@gsxr, can you provide details as to which models this reader will cover, and also which data (i.e. live data?) it will display?

Can this unit take the place of an HHT or HHT-WIN on a Star C3/C4 system?

Also, how does it connect to the car (38-pin connector?).

It connects via 38-pin either directly, or via the breakout box. I think it will work on most 1990's Mercedes. The attached PDF claims the following:

"Mercedes-Benz digital information includes: 1991-99 engine diagnostics, 1991-97 diagnostic module, 1990-99 five speed automatic transmission, 1993-99 airbag. Analog information includes (get ready for the acronyms): ELR/EDS/CIS-E, DM, BM, DI, ETC, 4MATIC, EA/CC/ISC, ADS, ASD, ABS, ASR, SPS, RB, CST, RST, IRCL, PSE, ATA, CF, A/C and SRS. If you’re a Benz specialist, you doubtless already know what all these acronyms mean, and there’s no point in spelling them out for you here. For the rest of us, Baum has included an instruction manual that translates these and many other obscure European vehicle system acronyms."

I dug into my emails and found these notes from 2010... egads, nearly 2 decades ago:

"I can only test it on my W124 V8's with LH injection, so I can't comment on what it does with other injection systems. But with LH, it will communicate with all systems to read & clear codes. It supports digital communication with all modules capable of it (way faster than blink codes). You get live data (aka "actual values" or "data stream") from the LH, E-GAS, BM, and DM modules. For DI (EZL) and ABS/ASR, it would only read/clear codes (no live data).
The live data from LH and E-GAS is extremely helpful for diagnosing engine problems, and since the E-GAS has multiple codes for each analog code (click here - note there are six different digital codes which all appear as blink code "2"). The digital codes from E-GAS are much more useful than via a blink-code reader.
The kit includes a breakout box for the 38-pin port, so you can more easily use a handheld blink code reader when necessary for certain things... you still need the blinker box to check analog SRS codes (W124), and to re-set the LH module adaptation back to mean values. Pretty much everything else can be done via the scanner."

HHT-Win does have more functionality (specifically, live data from EZL and ASR) but the Baum does quite a bit otherwise.

Back then, Baum was selling refurb'd units for $600 + tax + S&H, which after adjusting for inflation, is like €5k in today's money.
