1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 153kmi, $13,500 (Miami, FL)

No affiliation... spotted this morning on eBay.

VIN = WDBEA36E9NB695175

http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/ctd/4810871896.html

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111552225221 <-- Auction ended Dec-24, 2014. High bid $5,168, reserve not met.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/111569010865 <-- Listing ends Jan-28, 2015. BIN = $17,900 / OBO. Thread title updated.

East Coast Classics is proud to offer this rare 1992 Mercedes Benz 500E. [/FONT]Black on Gray. 153K miles. Car has been lowered for a more aggressive stance, and is sitting on later style 18” AMG wheels wrapped in 225/40ZR18’s up front and 245/40ZR18’s in the back. Runs and drives great. Upgraded steering wheel. This car has a rebuilt title due to it having been stolen. The VIN on the Ebay description is the one on the front of the car, the reassigned VIN number is NY69671. Ebay does not let me use that VIN as it does not have 17 digits, and that's why I placed the cars original VIN in the description. Interior is in great shape except for a rip in the driver seat bolster, and has Coco Mats. Engine bay is clean and car is free of any oil leaks. A/C Compressor was just changed, as was the dryer, and the evaporator. Needless to say, A/C is ice cold! This car gets looks, and a thumbs up everywhere it goes. Anyone can lease a new Mercedes, but only a select few can drive one of their rarest cars from the 90’s, that was as awesome a ride then, as it is today. These rare models, which were co-manufactured by Porsche, sell for $30K and up in this condition. Great opportunity for someone to get into a rare classic, at a great price. Reserve is set to sell. We are a licensed dealer in the state of Florida, and residents must pay sales tax. A $195 processing fee will be added to the final sale price. All prices are plus tax, tag, and title. Please have your financing in place, or cash on hand, as we do not offer financing of any type. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
Please call Ralph, toll free from anywhere in the U.S. at 1-844-229-2970.

=====================
GVZ commentary:

My database shows record of this car dating back from September, 2007. At that time, the car had 107,011 miles on the odometer, and was located in Miami, FL. The car was listed at that time as having a salvage title.

An update to the car's database entry was listed on May 3, 2008.

The more recent entry shows the name of the seller as "Elvis," which certainly inspires one heck of a lot of confidence in me......

Here are my comments on this car:

UPDATE 9-3-07: On eBay, in Miami, mileage 107011, SALVAGE TITLE. UPDATE 5/3/08: On eBay again, location Miami, 109K miles, seller is "mbauto129". BIN $8,800. Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 153K (Miami, FL)

Gerry, this is the one I spoke of yesterday at the yard....

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 153K (Miami, FL)

Does it look repainted/sprayed?

Hard to say based on the pictures but I would guess yes. Probably when it had the facelift done.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 153K (Miami, FL)

I think it has the incorrect headlights.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 153kmi, eBay (Miami, FL)

Greg, you are correct, those are standard 124 headlights. The facelift makes you wonder if it was related to the salvage title... seller claims it was a theft recovery, but I don't know if there's any way to prove that was the reason for the salvage title? From the photos:

  • Wrong headlights
  • Almost a complete facelift (hood, trunk lid, front & rear turn signals... but no headlight wipers)
  • Non-factory power antenna, mismatched grommet
  • Passenger door mirror boot looks new (?), driver side appears original
  • No decals on radiator support, punched metal tag is not body color... warning flag #1 of front-end impact
  • Passenger airbag not original, dashboard bent indicates airbag deployment... warning flag #2 of front-end impact

Kudos to the seller for posting lots of photos including close-ups of some questionable areas. My guess is this dealer acquired it via dealer auction and does not have details on the prior history.

AutoCheck attached.

This was actually my old car and I owned for about 3 years after having purchased it from Andre.

I had to repaint it since a very well known automotive transporter delivered it to me with 1,000+ scratches not previously present. They refused the claim, so I then painted it on my own, drafted a lawsuit with the paint invoice, and 10 days later, the 'adjuster' was fired and I had a check for the full reimbursement in my hands. However, the whole ordeal lasted a good 2-3 months. At that point, I personally had the wipers removed because they were not symmetrical in that they pointed downwards, and felt the car looked cleaner without them. Besides, I could not think of an occasion where I would need headlight washers.

I quite liked the car but, at the time, I was doing really well professionally and opted to go for something more modern. Six years after having sold it, I still often think about the car and wonder if a member owns it or what happened to it? I sank a pretty penny into the car and was upset when the buyer, a friend of mine who subsequently bought my 911 turbo and then my e28 Alpina B9 3.5, lost all the paperwork.

If anyone knows where the car ended up at, it would be cool to know.

Call the dealer - flipper shown in post #13, maybe they will tell you, but it was over 2 years ago.... looks like it never sold on eBay

Hard to say what happened unless someone can pull a CarFax / AutoCheck and see if a new title was issued at some point after it was last posted for sale. If a dealer last had the car, it's probably long gone.

