I had my shop reupholstered sportline steering wheel with GENIUNE PERIOD CORRECT Australian leather. (NOT those cheap reupholstery jobs with nappa leather).

So it is period correct E500E factory steering wheel with a brand new period correct geniune leather.

Absolutely perfect, been done to factory or better standards.

Wow - that's the best and period correct reupholster job I've ever seen!:wow:
Exact & clean seams, perfect leather cuts/transitions, and correct texture. If it was a pre-facelift I would be all over it.

It is a great oppurtunity for US folks to get a new and proper wheel , I remember myself looking for reupholstery all around states.(my wheel had a Texas sun damage).

Couple of silly options I found in other states far away from me. Price was more than bnib from dealer + the final result (quality) was not guranteed to be perfect.

So for now knowing that I did couple wheels for me and for those who may want to get a new one.

I regularly refresh steering wheels in all my cars to keep them fresh and clean. It is most touchable part in a car, so must be perfect .

How easy is it to source the airbag for this? I'm thinking about it for my 94 convertible... but I'd need the airbag. Not seeing anything mint or close to it on the ebay/etc.

Should not be hard to find since it is from factory mercedes s.swheel.

The core is used but the leather is absolutely brand new. Wheel has been cleaned all around prior to be redone.

Keep in mind it is geniune and period correct leather. There are no examples like that.

Your shops work on reupholstering of these wheels is top notch indeed, looks beautiful, beautiful stitching and stretch in all the right places!
Appreciate your comments.

I know how it is hard to find a proper shop/person to make it the way it supposed to be.

So I was planning to make three wheels like that as a part of my little contribution for this community.

Roman, any chance you could get a pre-facelift st.wheeel for my 500E done on order?
Arnt, do you mean an early Sportline wheel with the "standard" shape airbag? These were phased out (replaced by the style shown above) in early 1992 production.

OK let me clarify what I meant:

I've always believed this is the pre-facelift version
390 mm sportline early style reuph.jpg

And this is the facelift version
390 mm sportline late style.jpg

I am on the hunt for a pre-facelift 390mm steering wheel as shown in the upper image.

Arnt. The wheel style change did not occur with the facelift, or any model change as one would think. As Dave said the change was made early on in 92, making the first style you are looking for rather rare. I have this wheel on both my 92 cars. I believe the early wheel was used on all the 190 16v cars.

Yup, what Drew said. This change occurred over a year before the change to facelift production. Not many 124's have the "early" Sportline wheel.

:3gears:

OK, I'm still learning as I walk.:)
That makes me think, is the early version actually 390mm and not 400mm? Has someone measured the diameter?
Is it possible to find a more accurate changeover point/month for the steering wheel upgrade in 1992?
(the delivery date on my car is 8.April 1992, VIN ...753350)

Both are definitely 390mm.

The EPC has no break point, which is very annoying. Based on photos of cars for sale, I believe the changeover was in early 1992 production. Arnt, if your car was built April 1992 and had the early wheel from the factory, then the change might have been by late April 1992, or May at the latest? I thought it was more like Feb/March but I could be mistaken.

My 500E is 08.1992 and it has newer style sportline steering wheel.

Best I can tell the change was right around the March/April/May timeframe. It's possible that there was a mixture of wheels used during this period, similar to how there was not a clean date/serial number break when the plastic oil tubes were phased into production.

So Arnt should be good with the late style steering wheel

Personally I do not like wheels with the wider bottom portion.

I just emailed and PMed @Roma_500E . Hopefully I can get this steering wheel for my car.
This would be my first time using Western Union so I would need to account for fees which I am unfamiliar with. Thanks!

Dave, my car had a Victor DB3 when I got it and the original steering wheel didn't follow, so I don't know what type it originally had.

Roma thanks for the steering wheel! The reupholstery job is great and very neat ---- and it feels clean! (Unlike my old steering wheel with years of accumulated previous owner French fry grease). The steering wheel took 7 days to get from Kazakhstan to San Francisco (incredibly) ....... I should have done this years ago!

FWIW I swapped my original wheel's horn retaining wheel over to the reupholstered wheel b/c my original pieces were in pristine condition --- but man the leather work on the reupholstered wheel is super nice. Thanks again @Roma_500E. If anyone is looking to replace their original wheel with a freshly recovered one, the wheels that @Roma_500E sells are very very nice!

The first picture shows my original wheel with the dye coming off.
