• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

We hope you will become an active contributor to the community!

    Sincerely,
    500Eboard Management

"On this, the successful 31:04 run Roy claims 2,794 mapped miles and 2800 road miles - which he covered at an average speed of 90.1 mph. The run took place over Columbus Day weekend so as to meet minimal traffic, in part for safety; they also avoided any type of reckless driving such as tailgating, although they reached top speeds of 160 mph. Roy's route, which hit only four toll booths, three or four red lights, and only one close call with the highway patrol in Oklahoma, ended at the Santa Monica Pier."

Hmm...with LOTS of luck and increasing the average speed to just 94 MPH, you could make the trip in under 30 hours. :-)

Someone needs to do it in a W124! Preferably an .036 of course.

Seems to me that need2speed would be JUST the right dude to do it.

Interestingly, my good friend and fellow MB collector in Germany, Thomas Grevel, did the European Cannonball back in the day, using a brand-new (rented) W126 500SE sedan. He almost won, too.

Here's the information on his early 1980s Cannonball experience on his club web site (his club, Oldtimerfreunde Freising, is the club that puts on the annual 3-day Alpentours that I attend and drive the Alps in during my annual Eurotours).

In German:

And translated into English via Google:

Here's a photo ... caption "das war unsere Top Speed" (this was our top speed)
