I am looking to get get my intake manifold powder coated. Has anyone had a super experience in SOCAL with a powder coating service.

When powder coating became fashionable, little shops sprouted up everywhere, some good, some not so good.

Thank you very much, appreciate it.
You probably don't need me to tell you how cool your car would look with a red intake manifold and valve covers. Intake is hidden, but sometimes the OCD gets the best of us.

Heh-Heh. Thanks. That would be really cool. Powdercoating the valve covers would be one of those "slippery slope" projects for me ---- I would end up tearing apart the entire engine / engine bay and clean/polish everything, then decide, hell, might as well tear everything else off the car, put it on a rotisserie, do a complete repaint, etc etc etc .... I'll avoid that to stay solvent. :-)

Smart move... :5150:

FWIW, be careful powder-coating magnesium valve-covers. If not properly done (pre-treat with a DOW 7, 9, or equivalent coating, low baking temps, etc.) the magnesium is always out-gassing, which will cause the coating to bubble over time. Also, I would never powdercoat the interior of the valvecover, as you don't coating material to ever flake off and be mixed in your oil, possibly clogging an orifice . . .

I feel your pain on that one. I did a subframe off restoration of a 1968 Camaro and after seeing how nice the powder coating looked on a couple items I ended up spending the GDP of a small nation on dozens of other pieces including the subframe. :spend:

I'm still trying to figure out why you want to get your intake manifold powder coated, when it has no performance benefit, nor does it have any visual/aesthetic benefit because you can't see the friggin' thing. How often is the airbox off the car?

It makes MUCH more sense to powder-coat the valve covers. If powder coating the intake made sense, don't you think that the tuners (Brabus, AMG, Carlsson, Vath, etc.) would have done it on every car they tuned? I trust you read my previous post on the other thread about it. I've half a mind to combine the two threads, because they are essentially the same question.

Maybe its a bad time to mention that I powder coated my anti-roll bars and springs, which I almost never look at and can barely see. :pc1:

That is very sound advice.
I just started looking up powder coating on the web and saw some intake manifolds.

But after gathering info just from this thread makes me realize it would be a mistake to powder coat the intake manifold.

Only valve covers will be powder coated. And even then, I am considering just painting them.

I don't think that painting the valve covers will be as good as powder coating them, in terms of durability. The powder coated I've used has realized up front that the M104 and M119 cave covers I have had are magnesium and have adjusted their process & materials accordingly. Thus, never had any problems with the results.
