I guess their trim has broken locking tabs due to incorrect disassembly at some point in their cars life. The trim is hooked in place, and shall NOT be pulled straight outwards!
It has to be gently pressed inwards - then carefully pushed sideways a bit to release the hooks. The sideways direction is outwards/away from the steering column on each side. Even then the tiny hooks easily break.

...just guess how I learned that...

There should be 4 hooks total, 2 on each side. You need at least 1 on each side to keep the trim properly in place. As Arnt described above, be careful!!
