The Mercedes 500E / E500, part of the W124 series produced from 1984 to 1995, stands out as a distinguished member of the brand’s lineage of Q-cars, harking back the W109 300SEL 6.3. Developed in collaboration with Porsche, the 500E was conceived to provide Mercedes-Benz with a high-performance sedan that could rival sports cars of its time, such as the BMW M-series or the Audi V8.
Under the hood lay a potent 5.0-liter V8 engine delivering 322 horsepower, mated to a sedate, smooth four-speed automatic. This powertrain allowed the 500E to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over six seconds, a remarkable feat for a sedan of its era. AMG, an independent company from Mercedes-Benz at the time, did not hesitate to provide even more exuberant models, boasting special exhaust, body kits, interior upgrades, and larger displacements —6.0L being the most popular.
Beyond its performance, the 500E featured sophisticated engineering and design. Its wider track and flared wheel arches accommodated its sportier stance while maintaining Bruno Sacco’s clean, angular design language. The interior oozed quality and restraint in classic Teutonic fashion, featuring advanced amenities uncommon for its time, and still luxurious by today’s standards. Production involved meticulous hand-built assembly at Porsche’s facility in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, a luxury that cost Mercedes-Benz a loss on every car sold.
This particular car was sold new on February 1993 in Yokohama, Japan, to its first owner. In nearly 30 years in the country, the car changed private hands six more times —passing through Yanase Mercedes as part of their stock at some point— until our acquisition in 2021. Under our ownership, we have performed comprehensive mechanical work for full usability — including a full engine rebuild due to failing timing chain rails —, and test-driven the car for 1,000 kilometres for a proper break-in. Still to this day, it remains the best 500E we have ever used. The car comes with English manuals, ownership records, service records, first aid kit, warning triangle, and spare keys.

35kmi engine needed a "full rebuild" due to failing chain rails? I have a feeling the dealer's definition of "full rebuild" is not the same as everyone else's definition.

Looks nice otherwise, at least up top. Japan-spec / LHT headlights. This is a 1992 car, just because it was first sold in 1993 doesn't move it forward in time. Edit: Japan has "model years" like USA, and code 802 in the datacard indicates 1992 model year.

:watchdrama:

Do you all think the mileage is completely legit on this? Or would this be the miles since engine rebuild?

Hard to say without full service / maintenance records, which may or may no be available. Overall condition looks generally good, HOWEVER there are not nearly enough photos to say for sure. For starters, need a close-up picture of the driver seat bolster. And the steering wheel looks like it has more than 50kkm of use.

That engine "rebuild" needs some explanation, as noted above. No M119 engine needs a "rebuild" at 50kkm. Chain rails, yes, but replacing chain rails IS NOT A REBUILD.

Many, many questions on this particular car...

Yes sorry, misinterpreted the description completely (I meant to say chain rails) , I skimmed over it briefly, closed the tab and went to write the post...

I too would like to know a bit more about the car tbh, does look very straight and clean, but don't know what exactly to make of it, especially given the price, which as I mentioned above, seems too cheap for a 50k KM car...

Went to visit the car today (July 29th), it is nice and may be one of the 'cheapest' cars they have. It was sitting next to a Mechatronik SL  and a 458 Speciale, with a Carrera GT further back.

A few points on this car, based on questions that have been asked:

1. The engine is a comprehensive rebuild, top and bottom end (bearings, rings, etc), not just head job, as I suspected. They noticed some scoring in the main bearings and decided to do it 'while at it'.

2. Confirmed: car is a 1992 build, but sold new in 1993.

3. The original Sportline wheel comes with the car, but it was modified in Japan with wood inserts. Current is a nice replacement.

4. No service history of its time in Japan.

5. Repainted (it's nice, but paint is not original).

6. Black alcantara headliner (?)

Attached a couple photos from today's visit!
