I love the looks of this car - two door coupe (never see this body style on road anymore --- now that "personal luxury" coupes a la Cutlass Supreme are gone), color coded wheel centers (last I remember this was finally the domain of the Pontiac Bonneville SSE), impossible-to-maintain-WHITE-stitching on the blue leather seats....

Anyways, I wonder what a CIS M119 is like to drive versus an LH M119, displacement differences aside.

I love the looks of this car …impossible-to-maintain-WHITE-stitching on the blue leather seats....
But not nearly as impossible (I know, there are no degrees of impossibility) to maintain as the parchment MBUSA seat belts… thankfully it seems all .036 came with Black seatbelts, no matter what color the interior. Those parchment ones have kept me off of beige interior Benzes forever.

LOL Update:
  • Please note that the model name of this car has been updated to be include 'Hammer.' While there is a debate over if the name applies to M117 or M119-powered cars, this is an authentic 6.0-liter four-valve dual overhead cam V8 conversion completed by AMG.
Is there really a debate? Are they trying to associate this car with a Hammer for more attention??

M117 had Melcher designed heads that took AMG lots of time to produce. The M119 was bored to 6.0 the same way but the heads were just breathed on by AMG. I don't think there is a debate.

AMG 45 makes clear this car is not a Hammer. The marketers are getting carried away now.

The Real Hammer for auction attributes way too much "restoration" work to RennTech and Hartmut. This car has been owned by Jono for the last 16 years or so and was totally restored by him. Heck, I even help source/contribute 2 NLA parts to that Hammer to get it ready for sale to the current owner. That car passed through RennTech's shop for a minute or two before the auction to correct a couple items and that's it. That is a legit Hammer with amazing documentation and is a total "no stories" car. Should hit $750k.

The M119 W124 is a nice car and will also do well. As everyone states - it is not a Hammer, but a very close cousin.

While I like the quad cam 117, personally I would prefer a 119 powered "hammer" for the lesser troubles of sourcing parts and/or issues with leaking o-rings between the head upper/lower half's

Speaking of wide body W124 Coupes, would wonder where the manual one would be today in price which was sold bei auto Leiter a couple years ago.

+eleventybillion. The M117 DOHC is more of a museum piece, not something you'd want to drive. The M119 is still reliable to drive daily, and far easier to repair if needed!

:grouphug:

I know where there is/was one of these cars. I am not sure if it is still there but... In the building I lived in from 2011-2014 there was a black version of this car. At the time I had no idea what it was. It never moved! Ever. The owner rarely came to his condo. I never met him. Maybe it's still there!?

Is it this one?

Is the wearecurated/cultivatedcollector blue coupé from the video = the Amelia / former J-Auto Japan?

Can anyone decipher this?

"Please note while it is widely agreed that AMG Hammers were outfitted with 6.0-liter four-valve DOHC V8 engines, it is unknown whether the “Hammer” specification applies uniquely to M119 as well as M117 cars. This car is referred to as a “Hammer” as it is widely considered as such given its 6.0-liter, M119 specification."

My own translation being, "Yes we're aware that this is really not a Hammer, but we're going to call it a Hammer anyway because we've been told it is a six-liter engine."

I see the same semantics treatment with the 1973-1975 BMW 3.0 CSL's----a lot of people just call them "Batmobiles" even when they don't have the actual aero kit. The popular use of the term (in this example, "Batmobile") beyond the key equipment which it originally and correctly is meant to describe has kind of obfuscated the history of the term itself.....I think perhaps the we are witnessing the same thing happening to the M117 DOHC? Not just in this auction description, but it's a good example of the wider trend IMHO.

Who wrote that marketing copy? A politician? 😂😂😂😂

That's what i thought too at first. But now i think these M117 images are refering to and emphasizing the Cocaine Hammer.
Just my wild thoughts, since i don't believe in having two almost identical AMG cars in picture at the same time.

side indicators and interior are different. Also the curated coupe is self-described as a "M117/9". I think they are different cars.
