Yep, I was lucky to find a NOS one for my refirb this past summer. I paid a lot less than $105 though -- I paid the last factory price (discounted) before the part went NLA.

This reservoir is not necessary or required for the car, and is a prime example of the un-needed over-engineering that MB did.

To replace this reservoir, I believe the harmonic balancer needs to come off of the front of the engine, which means that pretty much the entire front of the engine needs to come apart to get to it. I would say that replacing this reservoir is only really feasible if the front crankshaft seal (hub removal) is being replaced. So, you may be sitting on this for many years JAB, and likely will never even use it.

Yes agree with everything Gerry said above. I have 2 or 3 of these good used sitting spare. They were omitted from later engines and really not actually needed. Only a true 036 anorak would notice it missing on an early build.

Also - if you do replace it may as well do the front crank seal, waterpump etc and a full engine tear down "whilst in there". Those 3 words that strike fear into your bank account.

In a decade or two when mint 036's are selling for $0.4M, items like this will be worth the proverbial €5k, needed for that 100-pt restoration...

That's what I'm waiting on Dave with my 3x rocking horse poo spares

I agree. I'll be long dead by then, and will have enjoyed my .036 fully. So I'll let the next owner of my car deal with replacing it again, if needed.

This part just added €5K to the very distant future projected resale value of my car then. It will go as an accesory in the still growing parts stash I am amassing for any potential future needs.

Thanks all for the comments, still so much to learn.

I think the Rev Parts websites haven't caught up with the NLA status yet. It seems to take up to a year, particularly for low-demand parts where nobody is placing an order, so they haven't figured it out yet. AFAICT, the NLA status appears to be a manual update in the RevPart systems.

I don’t know how many times I have to repeat this.

DO NOT USE REV PARTS SITES TO CHECK AVAILABILITY OF PARTS.

DO NOT USE REV PARTS SITES AS PARTS CATALOG OR DIAGRAMS FOR MB PARTS.

ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY ONLY USE REV PARTS SITES AS DISCOUNT FRONT ENDS FOR ORDERING MB FACTORY PARTS.

USE EPC / ISPPI ONLY As parts catalogs.

USE MB CLASSIC PARTS SITE ONLY to check official availability of parts from MB.

I bought that reservoir from Japan and included it in a shipment of other items I bought. Not allocating any shipping costs to the reservoir, I was into that part for $78. My net after FedEx shipping to JAB is $88. I bought and sold that part to provide a service on a NLA part to the Board members, not to make any money!

There is no such thing as an unfair price. The price for any given item at any given point in time is what the buyer and seller are willing to agree upon. If I had that weep reservoir, I’d have charged JAB $250 for it !!

I just happened to find a vendor last June who probably didn’t realize that it was NLA and let it go for about what a REVPARTS site would have sold it for.

My understanding, is that when a part that is shown as available in RevPart system is ordered and is actually NLA, the system gets updated. I think I recall ordering something that turned out to be NLA, and checking not too long after, the system was updated with NLA status.

I was just wondering if, relying on the above logic from a personal experience, this part might have been re-supplied again - that's all. I knew my post would get a clarifying response. I appreciate and share your mentality of "providing a service on xxxx to the Board members" when possible. I just purchased headlight wipers from a member for close to $100 after shipping and fees and would not re-sell for any less, but not for any more either to another board member, had my plans would change

I think you are correct, and that's my understanding too. However, this requires (1) someone to place an order, and (2) the dealer receiving the order has to inform RevParts to update their database to NLA status. If both those criteria aren't met, the part likely still shows available.

If available again, MBCC Germany will normally show "available". Right now, that p/n shows no search results, which typically is what happens when inventory is zero but before the NLA status is fully processed. (Exception is newer parts, i.e. W211/W212, which may not show in MBCC at all.)

I call a bravado. You'd ask $100 and then would spend 30 minutes in line at the post office to ship it 😁
Most all of my domestic parts are shipped via the USPS Self-Service Kiosk. Except very large boxes, such as the fan shroud that I recent shipped off (which hopefully arrived).

All international shipments require a customs form, unless it is a letter/paper package like data cards. That means automatic waiting in line for all international shipments. So this is definitely 10-30 minutes waiting in line. Usually 4-5 times per month, yes.

Have you tried USPS Click & Ship, for online postage, both domestic & international? Then you only have to go to the post office if the package won't fit in your mailbox.
