I've been a beneficiary of lots of great advice from this forum that has helped me maintain my 1994 E500. In particular, I really benefit from knowing what's likely to break next based on the accumulated feedback referenced in this forum. This aspect saved me from the dreaded ignition lockout by having the right parts arrive and constructed a tool the same day the switch started to lock up. Dodged a bullet thanks to this forum. Too many other instances to list where how-to entries and photos have guided me through repairs. Thanks guys!
I obtained my car with around 27K miles in 2008 and have been primarily self-maintaining. I've come to realize that after 16 years and and additional 120K miles I have now transitioned from the "repair my car" stage to the "restore my car" stage given the accelerating decline in parts availability. I now drive with the inherent fear that a fender bender could cause the insurance company to declare my car totaled. To reduce probabilities, and despite being in the Boston area, my car has never experienced snow.
This week's projects are replace the serpentine belt and start tracking down and repair the power steering fluid leak that's getting worse.
Thanks again,
C
