Hello everyone!

I am a young guy from Bielefeld, Germany. I love cars that give me that special feeling.
I want to show you my ´89 300E 3.2 AMG. It´s an original car (certified by AMG) from Japan with all the goodies. Full Bodykit, Engine, Suspension, Interior, Exhaust.
I bought it in September of 2022 and did a lot of work to it. As most of it is already done, I want to share it´s story.

DSC00199_1 (1).jpg
Here is the car in the beautiful Ostwestfalen dawn.

Here in action.

DSC06704.jpg

DSC06928.jpg
And here in my garden (u can see my dads SEC just slightly in the corner)

This is the car that I bought:

When I bought it the AMG wasn´t in bad condition, but it had it´s issues. Mainly one that surfaced later: the previouse owner had engine work done and cheaped out a lot, which resulted in a small piece of the piston in cylinder 5 that broke off, so it burned Oil like crazy. We´re talking litres per 100km. I decided to have the engine professionally overhauled by a shop that specialised on 80s Mercedes (that I also bought the car from, yeah I know...) .

I sourced new pistons from an M104.992 (E320). They had to be oversized, so it wasn´t easy, but I found a brand new set from Nüral.
The shop also replaced every Part that could wear out, bored and honed the cylinders and resurfaced the block and cylinderhead.

Although the engine does look quite good from the inside.

Also some more "while you´re in there".

Foto 13.06.23, 20 29 46 (2).jpg
Also no doubt the engine is original AMG, there were no stamps, but you can see, that work has been done to it. Also the Enginenumber on the block matches the VIN.

While waiting for the car (wich was a long time) I looked for a decent sport exhaust. The AMG exhaust are known for their extreme rust issues. So naturally, my exhaust rusted through completely. Good thing was: I still had it.
Sport exhausts for the 124 are rather rare and expensive, so I looked around for someone to replicate my AMG Exhaust. I found a company in Bayern and shipped my Exhaust to them (which wasn´t easy at all). They did a very well Job in replicating the original ESD and MSD in stainless steel. The sound is not loud at all, but very deep and rich. Also no drone and it adheres to the decibel limit the car has perfectly (paper says 94db max and I measured 95db).

After I got the car back and I broke the engine in I began to change some more things.
I sourced NOS C-pillar covers (no photos of that), because the old ones were completely broken.

I still had a set of 17" Aero Is, so I had them powdercoated and put on new rubber.

After

Then I did some cosmetic work. I had the Valvecover and AMG emblem powdercoated in black for the original AMG look.
Also I painted the exhaust headers in white with ceramic paint.
And I replaced the airfilter housing and filter, because the old housing had a few broken parts and a selfmade 3rd air intake. It doesn´t look perfect, but these housings are quite rare.

After

Right about at that time I had a strange knocking sound from the engine bay. After investigation I found out that the NEW and ORIGINAL vibration damper broke. The rubber had desintegrated.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 222.07.34.jpeg
It had completely seperated.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.027.30.jpeg
Of course some other things got damaged as well. I ended up replacing the fan pulley aswell.

"while in there" I decided to do some more things. I had a lot of the hardware I removed zink plated to restore its original look.

They look even nicer in person!

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.40.52.jpeg
Here the old and the new damper.

Also I replaced the ignition cover and distributor.
WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.07.35.jpeg
The old one has cracks and is corroded inside.

Also a new radiator.
WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at2 22.07.35.jpeg
Old one was in quite bad condition.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.027.31.jpeg
You can still see some of the metal shards from the vibration damper that sheared some of the fan pulley off.

After that "little" wrenching session I didn´t do some repairwork for some time.

But I did replace the wood trim in the interior, which was overdue since 2018.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.07.32.jpeg
This just looks absolutely bad.

DSC05286.jpg
The difference is just night and day.

DSC05198.jpg
I could bathe in this all day every day.

For quite some time the brake light on the dash was on and the car needed new TÜV, so I replaced all of the brakes front and back. Those pads needed replacing BAD.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 222.07.32.jpeg
New one compared to the old one.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 222.07.35.jpeg
I just love new brakes (and ceramic paste).

That was everything mechanical I had on my to-do list.

