and I am known to bring beers on a Friday afternoon or pastries on a weekday morning for the crew.

Anyways, my point is that perhaps a relationship with a smaller shop may yield some benefits. Good luck. It is harder and harder to find small-town-service as our world becomes more and more big-city-focused.

I'll share my very recent experience, but in Ukraine. I recently took a vehicle to a local Toyota dealer in Kyiv for suspension look over. I've scheduled and rescheduled the appointment 3 times (change of plans) via Viber, which is the most popular messaging app here. Under "contact us" on the dealer's webpage there are phone numbers, email, and a Viber link. Tap-tap, and you're chatting with a real person. Response time is few minutes at most. It couldn't be easier.

Each time the appointment was 2-3 days out. Service department works until 8 pm Mon-Sat. There are cameras over each stall and you get to watch the tech working on your car via a TV screen in the lounge. Or you can be escorted into the work area and watch the work from up close and chat with tech, if you wish so. The only limitation is that you can't randomly stroll under the car without tech's permission 😁. If you have an anonymous-looking container, you can sip sparkling wine and nobody will bat an eye, even if they know.

Total cost for half an hour inspection is about $17. Labor time on the required repairs was quoted at about 10-12 hours for about $500 total. Alignment is about $32. An MB dealer will be more expensive, but not terribly

I contacted my local Benz dealer service department shortly after getting my 036 (~4 years ago) to have a few little things looked at and was told by whoever answered the phone that they "don't really work on older cars".....😂....
