Downsizing forces sale. 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E with 118k miles. Gold / Tan. You are looking at a well kept, great looking sporty luxury sedan with low miles. If you are reading this ad, you already know about the 500E. I purchased this beauty from a good friend in 2007 and have put less than 20K miles on it. Both of us have tried to keep the car original, no fancy aftermarket mods have been made. This is the sport version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E, created in close cooperation with Porsche. Mercedes/Porsche built and imported 1505 of these beasts into the USA between 1992 and 1994. (For those that they don't know anything about this model, I suggest looking it up online at: Mercedes-Benz 500 E - Wikipedia )
Most of the miles on the car are highway miles. The engine is very strong and runs smooth. The transmission was professionally rebuilt at 95k miles. Rare Mercedes 6-spoke wheels with Potenza tires. Also have a near nearly new set of winter tires on the original Mercedes wheels which I have never put on. Interior is clean and in excellent condition. Front seats are powered and heated. It did not have the mobile phone option, so you actually get to use the console for storage. The car has never been smoked in as far as I know as neither my friend nor I smoke. The blaupunkt stereo and (trunk mounted) 10 Disc CD player stopped working about 2 years ago and I just could not bring myself to replace it with non-OEM equipment (the CD players were apparently not very reliable, I have 2 of them that do not work now). The body is straight - No accidents, dents, or scratches. Front air dam does have a small cosmetic tear that wast there when I bought it. Clear coat has thinned in a couple spots due to weather, primarily to top of the front fenders. Lots of receipts - over $5000 in recent service records. Registered through May 2013.

Yeah but didn't the phone actually go in the armrest? Of course he has a normal armrest and prolly thinking it went inside the sliding console.

I have record of this car in the database, dating back from May of 2007, when it had 98K miles on it. The car was listed on AutoTrader at that time.

My notes on the car:

Ad on AutoTrader says: "1992 MERCEDES-BENZ 500E, 98K mi, VERY RARE LMT.EDITION Mercedes/Porsche conglomoration.322hp.Super-Sedan. All stock and all maintanence. New everything., $19,500" Car appears to be relatively stock, with burglar alarm (light near headlight switch); EVO II wheels; Washington state license plate (!). Looks clean.

This car has some issues. The PPI in PDF, but was unsuccessful. Not sure why. If anyone wants to review, please feel free. Steve Geyer did the PPI. I highly recommend him.
The seller said someone from Germany is buying it. I was supposed to hear yesterday if the transaction happened. I did not hear. We had agreed at $11.5k with both sets of wheels.
Hope this might help someone. I had a decent shot of the damaged clearcoat on the front fender, but it didn't come through on the small photo after uploading.

The corrosion underneath isn't bad at all, but that bent-up dash freaks me out. Never, ever seen anything like that. Even if it was never in an accident (questionable), at a minimum it will need a new dash... couple hundred bucks for a used one and 5-10 hours labor to R&R. What I'd be worried about is if the replacement dash didn't fit correctly, indicating some other bent items. There's definitely a good story here that we're missing....!

EDIT: The bent dash appears to be similar to what happens when the passenger airbag deploys, as seen in this thread. (???)

The spare tire well received quite an impact too. But probably not enough to affect the dash :D
Steve, the PPI tech, speculated that maybe someone missed one of the mounting studs on the dash and it was forcing the dash up in the middle. He pulled in another tech and they both had never seen similar, either.

The scrape on the spare tire well isn't bad either... probably backed over a concrete curb or something. Just scratched the undercoating a bit, doesn't look like any structural damage. Given the other issues though, I think the price is a little high.

No way in a million years you could live with that dash :banghead:. Can't imagine how it ended up like that. Didn't seller say why??

seller didn't know why the dash was that way. Nice guy, not really a car guy though. Not hands-on at all. Some recent repairs were amateurish according to Steve. The Power steering leak was supposedly solved, but still oil remains.

It's on Autotrader again. Now in Tejas. Front bumper is cracked ahead of passenger wheel area. Check out the photos which show the funky warped dash. Mileage is the same, looks like it was traded in and wholesaled from Redmond...

