1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 123kmi, $20k (Brazoria, TX)

No affiliation. This was initially listed at $13,500 and less than 24 hours later the price jumped to $20k, apparently the seller figured out they under-priced it. Appeared to sell within the following 24 hours or so. Documenting here for posterity, and for when the flipper relists for $40k. Might still be listed as "one owner" on a skipped title, lol. 🤣

1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 126kmi, $45k (Houston, TX)

This car is showing on Hemmings from a Houston Dealer - "Driver Source". Asking $45K.

Dealer says "Will not last!". Don't know if that is referring to mechanical condition or what?

DESCRIPTION
1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E
VIN No. WDBEA36E4NB799587
Engine 119974 12 005123
Transmission 722365 03 737368
Color: BLUE-BLACK - METALLIC PAINT (199U) over Gray (71)
Upholstery: LEATHER ANTHRACITE (271)
Production: June 1992
The ''wolf in sheep's clothing'' jointly developed between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche
Powered by the 5.0-liter ''M119'' V-8 Engine, factory-rated at 326 hp
Desirably Specified with rear roller blind, an electric sunroof, electrically adjustable steering column, heated electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, and automatic climate control and more!
Exceptionally Preserved in Stock Configuration
Complemented by Proper 17'' Evo Wheels (original wheels included)
A Splendid example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most revered production models
The Mercedes-Benz 500 E utilized an engineering relationship with Stuttgart-based neighbor, Porsche. The latter company was briefed to stretch the front frame rails of the Mercedes-Benz W124 chassis to accommodate the newly Le Mans-tested ''M119'' V-8 powerplant in the engine bay.
Fitment of the potent-yet-compact 5.0-litre, 32-valve, quad-cam, short-stroke, all-aluminium engine necessitated uprated suspension and brakes in order to handle the additional power, while affording it the dynamics of a genuine E34-generation BMW M5-rivalling saloon.
The addition of the uprated suspension and brakes required 56mm of additional wheel arch width, meaning the car simply would not fit down the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen production line. The result was a complex build process whereby Porsche adapted the chassis before Mercedes-Benz painted it, then Porsche hand-assembled the car before Mercedes-Benz signed it off. Each phase required transportation between the two assembly lines, resulting in an assembly time of 18 days per car.
The end package, however, was outstanding. The 500 E enthralled the motoring media and was instantly and widely proclaimed as one of the best sport saloons of all time. Modest criticism arose only when it came to the car's cost; because of the complex production and engineering processes, the model cost more than DM 130,000 when new, with the equivalent BMW M5 closer to DM 80,000.
This well-optioned and well-presented example is accompanied by original books and emergency equipment. The rarity of Stuttgart's two rival powerhouse manufacturers joining forces, makes this potent and collaborative effort quite special.
$44,500.00

They claim $13k spent on maintenance from 2021-2023...could have at least replaced the awful air intake tubes. Possible deck lid paintwork from poorly placed emblem? Pedestrian W124 rear glass?

$4k of that $13k could be Evos and tires. EDIT - the wheels are Maxilite replicas, not genuine Evos.

Pity about the wrong rear glass, that's not easy nor cheap to replace (if even available). Odd that the emissions decal is missing above the driver headlight, but is present above the passenger headlight. Hmmm. @cascade, is that Stage III or IV of DDD?

Looks like a dealer picked it up in summer 2022 and a title was issued in summer 2023.

"Notable 2021-2023 Services Performed, $13,000 Invested
• Refurbished Braking, Cooling, Fuel, Ignition, Air Conditioning and Suspension Systems
• New Fluids, Filters, Tires, and Suede Headliner
Successful 2023 Tejas Turismo : Texas Hill Country Rally Participant"

My guess is that car will be quickly sold at $45k and no one will care about zoom tubes or NLA rear glass or emissions decals.

That said, the wheels and interior are doing the most for the car's condition. But they can't get headlight doors, or intake tubes without coming here, unfortunately.

I'd want to see receipts / details for the following. This could either be great stuff for the new owner, or marketing fluff with no substance:
• Refurbished Braking, Cooling, Fuel, Ignition, Air Conditioning and Suspension Systems

Kind of a stupid question here - and not really something I care about with my 300D. But curious for all the DIY work I've been doing (or let's say seller did the work themselves for this car in question), would it be worthwhile to create an invoice or some kind of record that could be shared (staple the parts purchase to it, etc)?

In general, if you can keep a paper trail to show future buyers, that would be very helpful. At a minimum the record/receipt for the part purchase. A full invoice of some sort would be awesome, but quite a bit of work.

