Hi all,

Wanted to post an intro to the group and say hello. Long time lurker and have wanted a W124 500E for many years. I'm a Porsche guy and am lucky to have a few of those including a 987.2 Cayman that I race in Porsche Club Racing in Stock G class.

I bought the 1992 500E at Gooding & Co at Amelia Island a few weeks ago.
https://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1992-mercedes-benz-500-e/

It felt like the right car with the right provenance and so I decided to pay-up for something that I thought was investment grade. The car came north about 10 days ago via InterCity who were great and I had it taken to Mercedes Benz Greenwich where there is a fantastic Tech named Dave LaTulippe. The car is beautiful and is in remarkable shape. Every trim piece, decal and fixture remains in as-new condition including bottom-side which doesn't even have rust on the exhaust bolts. I'm happy to post more pics once the car is done with some of the mild work that Dave is doing, specifically:
- rotors, caps and plugs
- fluids
- disassemble and grease wiper gears
- sending head unit to Becker USA for the BT mod

There is some seepage at the rear main seal and one side of the diff which we're just going to clean-up and monitor for the time being. The car has never been apart so would prefer not to take it apart if we don't need to. Maybe that will be a winter project. Beyond that the car has a goofy painted "500E by Porsche" logo which is luckily on top of the clear coat and which presumably was done in 1992 along with the painted stripe which is nice and will remain. I think a wet sand will get it sorted so I'll have Detailer's Domain in Norwood, NJ take car of that.

Car was built 1/21/92, has 31,100 miles or so, had just one owner, has all paperwork from day one including window sticker, no paintwork. I've never driven one so looking forward to doing so once Dave finishes his work. Thanks to all here for an awesome and helpful forum. Look forward to meeting some of you in person.

Wow. Who woulda thunk that the stuff on the doors was painted on? I think everyone was convinced they were stickers.

Best of luck with your light refurb efforts.

Congratulations! I think you will find these cars drive like a heavier Porsche. Did you know this car was going to be at Amelia? Looking forward to pictures and driving impressions.

Congrats!!

Welcome to our forum. Looks like a great car as well it should be. We will look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

With 31K miles on the clock I hope that you put a few miles on it and don't just park it. I know for the $$$$ you spent you will have to preserve it for a future sale. To me this is a problem w/ buying such a low miles car (resistance to putting miles on it).

With 142K miles on my car (54K miles by me and 15 yrs of ownership) I don't have that problem and I really enjoy driving it more than looking at it.
I do my best to keep it up and someday when and if I decide to sell it I will let the chips fall where they may.

Good Luck w/ your new ride.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Yes I'll definitely be using the car, it won't be disappearing into some collection never to be seen again. My 2011 GT3RS (bought new) has 24k and probably 80 track days on it so while I'll admit to being precious about cars, I do like to use them as intended. The 500E will be "part of the estate sale" so while the anticipation is to keep it in tip-top shape, I'll but putting miles on it as a GT. Can't take it with you, right?
