Interested in getting a 190E 2.3-16.

Anybody know if they came with ASR or limited slip?
As Cory said - LSD yes, ASR no. And, it's a decent possibility the LSD clutches are worn after 20+ years ($$$$ to replace). The picture of the odometer looks suspicious to me, make sure to get the VIN and run CarFax / AutoCheck.

I thought you were looking for a cheap (like, <$3k) winter beater? I'd rather get a 94-95 E420 with ASR and heated seats for a winter driver. ASR is 100x better than LSD in winter, IMO...

Q, was not there an ASD option W201 series? Love thouse Babies;) Roger
In Europe, yes, I believe ASD was an option on at least some variants (.034/.035/.036). I don't believe ASD was an option on USA-spec cars but I'm not positive. Jeff (captruff) is the resident USA 16v expert, I'm sure he knows.

All 035/036 had always asd, the early 034s had all lsd and asd was fitted like something around 86 as standard. Keep in mind with asd you have always a normal clutch type lsd with a 30% locking ratio. Most of lsd with or without asd are pretty much worn nowadays. So the locking ratio will be close to 0 if there is no asd to lock it up

Sooooo, ask ourselfs, why did this not happen to the 124--034 and esp. 036?

ASR was considered "advanced" ASD... so the E500E got the "better" system. ASR acts as electronic limited-slip, without a clutch pack to wear out. Read all about it here:

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/other/ASD-ASR-4MATIC-ADS.pdf

The early (W124, not W210) 4Matic also used ASD on the rear diffs... same clutch-pack internals with hydraulic locking. The "100%" lock function ONLY works if the clutch pack friction discs are good. I had a car with ASD and worn clutch pack, and it would spin one tire even with ASD engaged, due to the clutch wear. It's a good system but requires periodic clutch pack replacement.

Thin picking up here for fun winter beaters Dave! Looked at a E30 325ix yesterday , 195k miles, some rust including a hole in the drivers floor and other issues, offered him $2500 but he wants >$3000 so no deal.

Then this 16v popped up close by, so I had a look today. Interesting old coot owns it. Your right about the speedo Dave, it's broken. No Rust though! Been sitting for years but I got to drive it, hade a low rev stumble but when you got past it, it zipped right up to the redline nice and smooth. Puts the 4 cylinder in my Miata to shame in smoothness and willingness to rev! Whole car needs to be gone through to make it roadworthy, interior is rough but the old man won't budge on his $6750. At $5k, I could run it through the winter and slowly sort through its issues.

So, search for fun winter car continues.....

And we all know of the shortcomings of the ASR, better although in the W210 f.ex. with the ASR/OFF before introduktion of the ESP w OFF, also.
A combination of ASR with swichable ASD I would prefere, working on that I am. Roger

There are no significant shortcomings of ASR on the W124 except the ability to switch if off; and if switched off there is no mechanical limited-slip. The fix is adding ASR defeat with Quaife/WaveTrac limited-slip for track use, or those of you who really believe you are smarter than the computers in street use.

Actually a proper limited slop diff as it comes in the asd car is perfect for a performance car. The asr system is more advanced since it can reduce engine power if needed. Asd is nice since it will lock up to 100% if engaged and still full engine power available. That's why a W124.036 with a lsd and asr off function makes so much fun