:strawberry:

He just called back, the car was sold to another dealer which sold it to his buddy, after which his buddy sold it to private buyer, no way of tracking the car…

I’m in the market for a mechanically sound 500E just for myself to daily it. Budget up to 20k

I have good memories of that car… spent quite a bit on it too. It never reached its true potential and I had a number of other projects going on that required my time.

That’s why in April of last year, I purchased another e500e from a board member also - - this time, from Albert. I will start an owner thread soon as it’s going to be radically different and have been hoarding parts and mods since before buying it. Stay tuned!

Now showing on Ebay for $19.8K OBO.

"Selling my 1992 Wide-Body Mercedes-Benz 500E w124.
If you are looking to purchase one of these very special 500's known as "The Hammer" then you already know the history behind it and why it is so special and carries such pedigree. But just in case you don't, here it is: This model was famous for its aggressive stance and its widened arches...this car was built before AMG was AMG, therefore they did not have the platform to support the production line needed to build such wide car. So Mercedes Sent this chassis to Porsche. Yes, you read that right. This car was hand built at the Porsche factory. It was there that the suspension, body and many other things were developed.

Some specifics on this particular car. it was branded rebuilt in the State of NY, so it has a branded title.
It needs some love esthetically, but lots of money was spent in making it mechanically 100% sound.
I have a folder with TONS of invoices of services, records, and parts that were replaced.
The interior shows some flaws, I can provide specific pictures of the defects by request.
Driver seat bolster is cracked and missing some padding, some buttons on the center console dont work, and there is a fairly sized buble on the roof by the sunroof.
Cheapest 500e for sale in the whole county.
I can assist with shipping/transport if needed as buyers expense.
Feel free to call or text if you want more information or have any specific questions (305) 469-8304.
Cheers! "

Claimed 152kmi doesn't match the 157k in the photos.

No title OR registration events since 2009? What's the deal?

The "replacement VIN" is NY69671 as mentioned in post #13 above, but there are no AutoCheck/CarFax records for the funky replacement VIN. No results for Florida plate PL551R either. Dealer plate perhaps? Odd.

That may be one of the lowest ride heights I've seen on an 036. I'm curious what suspension is in there... guessing SLS is long gone.

I think the car looks really, really good! Very tasteful wheels and color change from when I had it... It still has the same front euro license plate from when I installed it around 2010-11 as well as the pedal kit, shifter, shifter surround, plus AndreNY's steering wheel and lowered suspension. Great to see its still around as it stayed in Miami from when I sold it to a buddy in the Porsche trade. I am certain this car still has many more years of enjoyment under the right ownership to correct the interior flaws!

I cannot recall the last time I came across a car I used to own after years of not seeing it - the car still has quite the presence and hope it ends in a good home :)

Recently been talking with the seller and might end up with it. It does have a number of items to be addressed.
Cool! Make sure you're prepared for a >$10k investment after purchase for the deferred maintenance, and/or returning some of the mods to stock.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Thanks, my main concern being a florida car. Last time I picked up a basket case project from florida it had more rust than I really wanted to deal with. Decided to register recently, but been lurking for a while as a lot of great information here.

Doesn't look terrible, but it's been de-catted... hope you don't have emission testing in TX. That front exhaust work is amateurish and would cost a tidy sum to fix properly. Without smog checks you can leave it as-is.

:wormhole:

I sold the car after pouring tons into it - but the timing wasn’t right as I had 4 other cars with needs as well. PM as the history has it staying in Miami for the past 13 years during/after my ownership. Did the Silver Arrows front brakes, for example, that I purchased from GSXR in 2013 and came with the car - ever get installed?

Was actually debating on sending you a pm. I am not certain on the brakes, but was hoping they made it in. Car was on temp dealer tags for last 10 years. Plan is to find out hopefully by end of next week.

When I bought my most recent 500e two years ago this month, it was heavily documented in this forum (and in BAT) with 1,000’s of hours spent on it, and more in parts! I likely have more than twice as much as the not low purchase price already spent and more accumulating by the month - some of it, of course, completely subjectively. However, no one in their right mind buys an older, expensive at the time, European car with high(er) miles and below market entry price point so that they can either make money when they sell it, or avoid having to dedicate substantive resources. At least, that’s been my experience since the age of 20 when I bought a pristine 8 year old Maserati Biturbo as my 3rd car ever, only to replace it with an older, more expensive then 15 year old Alpina B7 Turbo some 3 years later.

One buys these magnificent, cool + older cars because when they’re working properly and are clean, they make ya feel great!

The only pic I took of my dilapidated 400i the day it arrived from the delivery trailer, was a sad one from the rear which showed the least amount of the car. You’ll be okay as long as you have a competent, honest and good mechanic (shop). Best of luck to ya and remember, Rome wasn’t built in 1 day/week/month/year.
