Great looking car...I bet a Jerry Seinfield type of guy would pay that for it.

It's screaming for Euro headlamps tho.

For the front bumper alignment at the driver's headlight, that might just be a poorly aligned headlight and trim panel below it. For the side view of the wavy lower trim, I wonder if the pics were taken with a polarizer which would exaggerate that effect. Maybe with the naked eye it would look fine.

FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

Offered for sale is one of the finest 500Es in existence. It has 62,000 miles on it, but could easily pass for a 20,000 mile car. It spent its entire life as a special occasion car and was thus never driven in bad weather and was always stored in a climate controlled environment. The paint is original and excellent (no crazing), as is the leather and the wood. All the black chrome around the windows is perfect - no water spots or fading to bronze. Glass is perfect with zero de-lamination. All electrics work perfectly including the heated seats, sunroof, rear sunshade, etc. Instrument cluster kilometers and needles are still orange and not sun-faded and it still smells new. It has never been through a car wash in its life - it has only been hand-washed, about 3 times per year and the High Sheen Evo II wheels were regularly cleaned in between washes including the insides of the wheels so no brake dust was ever allowed to sit on them. Original wheels included (no tires). Tires on the EVO IIs are Michelin Pilot Super Sports. It further has an exquisite exhaust (Borla Muffler) which has a perfect tone without droning inside the cabin (cats are intact and still on the car). The grille crate was removed and plasti-dipped black to make it pop against the chrome grille bars. A correct European warning triangle is fitted to the underside of the trunk lid.

The car was originally owned by the president of Manhattan Mercedes-Benz, then passed to a collector where it was part of a 9 car fleet and then to another collector where it was part of a 15 car fleet before finally coming into my possession in 2011 with 47,000 miles on it. It has never been used for transportation in its life.

It has an audiophile-grade $20,000 sound system installed, using all factory locations with no modification to dash, etc. and I have the original radio. The head unit is a SONY XES Z50 which is extremely rare - SONY made 250 of them for the world at a price of $8,900 each and lost money on every one. Front speakers consist of a German Maestro three way component set with individually wired tweeters and mids in the dash and woofers in the doors. Rear speakers are a German Maestro two way component set with individually wired tweeters and mids in the rear deck. The two component sets run off a 400/4 JL digital amp and there is a JL 12W7 subwoofer in the trunk running off a McIntosh 500W monoblock amp.

I owned a shop during most of the time I owned this car and performed preventative maintenance with an unlimited budget. Both upper and lower wiring harnesses were replaced, the full ignition system, all suspension rubber, front struts, motor mounts, steering links, shifter bushings, coolant hoses…etc - I even had the faded factory red paint matched by a body shop and re-dabbed the suspension nuts and hose clamps as they were done at the factory. Ignition wires lay perfectly in the rollercoasters, etc. Pads and rotors have less than 5,000 miles on them. I even changed out all the front facing lenses which were still in very good condition, but they yellowed slightly over time. The car needs absolutely nothing mechanically - can be driven cross-country today.

The only thing I could criticize would be a couple minor scratches on bumpers, one or two tiny scratches on the body and a 1/4" mark on one spoke of one of the EVO II wheels - outside of that, the car is perfect. Price is $49,500.

Sir, you need undercarriage pics to validate the claims hereto...

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

Really nice car. A couple of questions:

(1) Has the the rear bumper above the exhaust been crimped by the metal plate or has it softened due to the heat from the pipes? Maybe it is a figment of the photograph.
(2) On the airbox on top of the engine, did the words Mercedes Benz originally have paint on them which has now been removed?

There was a heat shield added below the rear bumper to protect it and the fitment is tight, but the bumper itself is pristine underneath. Zero rattles. Yes - the Mercedes-Benz lettering was originally silver as all these airboxes were and was removed when it started looking less than perfect. Also the air intake tubes were upgraded to the cleaner (in my opinion) 1994 style with the foam insulation only on the straight parts and hard plastic where it bends because the original 1992 style tubes always have a crease in the foam where they bend. I can get the car up on a lift this coming week and post underside pictures.

FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

Not all airboxes produced had silver lettering. During early 1993 production, silver lettering was eliminated, with only the MB star being silver. Later on in 1993, the entire airbox was black with no silver lettering/star whatsoever. This continued for all 1994 and 1995 produced models.

I believe the 1992-1993 style original “full foam” air intake tubes have been NLA from MB for many years now, necessitating all new zoom tubes are the “upgraded” plastic+foam 1994-style tubes.

I should have clarified all 1992 airboxes! Thank you Gerry.

