Nice 500E "Drifting" vid

Belive me Gerry ,, but an E500E is one of the best car around to drift,, BEEN THERE DONE THAT

with firm suspension and LSD ,, everything thrown out ,,it could be a serious competitor in a real drift challenge

Limited slip is required to make both rear wheels spin. You won't be drifting much with only one rear tire spinning.

The factory clutch-type limited-slip shown above will also work, but I'd recommend the Quaife. Don't bother with a used factory LSD, it will cost almost as much as a new one by the time you replace the clutch packs, etc. The Quaife has no clutches to wear out and is highly preferable for any track use, including drifting. The OE clutch LSD is good for street use.

None of the R129 500SL's had limited slip, they either had open diffs, or ASR.

The Quaife doesn't need fixing, it has a lifetime warranty. It's pretty much bulletproof especially with "only" ~320hp going through it. If you get the factory clutch-type limited slip, eventually it will need to have the clutch pack replaced, especially if heavily used (i.e., drifting). Replacing the clutch pack is expensive both in parts & labor. The Quaife will cost more up front but save you a bunch in the long run.

You have to special order the Quaife. Nobody stocks it in the USA either, it has to ship from the UK. There is a factory Mercedes limited-slip, which is in the photo you linked above, but I wouldn't recommend it for drifting...
