Roll-over valve went kaput

Thank you, Gerry, for the info about the oil capacity.

I got another $$$ problem, my car needs a new roll-over valve.

I found it out when I was filling the gas tank this afternoon, a stream of gas came off the tank. I stopped by the local MB dealer and talked to the shop foreman who told me what was wrong with the tank.

It is labor intensive, about 10 hours, plus the price of the valve.

Regards,

Orazio

What is a roll-over valve? Never heard of it. Can you explain location, function, etc,.? :scratchchin:

Thanks
Gerry

As I understood it, cars have an additional roll over valve, that will shut off the fuel pump in case the car rolls over.

Also, the rollover valve / liquid check valve prevents liquid gas from exiting the gas tank evaporation canister.

Gerry,

This is what really happened.

Chaps,

Yesterday, after filling up my car's gas tank, it was half full, I removed the nozzle and gasoline started coming out the filler neck. I put the cap back, started the engine, let it run for a few seconds and turned it off.

I opened the gas cap and a stream of fuel came out. I immediately closed it and went to the local MB dealer. The shop foreman told me it was the roll-over pump or valve that will shut off the fuel pump in case the car rolls over.

The gas tank has to be emptied and the pump/valve replaced which is labor intensive - about 10 hours.

Today, I checked the EPC fuel system section and the only valve I found is a VENT VALVE [parts 2014760132 and 1244760432].

Anyone had this problem before?

Please advise.

Kind regards,

Orazio

An answer from Mercedesshop.com:

It's just a one way check valve. very simple job actually. Book says 10 hours, so that's what he told you. Truth is, it can bbe done in a few short hours, by any half decent mechanic who knows how to drop a tank and owns a screw driver.... Try some other shops and see who will do it for less labor time. Dealership will try to screw you every chance they get.

Orazio, you might want to check with Rick Ellinger at RC-Imports (301-762-4205) to see how much he would charge.

RC Imports has a good reputation but is out of the way for me. Silver Star in Vienna made several big mistakes with my cars to the point that I have lost my trust in them, never again.

The shop foreman at MB of Tysons now thinks - without seeing the car - that it is the vent valve and, if it not, it is the canister purge valve or maybe both.

The vent valve - 124-476-04-32 - costs $24.50 less 15% discount.

Since my car runs flawlessly I'll fill up the gas tank again and see if the problem remains.

Orazio

Have you been happy with the work done at MB of Tyson's? I buy parts there, but have never had work done. I will be needing an alignment in the not too distand future, and am looking for a shop that can do a good job.

I usually align my own cars, but this is one that I want done at a shop.

I have never taken the 500E to MB of Tysons [MBoT] but took my previous cars - S600C, C36, CLS55, 190E, etc. - for service and repair, mostly when they were under factory warranty. I was always very satisfied with their work.

A few months ago I became acquainted with a guy who is a master mechanic at a major rental car company and we became friends. So now I have been fixing my car with his help unless it is something too complicated for which we would not have all the necessary parts.

I would recommend you go to the Collision Center - MBoT body shop - rather than going to the dealer's shop. Ask for Rob Kelly, the shop manager, who is also a good friend of mine. Tell him that I sent you.

I had my 500E aligned there when they installed my new EVO wheels, they did other alignments for my cars too and I was very satisfied. I have seen wrecked Aston Martins, Ferraris and other premium cars restored to showroom condition.

Tysons Corner Collision Center 8550 Tyco Road Vienna, VA 22182 - one block off MBoT. Hours: Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Robert Kelly, manager.

Regards,

Orazio
