Hi everyone. I've just joined this forum and have already noticed how organized the layout is and how knowledgeable most of the members are. I'm planning on purchasing an M119 soon. While searching the local craigslist, I stumbled upon this guy. I spoke with the owner and he seems to be a good guy. He's also a member on 500eboard. My concerns are the overhauled motor and salvaged title. I plan on meeting with him in a few hours. Anything I should be cautious about with the car? Thanks for the help in advance.
"I have a 1992 Mercedes Benz 500E for sale. It is in excellent condition, runs and drives smoothly. This vehicle is absolutely clean just how it is in the pictures except a little tear on the bottom of the front bumper. Everything works on this vehicle. The Vehicle has only 137k miles. The reason the price is this low is because it has a California Salvage Title. The Salvage Title was due to an engine overhaul. The car has never been in an accident. These were the services that I did (New Water Pump, New Thermostat, Has an updated Engine Wiring harness & Starter Wiring Harness, New Coolant Tank, New Spark Plugs, New Valve Cover Gaskets & all the seals and gaskets around the engine, New Belt Tensioner, New Engine Oil Level Sensor and Much More...)

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 137kmi, $8800, Sacramento

Why would an engine "overhaul" create a salvage title? Does "overhaul" equate to rebuild? Does anyone know this car?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 137kmi, $8800, Sacramento

I remember this car being posted previously, but I can't find the thread. It was mentioned that an engine failure could be the cause of a salvage title, although this would be rather unusual. Not a bad deal, although that bumper will need repair... hopefully it can be fixed, as replacements are $$$.

Side note: The rear end is sitting WAY too high. Most likely the SLS system is misadjusted or has a problem, and is creating the 'stinkbug stance'.

My initial thought too! From a far it seemed fine but last close up picture shows way too high.

I think this would happen only if the owner claimed engine failure from his insurance and the cost to repair exceeded the threshold value of the car. But, I'm not sure auto insurance covers engine failure except for warranty insurance. And if it was covered by warranty, engine overhaul/replacement wouldn't result in salvage title.

I'm curious to know the real story.

Anyone have a VIN number on this car...?

:apl:

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 137kmi, $8800, Sacramento

I suppose this situation could arise due to theft and destruction of the engine although it seems the salvage title would be issued "due to theft"

I actually know the guy, he told me that he picked it up from an insurence auction yard, they said the car had water damage to the engine and the radiator was broken, but when he got it he said the radiator was cracked and looked like someone overheated it, so he took an engine out of a 92 500e with 114kmi and before throwing it in changed everything around the engine so he wouldnt have to deal with it later, hes a young guy and hes going back to college cant afford the car anymore, he got the car with the cracked bumper, also he said when he put the 18's he noticed the rear end went up a little, what could that be?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 137kmi, $8800, Sacramento

I bet the turnbuckle for the SLS rod attached to the sway bar is busted, or has come off. A cheap and easy fix...

Water damage to the engine?...did the PO U-boat it in a lake or something? Too bad but nice to see it was 'fixed' up instead of crushed or parted.

I think the price is a bit high considering all that...but maybe not to the right person. Not a bad asking price if it's clean and repaired well.

Ill let him know, i dont even know why they would put water damage.
Ive seen the car in person and it is repaired well and everything is neat around the engine,
also he is asking less then what he actually spent on it, but it is a decent 500e, i would say better then some clear title 500e's.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 137kmi, $8800, Sacramento

I'm a P&C insurance agent. From my experience, standard auto insurance would not cover a blown or overheated motor...maybe an "extended warranty" type policy would. Now a flood, or water indunated situation very well could result in a "total loss" and salvage title.

Re: 1992 MERCEDES BENZ 500E - SUPER RARE - $12000 (Marysville)

The shades on the back windows are pretty cool.

Car sounds nice enough. Paintwork ? I got a good front bumper cover for it !

:detective: Indeed, let the speculation begin! Didn't we somewhat recently hear this phrase before? Is there a new definition for the word overhaul? Engines get overhauled all the time without necessitating a title change. The results of a cataclysmic engine failure (submitted for insurance) requiring a replacement engine + labor may be a plausible reason.

VIN is the key to unlock this mystery.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 145kmi, $12,000 (Marysville, WA)

Well, perhaps Chip Foose (of "Overhaulin'" TV show fame) got his hands on this 500E and worked his 'magic' on it......

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 145kmi, $12,000 (Marysville, WA)

Wonder if that 500E was once stolen and recovered with a blown motor? I had a rice rocket stolen from me once, and it was recovered with a blown motor...and the insurance fixed it all up....tho its title didn't need to be changed.

I really like Chip Foose's style with the all the old muscle cars he does ...but those rims are terrible on that Gullwing IMO.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Silver/Gray, 145kmi, $12,000 (Marysville, WA)

Boy, this car has really gotten around.

The GVZ database has record of this car from September 17, 2004 when it had 110,000 miles on the odometer. At that time, it was in Lawrenceville, GA and was listed on eBay.

The eBay auction is attached.

My comments at the time about this car, in the notes section of this car's database entry, are: "little info, few photos"

Cheers,
Gerry

And you shall have it. Just wait until I come to London ...

That said: I think these curtains look terrible. It looks home-made and makes the interior look like a funeral car ;(

Gerry,

It reminds me about that Gullwing clone with M119 in Japan IIRC. Hated & Loved, but I like it, but I've lost all references on that car btw.

New photos attached below, new price is $9,200 as of Feb-2013 (originally listed at $12,000 in Jan-2013).

