Hi Everyone!
Just got a 500e 1992, 180000 km on it. Previous owner had it as a summer car and didnt use it often at all. so before i bought it it had been sitting for around two years. Looks brand new with a very good paint job (black).

So i had a good look (and deep discussion with owner about history) , filled the tank (including a bottle of

fuel s1-1 systm cleaner) and took it back home!
i new there would be some unknown faults waiting for me and here is
what i found on my way (speeding 90-150km/h :) )

i would have wanted to flush out old fluids but it did perform beautifully.

- It didnt heat up enough, thermostat was between 80-40 celsius all the way (4 hour journey) it did get closer to 80, but should be way over that. So i guess the car needs a new thermostat?

- clunking noise right back side when driving over small bumps on the road. Thinks it should be the shock absorber that needs a change?

- front right window leaks in air, should be a matter of old seals that needs refreshing with silicon lubricant?

other than that i didnt find more for now, besides that the car drinks fuel like an alcoholic :D

I would love for help from you guys about what i should do, beware of, and comments on my observations. Since i am not a car expert but will do my best from now on, being an owner of this beautiful classic.

Cheers everyone

Congratz! Sounds good. Show us some pics.
And welcome- your very first posting :D

The car sounds nice... where are you located? Hint: update your forum profile to show your country/city/whatever.

- Yes, you need a new thermostat. Use OE/dealer or OEM/Behr, search the forum for details.

- Clunk in rear could be several different things, you'll need to investigate. Most likely is a failing lower shock eyelet, which requires replacment of the SLS shock assembly ($$$) unless you are really creative.

- Air leak at door windows is probably worn-out felt channel. Tape it sealed from the outside and go for a quick test drive to see if that cures it, if so, replace the channel.

- Fuel consumption should not be that bad, 16mpg city / 20mpg highway (US) is typical... if yours is significantly worse, start checking the basics, like O2 sensor, fuel leaks, vacuum leaks, etc.

Welcome aboard!

:welcome4:

Thanks for all the kind and quick repliess, much appreciated!!!
Well i havent had the chance to take pictures of my own yet cuz its in the workshop now,i'll upload old owner pics on my profile now.

I actually live in Stockholm Sweden, but it seems like you guys from the US knows how top properly take care of these cars. Thats why i wanted to join this forum :-)

Thanks Gsxr for your remarks. I will look further into the o2 sensor thingy...

i ordered a bunch of new filters so i'll start by changing fluids, oils, spark plugs etc.
I'll keep you posted!

Nice looking car , congrats! Obviously been facelifted and some mods like the rear box and aftermarket lamps. Oh and nice rims , what make ?

thanks:) youre right about the mods. Rims are 19 inch carlsson 265 rear 235 front. Been thinking to get some regular wheels for simple cruising though.

Hi everyone

So i have done a big service on the car now, replacing thermostat, filters and liquids. Car running smooth! I mentioned in my first post that i was hearing a clunking noise in the right rear end, turned out to be the battery that was jumping when driving over bumps! obviously its not the proper OE car for the battery, seems to be a smaller battery than the one needed for the 500e. So i am going to change that right away, since the car died just after sitting a week in the shop and needing jump starting.

My question is: Before changing the battery, are there some procedures to be done so that the alarm doesnt mess around when inserting a new battery? Is it simply in and out? should the doors be unlocked?

thanks in advance

Should just be "in and out" to replace the battery. Obviously when you disconnect the terminals it will remove power from everything. Replace and go.

Thanks for the quick answer on the battery Gerry.

Maybe the other thread was too old so i'll post my question here again.

I've been reading about owners transmission shifting problems and i have a question of my own. Recently changed engine oil and transmission fluid. when im cruising in very low speeds around 50-60km/h the car stays in 4th gear. It doesnt want to down shift when i hit the gas (at least half way) to accelerate. The car doesnt bother using 3rd gear very much...maybe this is normal "eco friendly driving"? or is it the vacuum connection to the transmission that should be inspected/replaced?

do'h ! I was reading as 50-60mph . shocking !

anyway as below experts it's E and S thingie variant.

If you have the E/S switch set to E, this may be normal behavior. Try setting it to "S" instead.

If there is no change, and/or you already have it in "S" position, the Bowden cable may need adjustment (see factory manual). There is a remote possibility this could be vacuum related but based on what you describe, I really really doubt it.

:detective:

It is set to E mode. I will try it in S mode and see the difference, im pretty confident you are right about it being a normal behavoiur since many say this transmission is pretty "slow" in response. Thanks for your reply and info about the bowden cable i hopefully wont need to touch that.

The diffrent between "S" and "e" is what you are experiencing Amerostyle.

In "e" it Will requier more throttle for it to downshift.