I struggle with this also, and compounding the problem is that since I have a dozen cars, my part orders include parts for multiple different cars. If I copy the part receipts and put them into each different vehicle folder, it looks like a bunch of other parts were ordered... so then I'd need to identify each item separately on the receipt, etc. Which is why I just keep an XLS for each vehicle with date/miles/repair/cost, but I'd have to locate the specific part receipt manually if a buyer wanted to see that.

:gsxrepc:

I also have more than one MB. I keep a paper and pencil detailed log of each car and an overall receipt file where one could identify a receipt and match it to a service. This should be good for all but the truly hopelessly suspicious. It's enough work just doing the wrenching.

Ahh this is not the one owned by the individual I was thinking of, but I am aware of another black one (3 actually) here in Houston. This one I was thinking of had TGA do about 30k of work all at once, and it included upper oil pan gasket replacement in addition to several other common engine replacement items on the top side.

Now at Bonhams Amelia...

THE MERCEDES-BENZ 500E

Mercedes-Benz introduced a muscular new W124 at the 1990 Paris Salon. The 500E super saloon had been developed with surprise assistance from Porsche, and was even hand built at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory, with its subtly widened bodywork hiding a potent 5.0-liter, 32-Valve V8, massive brakes, and reworked suspension.

The production process involved each and every 500E being transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau factory in Zuffenhausen; each car taking a full eighteen days to complete. Despite possessing all the luxury accoutrements associated with a flagship Mercedes-Benz, the 500E was lighter than the 500 SL sports car. Powered by the latter's 326bhp V8 engine, the 500E delivered shattering performance, reaching 100km/h (62mph) in 6.1 seconds and topping out at around 260km/h (162mph), yet retaining the vault-like quality and dependability that made the standard W124 a legend.

THE CAR OFFERED

The Mercedes-Benz 500E offered here hails from 1992 and is an excellent, cherished example benefiting from recent cost-no-object maintenance and showing 125,421 miles at the time of cataloguing. Beautifully presented in Blue-Black Metallic (199U) with gray cladding and Anthracite leather (271), it looks particularly fetching sitting on factory 500E Evo wheels. For the purist, the original alloys will be included. Options include the rear roller blind, heated electrically adjustable memory front seats, automatic climate control, adjustable steering column, sunroof, and Becker Grand Prix 2000 radio.

The consignor reports that between 2021 and 2023, this car received $13,000 in maintenance to the fuel system, ignition, cooling system, climate control, suspension, and brakes. The suede headliner was replaced, and the car received new fluids, filters, and new Continental tires. It has been enjoyed as intended, participating in the Tejas Turismo, Texas Hill Country Rally in 2023. Original books, owner's manuals, warranty card, emergency accessories, Carfax Report and recent service records are included.

The 500E is a rising star for collectors, appealing to both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche enthusiasts alike, or anyone who appreciates a rock-solid, mile-crushing muscle car in a finely tailored suit.

Is it just me, or do some of those service invoices look fishy/fake...? Kinda like the work was done in-house and nobody actually paid $13k for that work? Sort of, "$13k value of work performed"?

@cascade may need undercarriage photos for a proper keyboard PPI, which of course we won't see prior to auction on Feb-29.

:watchdrama:

They look a little weird with no vendor shown on them, no signature, and the PAID stamp literally in the exact same spot on the paper. It almost looks like a computer template. But I don't doubt the work was done. I didn't bother to reality check the hourly work rate. Car looks worse than its mileage to me.

EXACTLY.

Me neither, but I'm not crazy about fictional invoices that imply $13k changed hands, when it may not have.

:scratchchin:

Well well well... look what we have here, for sale once again.

I had the notification pop up in my email also. Looks like they just copy and pasted the details from the Bonhams auction. So what's the consensus on this car? Has anyone seen this car in person? From reading the thread it seems you guys think the car is a little fishy and not a really nice one. Correct me if I'm wrong but this will be the third time the car has sold in the last 2 years.

This just popped up in my email..says sold for $38K.

Edit - checked the Hammer Price app and apparently it sold both at Bonhams AND Worldwide for $38K - once in February and now again in April...see attached.

New TN dealer paid $42k for this plus transport from TX to TN... probably in it for $45k, and is listing for $50k?

I'm no math wiz nor a business savant, but them there numbers don't make sense.

Also, I didn't know "Cold Air Conditioning" was optional equipment. Wonder what code number that is.

:yayo:

That's a lot of work for $5k. I'm thinking some sort of "consignment."

I see used car dealers have gone from being car guys back to being used car dealers again. 😒

maw

Hi, as people from this board have also helped me when I was putting together the list of G63 V12 VINs (BTW. I´am still missing at least one VIN of the LB:MA 2002...) I have decided to post here the list of special AMG Gs I have gathered this far. Of some cars I have the VINs of the whole production run of some other cars I have just a few VINs of some I have just one example... If you have more such VINs please share them :)
