Splash Guard behind CAN Box

I removed this plastic guard for the first time today.

It seems the guard is supposed to be clipped under the bonnet seal with 4 clips. These clips are wicked little barbed things with a tenacious grip in the say 1.5mm thick plastic that the guard is made from.

The top of the splash guard did not follow the contour of the bonnet rubber seal so there are gaps to pull in.

The clips are too strong (and not designed) to clip over the splash guard and the bonnet rubber seal mounting rail.

Under the splash guard i found the Ignition resistor selector still locked with wire and crimped seal. I cleaned up superficially and checked that no electrical connections were loose.

Refitting the splash guard was a real struggle and so I gave up leaving the guard in place but not clipped.

I can see why the splash guard is missing on my UK car.

Jim.

As far as I know, the splash guard was only used on early cars. My '94 and most E500E's I've seen do not have the guard fitted.

+1 with Glen. I like the splash guard but they are NLA, and appear to only have come on very early build cars.

Correct, I've only seen them on a few cars - 1991 and early 1992 models. I actually think (IIRC) that Cannoli's car has a splashguard.

Other 124s (such as my 1995 E320 wagon) have them even in later years.

Cheers,
Gerry

I know that Cannoli had posted a photo of his guard in place on 500Ecstasy. I haven't seen him on this forum for a while, but perhaps if he sees this he can post the photo for reference on this thread.

Glen, are you or Vinnie in contact with Norm? Could you push him to post his splashguard photo to the forum?

Cheers,
Gerry

Cannoli definitely has one on his car. I talk to him fairly regularly but he's been really busy.

I don't believe that it's an E500E-specific part. What's pictured, if it's from an 036, looks identical to the one that my wife's 1995 124 wagon has, as well as the shield in a friend's 1992 300CE coupe.

Cheers,
Gerry

The splash shields for the 500E are .036-specific. Shields used on other models are not shaped the same and will not fit without modifications. I have not tried retrofitting the 6-cyl shield to the V8 though.
