DMV / Carfax reporting - Smog test clowns made an error on my Smog certificate

I just noticed the knuckleheads who did my smog testing locally to me (North County Smog and Repair in San Marcos, California) added 10k miles to my odometer readings on their smog certificate report. I bought the car at 186k on the chassis and they reported 196.8k. I called them and they said there is no way to create an error update to the DMV computer. They proposed smogging my car again (for free) and suggested that'd replace the data in the DMV computer. The title I turned in to DMV at the time of sale had the correct reading ~ 186.xK. I hate to think these clowns would lead to raising some future concern about odometer validity.

From reviewing carfax reports, I think every event is recorded. Can anyone confirm?

Anyone have any thoughts on how I should handle this? Of if there is a process with DMV to file a complaint / correction?

As of now, I plan to have them retest and sign a letter stating their error. I don't really care so much about this now, but know in the past that this stuff can matter when it comes time to sell.

Thank you,

Doug

That sucks, I've never seen that personally but I've heard of it happening. I don't know what to tell you...I hope you can get it straightened out.

Hopefully a retest, and sending the corrected data to DMV a few days after the incorrect data, should alleviate any concerns from CarFax / AutoCheck. These systems usually are good about ignoring typos like this but it is VERY smart to try and fix it immediately. Getting a written document signed by the offending shop is even better... keep that with your other paperwork for if/when you re-sell in the future.

Not that this will help now, but I always fill out the smog form myself and wrote down the odometer reading in their form.

It happens more that you would think, and it sucks if they don't fix it as the car now looks fishy

Dave,
I smogged on 12/17. It was 5 weeks ago already. I feel lucky I caught the mistake. I may file a complaint with the BAR against them. At least I'd have formal records of it and thought BAR may have the power to correct . I also have photos date stamped of the odometer.
In my mind errors happen, but this is SUPER sloppy and a big pain in the a$$ for me and potentially expensive if I didn't catch their mistake. Not much check and balance here, except to do things Steve's way. Though, everytime I've had a smog done, the tech has been specific that they want to write the numbers. Seems self serving possibly for customers to write their own odometer readings into the system.

Doug, do they give you a printout of the data transmitted to DMV? Just wondering if there's a way to catch this at the time of the error, or better yet before the data is sent to DMV...

Yeah, they do give you a printout of the smog certificate. I missed it. It was bundled with the test results, the receipt and credit car slip. Honestly, I never would have thought to review their work. Never again...

Doug

Each time I filled out the form, the tech would look at the odometer and double check my figures. I take my car to small shops in West L.A. or the in the Valley next to my service machenic and they always ask me to fill out the form while they get the car ready, maybe it's just the shops I go to.
