FYI, these lighting units are from a 4/5/6-cylinder 124 chassis (300E, etc)... not a 400E.

:124:

What's the difference between them and 400E?
Headlight housings used on the V8 models (400E/500E) have a vent connector that attaches to a short length of rubber hose. This is because the V8 models have the air intake surrounding the headlights, and if not vented outside the air intake bucket, moisture can get pushed inside the headlight assemblies. The V8 lights are vented through the short hose to the engine compartment, separated from the pressurized air intake enclosure.

The lights shown in the photos in post #1 do not have the connector for the hose, and the connector must be added prior to installation on the 034/036 chassis. The connector is NLA from Mercedes but I think a 3D printed copy is available somewhere.

Very useful info. Can you show me some pictures of the differences? I looked on the internet but couldn't find any major difference in the appearance.

I wonder how critical the hose is? I don't ever recall mine having them ever since euros were installed.
Likely depends how much the car is driven in wet weather. In the rain, at freeway speeds, there will be moisture pushed into the headlamps if the hose/connector isn't attached properly. Along with possibly clouding the inside of the lenses, it could also accelerate corrosion of the reflectors.

Garage queens that only see sunny days would never know the difference with the hose or connector missing.

:tigger:

If I know the diameter I could fabricate something similar. 3D model would be at great use as I'll replicate it.

I will have to check my E-Code lights that I installed years ago. I know that I didn’t install hoses and am not aware of that hose connector. Also that connector looks like it could be an optional add on part.

PS: My car has only been driven in the rain a few time during my 18 year ownership and that was early on. The lights still look brand new.

Terry, yes, the hose adapter was sold separately by MB as shown in the EPC screenshot above... but the part is now NLA.

@gsxr, Thanks Dave, I guess I’m lucky to live in a dry climate. To bad I just became aware of the hoses.

I did take your advise and cover the lenses with 20 mil Lamin-X protection. No damage whatsoever. :)

Cool! The Lamin-X won't prevent all damage, but it definitely helps.

You can add the small hoses, that's relatively easy. For 1992-93 USA cars there's a rubber plug closing the hole in the plastic housing, you remove this first, then insert the hose from connector through the hole. See photo below on a 1992 model.

1994-95 USA cars (034/036) have this hose installed from the factory, and all years of Euro-spec 034/036 have it from the factory. It was only 92/93 North American spec with USA/DOT headlights that weren't pre-hosed.