A little off topic here guys, but can anyone tell me what the rusty pipe in the center of this photo is? I have a similarly (if not worse) rusty pipe on my 94, would really like to replace it, but can't find it in the EPC. I'm pretty sure it is a trans fluid pipe, seems to connect to a flexible fluid line....

Any ideas?

1992 Mercedes Benz 500E

The sportsman in a suit - Mercedes 500E

In the early 1990’s if you were rich, wanted to go very fast and wanted 4 seats there weren’t many options. When it arrived, the 500E caused quite a stir. A massive V8, 4 speed automatic gear box and a stunning wide body that is subtle enough so that only people who know what it is look at it.

In 1992 the 500E was the fastest production sedan in the world, with 150 mph top speed, and 0 – 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. This was the Mercedes muscle car.

The high-performance variant of the W124 is considered by many to be father of the modern factory production V8 Super Sedan, whose bloodlines live on today in the form of the E63 AMG. Each car took an unheard-of 18 days to complete, hand-built at Porsche (in the same facility that previously built the 959) with special flared bodywork, modified SL suspension, SL brakes, Recaro seats, and powered by a naturally-aspirated, all aluminum 5.0L V8 making 322 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

This Smoke Silver 500E is an extremely well-kept example true to original form. In and out it is clean as a whistle. No after market modifications have been made allowing for a true experience as it was intended. Included with this 500E are complete original owners handbooks and leather folio, thorough and impressive service records and receipts totaling over $35,000. Great care went into sourcing original and appropriate parts along the way to keep this vehicle unaltered. The engine is very strong and runs extra smooth. The transmission was professionally rebuilt in house at MB in Germany at 95K miles. The majority of the miles came from its life as a ballistic missile on west coast highways. I'm the first owner to bring it to the northeast, where it currently rests in a lush heated garage awaiting beautiful sunny days and clear roads. All of the cornerstone maintenance is well detailed in the included treasure chest of documentation along with receipts.

The body is in excellent condition - No accidents, no dents, no rust with only minor nicks and scratches. Front air dam does have a small cosmetic tear that was there when I bought it. Clear coat has thinned in a couple spots due to weather, primarily on top of the front fenders. It's imperfections allow for a completely immersive driving experience without having to worry about putting that horrific very first scratch on a brand new machine or fully restored classic. This machine is meant to be driven, fast. It's not meant to sit in a garage collecting dust. That being said it’s not far from perfect. The original Mercedes wheels are crisp. No curb rash and damage free. Doors open and close as they should. The chrome trim is beautiful, the rubber components and seals are like new.

Sit down in the premium leather wrapped 19 way, powered Recaro seats and you'll feel as though you entered a brand new car. The interior is immaculate. This car has never been smoked in. The leather and carpeting is so clean you'll wonder how the vehicle acquired its milage. The Blaupunkt stereo never worked while I've owned the car and I just couldn't bring myself to replace it with non-OEM equipment. Can't say I ever missed it though. The sound coming from the engine bay is entertaining enough for me. The classic Mercedes Dash board is free of cracks, the center console wood is in very good condition as well. AC blows cold and working perfectly.

The Legendary, successful and famous engine (MB-Code M119) used for over 10 years in different models is working with no issues. All the power is there as you would expect from 5.0 V8. There are no expenses spared in order to keep this engine healthy. The most recent service includes a new battery, new ignition coils, new alternator, complete tune up, new oil pump, CO2 sensor, new belts, wires and hoses, cooling system service, among others. Consult the summary of service sheet for more detail.

The genuine, untampered nature of this particular machine increases not only it's rarity, but future collectability and value. As time passes these models will only be more sought after.

Steering wheel was restored with the non MB pattern leather .

Some dirt (oil) around water pump in the front plate of the engine .

Sounds like little overpriced for US market

I have record of this car in my database, going back to May, 2007. At that time, the car was offered for sale on AutoTrader.com, located in Oakland, CA and had 98K miles on the odometer.

