I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is actually true. The interesting point worth of contemplation is that supervisors/owners are "regular" people - not representatives from extreme portions of the tail distribution. Therefore, this is cultural

Multiple people corroborating leads me to believe it's true. What would they stand to gain?

I'm personally fed up with company/corporate bullying of people struggling to eke out a living. Or anyone else for that matter.