Some time after that I woke up to a little desaster. The car dumped all of its coolant onto the driveway. I think a seal in the Waterpump had gave in after I had a rather "dynamic" drive on the Autobahn. So that was next and it had to happen fast, because I needed the car.
WhatsApp Image 2026-01-04 at 22.43.32.jpeg
Just love to see it.
At first I thought the seal between the pump and the block blew, so I took out the pump and resealed it. Turns out, the pump itself leaked. It wasn´t original anyways.
So new Waterpump it was. Got one from SKF, at least a good quality manufacturer.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-024 at 22.42.01.jpeg
Not the ideal circumstances, but what will you do.

Now that is it up until now. Of course, it´s not perfect, wiper is a bit slow and the cruise control isn´t working. Also having problems with the tachometer cable.
But those were the most important bits. There is still a lot that I haven´t shown (like the headlight wipers I had painted and replaced).

I also have a question:
Is there any information on the production numbers of the 3.2 AMG? I know the documentation is not very good and I have asked AMG directly, they won´t give out any information.

Please feel free to ask anything!!

Wow. What a neat car... original AMG, and it looks fantastic! You did a great job with the restoration.

For the slow monowiper, try lubricating the shaft first. If there's not a substantial improvement, you will probably need to disassemble the entire mechanism to remove / replace the old dried-out lubricant. Full details are in this thread.

I'm sure you know the most common problem with cruise control is the "amplifier", or control module, located below the steering shaft inside the car. The speedometer drive cable can cause issues with cruise control and a bouncing speedo needle. The routing of the cable is CRITICAL. Look at the FSM information and routing diagrams. Sadly, I believe the OE/Genuine cable is NLA, so hopefully it doesn't need replacement. Aftermarket cables are not the same quality as OE.

@WDB748372 - is there any 3.2L AMG data in the datacards? Not sure if there will be much from the 1980's. It's a shame AMG refuses to share what information they have.

hey gsxr, thank you so much for the warm welcome!!
I will have to look into your tips. Unfortunately I already replaced the speedo cable, because the old one was kinked. I may have routed it wrong. When the car warms up the noise stops, so it isn't so bad, but when its cold you can't really hear anything else.

Should I do some threads about my 300E-24 and my Cayman 987 aswell?

Sure, if you have a 300E-24 also... you can post about that too! The Cayman would be in "off topic" but anything car-related is always welcome. 😁

For the squeaking speedo cable, fiddle with the routing. On the OE cables there are marks where the metal clips attach to the cable, one is near the firewall / floor. I forget if there's a second clip somewhere. The FSM shows a plastic guide tube up top behind the cluster, I think this was phased into production prior to 1989 so your car may already have this.

Yes, my car has the guide tube, I have to experiment withe the thicker plastic sleeve, because it sits very wierdly.
And I will try to make a new thread about the 24V tomorrow, I did a lot with that car.
Always nice to talk to great people with the same passion and so much knowledge about these cars!!

Nothing found in the 124.030 chassis as I suspected. The first Mercedes AMG collaboration was for the W201 190E M103 3.2L and the W124 was offered with the M104 3.4L at that time, not the 3.2L. So only Mercedes-AMG themselves would know the production numbers. My guess, given the 190E 3.2 and 300E/CE/TE, would be 100-200 of the 300E 3.2L. I see them about the same frequency online.

It´s an original car (certified by AMG) from Japan with all the goodies. Full Bodykit, Engine, Suspension, Interior, Exhaust.
Is this the AMG Classic Conversion Confirmation certification? If so, curious how AMG Germany certifies what AMG Japan did. Very clean car! I was looking for either a 3.2 or 3.4 for some time but just never happened.

@Niklas32,
First :welcome3:to the 500Eboard.

Thanks for the very nice pictorial and write up on your 300E 3.2 AMG. Your introduction inspired me to tell how I was introduced to Mercedes Benz. My first Mercedes was a 1957 190SL that my wife had to have but it got me started on my way. I spotted a black 300E with a “Blended Ducktail” that really caught my eye so next thing I knew I had purchased an 1986 300E Champagne/Saddle which remained stock until I lowered it with Eibach Springs and installed 17” Monoblocks. I loved the look but did not further mods with it and drove it for a couple of years and sold it.

