Unfortunate auction result...RNM yet bid to almost US$300k...

Classic MB Market fake bidding... :hammerhead:Seller would have taken that amount all day, especially given the condition and presentation of the car.
No. The winning bidder is a longtime, respected Mercedes repair shop that specializes in Hammers and DOHC M117 engines. Not a fake bidder.

Who are you to waltz in here and claim that kind of BS? Do you know the seller OR the high bidder?

:stickpoke:

What was the reserve ?
The reserve isn't public. Someone would need to contact the seller and ask. Haven't heard if @jhodg5ck made a deal after the auction ended.

What about the competing bidders with zero history. So sure someone just starts bidding on this car out of nowhere. In your well established presence, what do you put for the number on the car?

This one being closest comparable IMO:

I don’t know or care about the others, but the bid winner is one of very few true experts of these cars going back decades.

I live in Sweden, I would have zero hesitation in shipping my car overseas to him and his workshop even though I’ve never met him.

That’s why the community here reacts to your claim like this, he’s just highly respected and trusted.

Bidders with no history are always suspicious. I do not like that MBM does not show when a user account was created, like BaT does. Could some of them have been shills? Yup. MBLover_126 seems to be a n00b. theegor appears legit and bought a car on MBM a year ago.

I am REALLY bad about value estimates, especially on unicorns like these. It generally depends what trust fund kiddo happened to be watching that auction, on that day. However, since a well-known buyer legitimately bid $280k, I'd have to say that a value in the $250-$300k ballpark is not outrageous, although it is a lot higher than the BaT comp you listed. The BaT sale was 2 years ago though, and I don't know if there's any difference between the cars to justify the price gap.

Top bidders below. Six people over $200k is pretty decent support for a price over $200k USD:

$280,126 bid placed by @BlueridgeMB
$277,000 bid placed by @MBLover_126
$250,500 bid placed by @theegor
$234,000 bid placed by @KG77
$226,000 bid placed by @Sonderluck
$220,000 bid placed by @OldenGold
$185,000 bid placed by @KBowman

I'd love to know what the reserve was. It could also be a case of a seller setting a ridiculous reserve to "test the market".

I’m not questioning the winning bidder or his abilities per se. That said, I’ll repeat that the bidding seemed suspect.

From the seller’s side, at this price level—if the reserve really was that high—he should at least address the ball joints and other basic maintenance items. Engagement and responsiveness to questions were subpar. There were no driving videos, and he should have been far more knowledgeable about the engine—its health, valve adjustments, maintenance, etc.—all very basic expectations at this price point.

Lastly, once you factor in import fees and tariffs, this was all the money for an SEL with many unknowns.

Totally agree the seller could have done a better job with preparation, presentation, and engagement. Especially for a reserve that high.

Tariffs would have been interesting, if the car was coming to USA. Not sure how vehicles are treated, but Google implies it could have been as high as 25%. Most likely the buyer would find a way to store the car in Europe somewhere until it became more affordable to import to USA (unless he was bidding on behalf of a customer in Europe).