Good luck with sale! I know there are a number of members who have been looking for “the right car” ... and this example is certainly a contender for these choosy buyers.

Have you considered BringATrailer to advertise this car? Nice examples of various models have been bringing huge money there lately, so it’s very possible you could exceed your asking price.

There is also a V-8 subforum of the W124 forum over at Banzworld.com, which caters to the 400E & 500E models. A lot of very knowledgeable and well-heeled collector-type folks hang out over there, and Banzworld has very broad internet exposure. I think there is a “500E for sale” forum there.

Hopefully someone here approaches you privately and you make a quick and mutually agreeable sale.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

Really Nice Car! You should sell it on BaT and see if you can get all. the. dollars. for. it. Hell, if USD 24K is possible for a 17Kmi E320, then I wonder what a top condition 500E will go for (and to be frank - I've never ever seen a top condition 500E change hands on BaT).

Couple of really nitpicky things that weren't addressed in earlier posts --

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

WELCOME to the Forum!!

It looks like you have a great car for sale.

There are too many picky people here. I have yet to see those rubber strips on the fenders that stay in place unless you mechanically fasten them or glue them down. My only comment is they should have been put back in place for the pic.
He still has the original radio and wheels if someone wants it to put them back on the car to make it original. Regardless of how well it has been looked after, it still has been driven 62k miles. It has not been in a vacuum tube for the last 26 years. There is bound to be a few flaws. If he has the records to back up the maintenance done. IMOP he has a WINNER!!!
It would be great to get the undercarriage pics before he sells it.

This looks like a great 98% original car to me. A set of e-Code lights would really set it off.

Let’s hope he gets his price it can only help the rest of us when and if you want to sell your own car.

Good Luck w/ the Sale Matthew

The early 1992 vacuum tube for the power brake booster is shaped differently, and goes under the air inlet foam tube. 1993-up (and possibly late 1992 USA model year) changed this to route above the tubes. Different tubes, different p/n's, the old style is NLA... they are interchangable. The early type makes it easier to R&R the airbox, but more difficult to access the spark plugs.

Nope, there is no donut on the vac pipe over the air intake tubes. Just a rubber grommet for the plastic decorative cover in front of the airbox.

Nits that I'd pick under the hood would be the rubber weatherstrips not in place (use metal clips like on the top firewall edge, or glue); and is that green coolant I see? Hard to tell in the photos.

Overall the car looks VERY clean. If the stereo would be IASCA competitive, I'd consider that a major bonus. Serious collectors won't like it though, regardless of how good it sounds. I like the Porsche plate frame, have a similar one on my E500!

The rubber grommet is in place. I never liked the idea of using adhesive on the weather strips or adding clips to them and wanted to present the car honestly. Coolant is Mercedes-Benz coolant, also running a Mercedes-Benz battery.

As far as the stereo, I can remove and replace if desired. The trunk carpet was cut and re-seamed around the XES brain box in the trunk, however I have a virgin NOS trunk carpet in plastic from Mercedes which is included. Everything was done with great care that it can be returned to stock easily. I also have in my collection of spares one of the last remaining (possibly NLA) passenger front fender cladding pieces (again NOS Mercedes) again - included.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62Kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

It's sad, but most of us have Wavey plastic trim-It''s one of my pet peeves.
If you look at the same period Lexus with the same style trim, no waves or sunken in lower cladding.

The photos are exaggerating the way the door cladding looks in person - I just went to look at it closely and the driver's side is nearly perfect - I can make out a very slight wave in each of the passenger side door cladding pieces, but given the originality and condition I would not want to disturb them.

Superb indeed. Nice plate and frame. And stereo, of course. GLWS.

I do not recall if the coolant was blue. It was a couple years ago that it was last changed. Thank you for the welcome - I have been a member since 2012 and used to be more active on the old 500Ecstasy forum. Tried several times to update my signature before posting because the fleet has changed but the system is not letting me do it! I have two 124 wagons and a newer SL. My other 500E was a daily driver for several years and I racked up an additional 140k miles on that car after I bought it at 115k, so I have a lot of seat time in these.

Nice car. I'm certainly giving serious thought to it. The stereo has me a bit concerned. I always seem to inherit a mess with "aftermarket" installations. Might not be the case with this one, but it's always on my mind when I'm looking at top-shelf automotive selections, such as this one.

