Rare Japan market pre-merger AMG Upgraded 300TE Wagon with full set of AMG engine, chassis and body modifications.

Very special and unique 1991 Mercedes Benz 300TE-24 3.4 AMG that was imported from Japan. Built during the pre-merger era, this 300 TE wagon is an excellent example of a well-maintained AMG special that underwent the full AMG treatment with a 3.4 build done to it by AMG Japan. Overall condition is very good inside and out and the car runs well.

The dramatic silver exterior features a lowered profile and unique bumper and sill covers. Car is fitted with a factory sunroof, roof rails and AMG badges. Paint shows well, but does display minor signs of wear typical of a car that has been driven. Equipped with EVO style 6 spoke wheels and fresh Michelins on all 4 corners, this car has excellent balance and handling while still delivering an extremely comfortable ride quality.

The interior is in well preserved condition throughout. The perforated leather seats are in good shape with some minor wear and creasing. There are matching checkerboard floor mats over clean carpeting and the headliner is in excellent condition. The impressive dashboard offers a full complement of instruments and controls, and a center console. The ample wood trim makes an upscale impression, but does show some signs of aging consistent with the vintage. A Sony CD audio unit is fitted. One special feature is the rear facing third seat that adds utility. The Mercedes 300 series wagon is an outstanding design that provides ample space and functionality.

Under the hood lies the exciting heart of the matter - the AMG motor. Ordered as a 990 option car, this 300TE 24 valve has a M104 that was modified by AMG with a larger bore and a longer stroke for a displacement increase to 3.4 liters. The valvetrain was also fitted with AMG camshafts, contributing to claimed output of 268 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 243 lb-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. The air filter housing is topped by an AMG-branded lid. The stampings on the engine show the appropriate BOSCH, BERU, and Champion C9. AMG stampings on the front radiator support are still in place marking authenticity.

BRIEF MODEL HISTORY

The Mercedes-Benz 300TE is part of the W124 generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which was in production from 1984 to 1996. The 1991 Mercedes Benz 300TE is the wagon version of Mercedes W124 series. Offering many innovative features and advanced engineering along with attractive styling and functional design, the series was very successful remaining in production for over 10 years.

The W124 series, including the 300TE, is highly regarded among Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts. It is noted for its build quality, durability, and timeless, functional design. The AMG conversion offers significant performance and handling upgrades and is rarely found on a wagon.
This W124 model was a Japan market car that received a full AMG conversion in Japan.

AMG had been started as an aftermarket concern offering performance upgrades for Mercedes-Benz models. Their conversions being well engineered and favorably received AMG developed a special relationship with the factory and eventually were merged with Mercedes in 1999 becoming the performance brand within Mercedes. Prior to the merger AMG would modify production cars independently which were then marketed direct thru Mercedes.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300TE 3.4 AMG Wagon​

This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 300TE was modified by AMG when new, and it is powered by a 24-valve 3.4L M104 inline-six mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The wagon was imported to the US during previous ownership, and it shows 147k kilometers (~91k miles). Finished in metallic silver over black leather, it has 17″ Evo-style wheels, heated and power-adjustable front sport seats, a Sony stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, and rear-facing third-row seats. Engine, exhaust, transmission, and interior repairs totaling ~$20k were completed in 2023 by ISSIMI Meccanica of San Carlos, California. This AMG-modified S124 is now offered by the selling dealer in California with a clean Montana title.​

The car was finished at the factory in Brilliant Silver Metallic (744), and it has AMG valances and side skirts in addition to headlight wipers, fender-mounted indicator lights, roof rails, and dual AMG exhaust finishers that were fitted in 2023.​

Six-spoke 17″ wheels are mounted with 235/45 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) and anti-lock disc brakes are noted. An alignment was completed in October 2023.​

​

The heated and power-adjustable front sport seats are trimmed in black leather, and burred walnut wood trim accents the cabin, which has an electric sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a split-folding second row bench, and a Bluetooth-capable Sony stereo with a USB port. Upholstery was re-adhered and the driver’s interior door handle was repaired in 2023, and the center console trim was replaced.​

Mounted on a power-adjustable column, an airbag steering wheel frames the instrument cluster, which has an AMG-branded 280-km/h speedometer. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 147k kilometers (~91k miles). A mileage inconsistency is listed in a December 2022 entry on the Carfax report, which states that it may be the result of a clerical error.​

Modified by AMG to displace 3.4 liters, the 24-valve M104 inline-six was rated at approximately 276 horsepower and 243 ft-lb of torque when new, and it sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission, which was serviced with replacement fluid and adjustment of its Bowden cable in 2023.

Work in the past year also included refurbishing the fuel distributor, adjusting the exhaust system and throttle-linkage assembly, and replacing vacuum hoses and an oxygen sensor along with the intake manifold gasket, fuel injector seals, air-flow meter potentiometer, idle air control valve, and associated hoses. ​

I commented on this thing, and in typical BaT fashion, got flak from commenters. Since I can say it on here, I will. This thing is a mess.

It’s been addressed in those comments but I’ll lay it out again for discussion here. Mechanically it may be fine, looks like a lot of money was spent there which is good but I’m more of a cosmetics nerd.

The grille and front bumper are completely wrong, my guess is a Japanese owner changed it as this is common of Japanese cars. Bumper is correct to the face lifted grille, but the face lifted grille is on the wrong year car. If this was an E320, different story. Seller tried backing it up with a thread from a W126 forum? Weird.

Next, you have the DDD on the cluster. Car isn’t even that high of mileage and it is bad. I don’t need to say much there. Pillars are peeling and considering how much money was put in, I can’t believe they didn’t fix that since it only costs a couple hundred to do. It was also conveniently not mentioned until someone asked. Again, weird.

This looks very fun and cool, but I fear the buyer will run into the same kind of car I ran into. Riddled with little cosmetic flaws and previous owner modifications that will take time and money to undo. Broken corner mirror trims, peeling vinyl, worn seats, it goes on. Respectfully, only someone interested in restoring this car to its original appearance should touch it.

It has about a day to go, I’m going to guess mid-30s max on this unless someone wants to burn money tomorrow. All sorted out, I’d say 60-75k.

that's a 4sp. The selector doesn't have the click Over for the 5 and I can see the trans does not have the big ol OD unit on the back end of it.

Also, you can see someone cracked the fuel lines open on the fuel distro and rust came out..it's quite stained. That fuel system needs Love, I'm certain it doesn't run the way it should/could.

Shame, neat wagon for the most part, but between cosmetics and mechanicals I'm sure it would absorb another 30 grand real quick.

let’s just say there were numerous undisclosed issues that, I, a non-mechanic was easily able to find, let alone what the ppi revealed (rear main seal, some other leaks, improperly tightened suspension components etc.) somebody had spent money restoring the car in certain ways but the quality of work was questionable. they seemed to want ‘what the other one on bringatrailer went for’, but that car was in much better condition. the photos, as presented here, do not reveal numerous paint defects, wear/tear etc.​

these dudes wanted to do a quick flip but I’m not a sucker. I wanted a car that was truly ready to go and was well documented in terms of repairs and vehicle history. this was neither, and I didn’t appreciate one of the guys’ attitude toward my honest feedback on the state of the car. exceedingly happy I didn’t win the auction.​
