Parts prices

Just stopped by my MB mechanic here in Portland (visiting for a few days) and had a chat with the parts manager there. He expressed extreme alarm about the dramatic rise in MB parts prices. I asked him to give me an example, and he mentioned following:

Price for a motor mount for a W123 300D (basically just a hunk of rubber) was until recently $35 apiece. The most recent parts price increase (June 2009) bumped that price from the $35 up to $90 apiece. I'm scared to think what the price of our E500E motor mounts has gone up to......

I've noticed that certain items have gone up quite a bit over the past year (sometimes, a minor increase every few months adding up to a big overall increase). Interestingly, some parts have been the same price for years. For example, the limited-slip differential, it's still $880 wholesale at the moment... this is actually a price *decrease* from 18 months ago. And four years ago, the LSD was $1890 list, $1520 wholesale! The price probably dropped due to low demand and excess inventory.