I probably need to unload my E63S before making a move on another sedan.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Black, 62kmi, $50K (Philadelphia, PA)

Matthew - that level of OCD is seriously impressive

- The fact that you wash it max 3-times a year -- (I assume the rest of the year is all quick-detailer)
- The fact that the trims are still black and not faded to shiny-reflective-look
- The fact that the inner barrels of the wheels are clean
- The fact that the grille was plastic-dipped black to make the chrome strips pop --- I need to copy this technique. My own grille is a faded grey.
- Who did the powder coating on the calipers with the star logo --- was that Renewed Finishes on the East Coast? Very Nice.

One of the best cosmetic things one can do to these cars from a $ to benefit ratio is replacing the old grille insert with a new one and getting new chrome strips. It’s really amazing how much fresher it makes the front end look. Especially if you already have nice new headlights.

The installation was performed by the top shop in my area - the one that the Ferrari dealer, Porsche dealer, Rolls-Royce dealer, etc. sends cars to. He is a huge Benz guy himself and was the third owner of this car. If you have a 600 limo, a 113 SL, a 108 etc. and you do not want someone to mess it up - you take it to this guy.

Agree. It's very hard to improve on these cars aesthetically but i find a black grill (on 92/93 MY) looks nicer than grey as well.

MTM, a very nice looking 036. GLWS

Very Nice.

I am indeed very OCD when it comes to this car. I do not use quick detailer - I prefer a California duster. The calipers with the star are from the factory - they area untouched and original. The grill improvement is very subtle and no one notices it unless I point it out.

Nice car! Looks very solid and kept up all around. Good luck with the sale.

I agree it would be interesting to see what a top level E500E would do on BAT but I wonder how high a reserve they would allow for a top level E500E because pretty much all the previous sales have been avg to below avg cars and my understanding is that BAT more or less has to approve your reserve price because they want to make sure lots of cars sell thru.

One of the best cosmetic things one can do to these cars from a $ to benefit ratio is replacing the old grille insert with a new one and getting new chrome strips. It’s really amazing how much fresher it makes the front end look. Especially if you already have nice new headlights.

Agreed. That was one of the first things I did. I still have the old one, and I’m tempted to play with some “refurb” on it. I’m still on the fence about Euro lenses, although I have the headlights on reserve.

Now that’s interesting. My ‘92 car has silver/gray/aluminum calipers. So are yours the Brembos everyone claims came on ‘92 cars?

Yes - my other 500E had these same calipers on it. Only the fronts were painted, not the rears. BTW this car has never had the caliper hum issue.

May I ask - how did you prep the grey grill before plastic-dipping it? Mine seems "powdery" and wiping it with water and a microfiber towel seems to yield more "Fresh powder."

...Nope, there is no donut on the vac pipe over the air intake tubes. Just a rubber grommet for the plastic decorative cover in front of the airbox.

So this donut is not a factory-original item? I see it often on various cars on the intrawebz, but mebbe everyone just has the same idea...

One of my body guys did it for me several years ago, so I am not sure what he did to prep it - has held up perfectly though. I never experienced a powdery issue with it before or after it was done. I had the same thing done on one of my wagons, and have put over 10,000 miles on it since, with no issue.

Jlaa, i think if you do a light media blasting you can remove any surface oxidation and provide some texture for the paint to adhere to. If you were to use car paint, you’d have to have a plasicizer and prime the grille too.

I know this because my 199 car has a grille which is painted 199.

Jlaa, you have officially served me a Jelmerian award! :D You are correct - the wide/narrow rubber donut (kinda like a piece of rubber hose) is original / correct on 1993-up .034/.036 vacuum pipes. Seems the donut often moves around and may be located in different areas of the pipe, but likely belongs in the position shown in your photo. I had completely forgotten about this until you posted the photo, and then I had to go check some of my cars to confirm! Odd that it's MIA on this car, unless it slid down out of sight in the photo. Regardless, that wouldn't affect my purchase decision one iota.

Trivia: On my 93-up 036's, I have replaced this pipe with the 1992 style, to allow easier R&R of the airbox at the dragstrip. That vac pipe is really in the way when you're in a hurry trying to make your lane call...

I looked and drove Matthews car and I have 39 years experience buying and selling Mercedes Benz and his car is as close to perfect as you can get.
The car is exactly as he describes,he is a longtime 500E owner and knows how to maintain these cars.

WELCOME to the Forum!!

It looks like you have a great car for sale.

There are too many picky people here. I have yet to see those rubber strips on the fenders that stay in place unless you mechanically fasten them or glue them down. My only comment is they should have been put back in place for the pic. Good Luck w/ the Sale Matthew

Yes, sad but true. We'd demand a bacteria count on the milk of human kindness. Still, it's always interesting and educational, even for me.

Lol, those rubber strips at the underhood fender flanges. I have secured all of those exactly the same way since late 1985. Straight into the garbage can...