The new photos show the driver's seat leather is in rather poor condition. :(

Benz 1992 500E V8 350hp SuperSedan Classic Rare - $20000 (South River NJ)

Here is your chance to own a rare limited production Mercedes Benz V8 super sedan!
The high-performance variant of the W124 is considered by many to be father of the modern factory production V8 Super Sedan, whose bloodlines live on today in the form of the E63 AMG. Each car took an unheard-of 18 days to complete, hand-built at Porsche (in the same facility that previously built the 959) with special flared bodywork, modified SL suspension, SL brakes, Sport seats, and powered by a naturally-aspirated, all aluminum 5.0L V8 making 322 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque! This is not your average E-series Benz from the 90's. With only 1,528 cars imported between 1991 and late 1994, this 500E is becoming an enthusiasts collector by the day.

Right of the bat, you will notice this vehicle has a rebuilt title. To the best of my knowledge, according to the previous owner, this vehicle was a flood restoration. I have discovered that she was purchased from auction Sep 1, 2011. From that point in time, the motor was "thoroughly" rebuilt (Timing chain, chain guides, valve cover gaskets, plugs, distributor/cap, motor mounts, belts, tensioners, pulleys, hoses, various sealing rings.) Upon driving the car, the quality of the rebuild really shone through.

Although I'm aware this may deter many prospective buyer, you can be assured that the electronics on the car are fully functional and does not compromise the enjoyment and safety of the drive.

UPDATE-10/22/14- Printed Carfax report will be available to prove mileage and history of vehicle!

In my 3 years of ownership, i have had lots of restoration, maintenance, and modifications performed on the vehicle.

7/3/2013--~$600--Air conditioning repair/recharge

7/18/2013--~$2,000--H&R(part no. 29855)/Bilstein Sports Suspension(part no. V36-0365), including related bushing components.

9/23/2013--~$2,000--Complete Alpine audio system, component speakers, dual amps, crossovers, single subwoofer, alpine deck with iPod input/Aux inputs.

10/18/2013--$2,551.28--Comfort control module (part no. 202 820 09 26), wheel bearing/hub assembly(R&I), 5w-40 synthetic oil change, control arm bushing, and parking brake shoes.

3/13/2014--$1,062.52--5w-40 synthetic oil change, Front Cooper Zeon tires, headlight switch.

8/22/2014--$4,782.26--rebuilt transmission (Super Tool Automotive Inc.), rear Cooper tires, 5w-40 synthetic oil change, headlight/fog lights HID repair, comprehensive inspection (belts, hoses, axle boots, exhaust system, undercarriage, alignment(camber, toe, caster adjust)

The motor pulls strong, transmission shifts wonderfully, handling is precise, interior is clean. The paint on the front valance shows age up close (rock chips). Overall, there is relatively low miles for the year ~11,571 miles/year, and sure ill regret selling her, but business priorities take precedence at the moment. Don't miss your chance to own a unique timepiece thats respected and different from the rest!

DO NOT ASK ME FOR AVAILABILITY OR OTHER DETAILS I HAVE ADDRESSED, AT GREAT LENGTHS, IN THIS ADVERTISEMENT. I DO NOT NEED YOUR CONSULTATION OR APPRAISALS, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!

The car is located in central jersey, EXIT 9 off NJ turnpike (approximately 1 hour north of Center city), I'm usually available weekends.

1992 Mercedes -Benz Euro Muscle 500E - $14500 (South River)

Here is your chance to own a rare limited production Mercedes Benz V8 super sedan!
The high-performance variant of the W124 is considered by many to be father of the modern factory production V8 Super Sedan, whose bloodlines live on today in the form of the E63 AMG. Each car took an unheard-of 18 days to complete, hand-built at Poorsche (in the same facility that previously built the 959) with special flared bodywork, modified SL suspension, SL brakes, Sport seats, and powered by a naturally-aspirated, all aluminum 5.0L V8 making 322 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque!

Those roof rails look nice and black. Need more photos!

It has WA plates but it's a NJ posting so I ran a Carfax report on the plate. Salvage title, maybe flood damage. Total loss in 2011 and rebuilt title in 2012. 9 owners. [EDIT: clearly I didn't read the full posting which lists the salvage title].

VIN WDBEA36E3NB775202

Sorry I'm at work so I can't post the carfax report (though I'm not sure anyone really needs to see it after knowing about the info above).

Thanks for the referral to the existing thread. I've combined them. I just KNEW that I remembered this car from somewhere.

One comment about this car -- I think reading through its history that it's "gotten around" and lived in more places than just about any other E500E can recall.....it's had quite a life, particularly so given the flood damage.

For sale in Seattle area in pretty sad condition, now claimed 175kmi, and asking $30k. Thanks @bunty660 for finding this.

It looked pretty good back at 163kmi... not sure what happened since then, or if it's now 275kmi, lol. Broken rear window, broken roller blind, missing both front carpets, and who knows what other surprises there will be. The rear glass was replaced with standard 124 glass, but that was done prior to the photos back in 2012 in post #1. Wasn't as obvious in the older pictures.

Wild guess? Maybe $20k. Probably less. Keep in mind there are documented wrecked cars that have sold for $15-$20k... which I agree is also nuts.

$30k as it sits is just silly.

its sad seeing how good it looked in previous photos from before and how it looks now, one big concern i have looking at it how low it is i am speculating lowering springs or the original springs were cut, either is bad, because there are no 500e springs for sale and its a problem, looks abandoned, i would say somewhere between 10-12k tops, im flying to WA an a few weeks if its still there ill go take a look in person
