Have just picked up my 92 500E here in Dubai. Would this car have an oil cooler, its a Japanese import?

Vin is WDB1240361B638911

A very good question on official JDM cars . However , lots of Japanese cars are actually Euro cars imported used at some stage, which possibly yours is. (judging from the photos in your owner's thread). In which case it should have an Oil cooler.

Hopefully someone here can verify with the VIN .

Official JDM cars also have an exhaust temperature light in the instrument cluster at the bottom and all the way to the right past the SRS indicator. If your car has this light, it probably is JDM which means (as bing also said) you should have an oil cooler.

That is a real Japanese import - the order code (839) indicates Japan delivery. EPC says no oil cooler, sorry. Japan cars did not get the oil cooler, for the same reason it was deleted from USA cars. :(

However, I see your new car is 481 with 271 interior. I am seriously Blackberry with envy!!! That is one of my absolutely favorite color combinations... possibly #1 on the list.

:drool5: :apl:

Thought as much since Japan don't have loooong stretches of highways I guess . Thanks for confirming , Dave ! And yes , zooming in at one of the photos , it has exh temp light on the cluster , so real jdm . Interesting though the license plate trunk place is rectangular which made me think euro import . Then again anything is possible in Japan , modded to make it look like a proper euro car I guess [emoji12] [emoji12]

Bing, where are you seeing photos for this car...?

Datacard for WDB1240361B638911 is attached.

thanks but a bit confused, it has the exhaust temp light, but is a Japanese car, does that mean cooler or not?

Two different things. From what I know, the Japanese market required an exhaust temperature light which in non-JDM cars is just an empty space in the bottom right on the instrument cluster.

Robert

Correct: Japan-spec cars will have the exhaust temp light, and will not have an oil cooler.

The cooler and hoses are available new, but a couple of the mounting brackets are NLA and you might have to try and locate used ones from junked E500E's. If you find more than one being parted out, I'd be interested in buying a set of the mounting brackets... I wanted to install the oil cooler on my car and have no way to get the NLA brackets!

Maybe a stupid question but wouldn't it be easy enough to make a pair of custom mounting brackets? I don't know what they look like but 'mounting bracket' doesn't sound too complicated

From the EPC drawings, they appear to be moderately complicated brackets. Would be a challenge to fabricate from scratch but I'm sure it could be done!

Sorry what is the EXH light for? Mine goes red when switched on then goes off. Doesn't come on at all. My car is also from Japan. It is located at the far right, next to the ASR light.

Japanese requirement for their smog laws . IIRC there's a sensor hooked up to one of the cats measuring heat . Exactly what that means I'm not sure, but my guess is if your cats get clogged or otherwise kaput then it'll light up.

Members silverstar and 2phast might know more clearly though ?!

The exhaust temperature sensors are there to warn of the fire hazard from overheated cats. Apparently, back in the early days of cats in Japan, they were catching things on fire. An overheated cat on top of some dried brush or grass is not a good combination. They can eventually ignite the vehicle interior as well...

Which mounting brackets do you need,Dave?

I have some mounting hardware left over...

Just had a look under my bumper and no oil cooler.. This is a German import so from what I read above I thought it would? My friend here who has a 92 Japan import does have an oil cooler

Chassis number is WDB1240361B467309 gsxr can you plz check it on the system?

That is strange... EPC datacard shows country code 216 (Düsseldorf, Germany) so it should have an oil cooler. Could be a previous owner removed it?

Oh I just remembered I'm sure my engine's been swapped because oiler tubes are plastic, belt is 6 notch & tensioner is spring loaded. I understand these features were 1993+ ? I guess this is a Japanese engine then.. Well that sucks!

If I get one, are there connector ports on the engine for cooler tubes?

You would need to get the oil filter housing with ports for the cooler hoses, all the hoses, cooler mounting brackets, and the cooler itself.

You are correct, your VIN indicates an early 1991 build date, so it should have 8-rib belt with manual tensioner, and metal oil tubes. Original engine was serial # 000418. You could check what engine number you have now, most likely it is over # 006000.

Guys

i recently discovered that the oil cooler on my 600SEL is missing and but it should be there. My car is euro specification originally sold in Luksemburg. So i bought an used cooler 140 500 00 00 and installed it in place. I know from EPC that 500E shares oil cooler with 600SEL so maybe brackets for mouting it are the same too.