Next up I purchased my 1993 040 Blk/Blk 500E in October of 2004 and have owned it now for 21+ years. I’m now 83 with no intentions of giving up my beloved 500E.

Any this is probably TMI but I just want to say it looks like your hooked on Benz and still have a long time to pursue your passion. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing more threads on your cars.

Take Care

Thank you so much for your kind words!!

Those early numbers are seemingly lost and I don´t really understand why AMG doesn´t want to publish them, since they clearly know about them.
I think 100-200 Cars as well, on par with the 3.4. Although I see a lot of 3.4 cars for sale currently, the 3.2s in the W124 seem to be quite rare.

Here is a picture of my certificate. Numbers matching and everything. I got in touch with them quite early and they were extremely helpful. I think my car was even one of the first ones to be certified (I recieved my Certificate only 2 months ago tho).
WhatsApp Image 2026-01-05 at 16.39.07.jpeg

Now @WDB748372 what do you mean with "looking for"?

So happy for all of your warm greetings and kind words!! I don´t know why I didn´t post earlier, because I know this platform for quite some time now.

Also interesting to see how we all seem to have gotten into Mercedes by more or less the same way! One car that started it all.
For me it was my dads 560SEC where I sat in the back on my childseat.

WhatsApp Image 2026-01-05 at 16.49.15.jpeg
Sadly we had to sell it 2 years ago .

Here is a picture of my certificate. Numbers matching and everything.
Interesting. What did you provide about your car to obtain the certificate, besides the VIN? I was going to say maybe if these 3.2L engines had some AMG stamping, I can see AMG Classic requesting a photo of the AMG stamp under the original engine serial number and verifying it that way even if it was AMG Japan that did it but not sure if these 3.2L engines have any stamping like the 3.4L's do "AMG 104 3.4 XXX" (See photo attached)

I think my car was even one of the first ones to be certified (I recieved my Certificate only 2 months ago tho).
The certifications were available Summer of 2024 when I originally got mine. I remember AMG Classic explaining the process and it seemed relatively new then, maybe started beginning of the year or something.

Now @WDB748372 what do you mean with "looking for"?
I just meant looking to purchase but never found the right car for the right price. Maybe one day.

I only had to provide a picture of the engine code and some of the interior and exterior that was it. The earlier AMG 3.2s didn´t have the AMG stamping, that came with the later 190E 3.2s, I think. Or could be that just some got it and some didn´t.

The certifications were shipped out in Summer ´24, but they could be ordered before that.

My Engine doesn´t have any AMG stampings aswell. None on the cam or the block. The cam is original, I know that because it got reground some time ago with an original AMG one as a sample (It just had some pitting, it wasn´t an original 300E one that was reground to AMG spec).

Hallo Niklas,

welcome (willkommen!) to the board.. and cheers on your AMG 3.2 from 1989!
You've done an amazing work on the areas of interior trim, engine mechanical upgrade and maintenance as well :)

One question arouses about your father's 560SEC, is it maybe painted/delivered as 'Bisonbraun' from the factory?
It looks really amazing!

Regards/VG

Hey!
Thank you, very nice to be welcomed so warmly!
A car as special as this one needs special attention and detail.

The SEC is indeed factory Bisonbraun with creme beige leather interior! Maybe not my first choice, but very unique und beautiful!

The engine was just amazing. Such a great car for cruising.
I remember doing a drac race with the SEC against my AMG and the SEC won by quite a margin, just can´t beat the V8.
One of those cars that you regret ever selling.

My dad had a lot of cool cars, two beetles, a C63, 997 and a g-body 911 (which I am by far the most sad about).
Any thread where those pictures would fit in?

@Niklas32 I wish all the best at your AMG's ongoing auction!

And I'll just leave for posterity (and datacard nerds like me 👌🏽👏🏽) some information here:

Your 987? Yes please, in the market for one myself

Thank you all for the kind words, really means a lot to me!! Honestly sad to let it go, but it has been a great companion and a lot of fun.
Not a museum piece, but I am mighty proud of it and all of the work I have done, even if it was quite the learning curve 😂 . I really hope it is getting into good hands!

@2phast currently working on completely overhauling the suspension, when I am done with that I will do a thread showing all of that! Your choice is very good, I think there is no better raw-driving experience for the money!