Here are my detailed notes from the database, on this car:

Ad on AutoTrader says: "1992 MERCEDES-BENZ 500E, 98K mi, VERY RARE LMT.EDITION Mercedes/Porsche conglomoration.322hp.Super-Sedan. All stock and all maintanence. New everything., $19,500" Car appears to be relatively stock, with burglar alarm (light near headlight switch); EVO II wheels; Washington state license plate (!). Looks clean.

UPDATE 11-22-2012: Car listed for sale on AutoTrader again, asking $12,500. Seems to be same condition, same accessories with no changes. For sale in Redmond, WA. Also discussed on 500Eboard.com. Seller ad on AutoTrader says, "Downsizing forces sale. 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E with 118k miles. Gold / Tan. You are looking at a well kept, great looking sporty luxury sedan with low miles. If you are reading this ad, you already know about the 500E. I purchased this beauty from a good friend in 2007 and have put less than 20K miles on it. Both of us have tried to keep the car original, no fancy aftermarket mods have been made. This is the sport version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E, created in close cooperation with Porsche. Mercedes/Porsche built and imported 1505 of these beasts into the USA between 1992 and 1994. (For those that they don't know anything about this model, I suggest looking it up online at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_500E.) Most of the miles on the car are highway miles. The engine is very strong and runs smooth. The transmission was professionally rebuilt at 95k miles. Rare Mercedes 6-spoke wheels with Potenza tires. Also have a near nearly new set of winter tires on the original Mercedes wheels which I have never put on. Interior is clean and in excellent condition. Front seats are powered and heated. It did not have the mobile phone option, so you actually get to use the console for storage. The car has never been smoked in as far as I know as neither my friend nor I smoke. The blaupunkt stereo and (trunk mounted) 10 Disc CD player stopped working about 2 years ago and I just could not bring myself to replace it with non-OEM equipment (the CD players were apparently not very reliable, I have 2 of them that do not work now). The body is straight - No accidents, dents, or scratches. Front air dam does have a small cosmetic tear that wast there when I bought it. Clear coat has thinned in a couple spots due to weather, primarily to top of the front fenders. Lots of receipts - over $5000 in recent service records. Registered through May 2013."

Yes. See the old posts in this thread. Doug had a PPI done on this car in Nov-2012. The dash misfit is severe. No idea what happened there, but it's unacceptable on a $26k car in the current market. Just my $0.02...

Oh, the seller at that time claimed a buyer in Germany was going to take the car sight unseen for $11k. Apparently that didn't happen since it's still for sale in USA.

Seller is smoking something very powerful if they're trying to double the price to $26K for this car. This is a mid-teens car at best given the needs. Unless, of course, the seller has paperwork that shows improvements made since it was a $12K car, that warrant the more than doubled price.

By the mid-1980s Mercedes-Benz had lost ground in the performance sedan arms race to both the AMG “Hammer” and the BMW M5. The legendary Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 and 450 SEL 6.9 sedans that defined the category for over a decade felt like a distant memory. To regain the upper hand, Mercedes turned to fellow Stuttgart automaker Porsche for their engineering and performance expertise when laying out plans for a V8-powered super sedan based on the W124 E-Class. Revealed at the 1990 Paris Motor Show, the 500 E featured over 1,100 bespoke components to match the M5 in performance while offering superior comfort. The production process was highly complex, with cars being hand-assembled between Porsche's Rössle Bau and Mercedes' Sindelfingen plants, taking 18 days to complete each vehicle.

Representing less than three percent of 500 E production, this Smoke Silver Metallic example is one of just 270 produced in color code 702. The Beige leather (275) interior adds to the exclusivity, as nearly 62-percent of these special cars came with a Black leather interior. [Yeahbut... 194 of the 270 had cream interior! Talk about twisting the numbers. -Ed.] As a North American model, the car came equipped with virtually every option available when new, from heated Recaro-designed front and rear seats to automatic climate control and a power rear sunshade. [Sure, every option except passenger memory seat... stationary heating... fire extinguisher... engine oil cooler... trip computer... selectable E/S shift program... tunk triangle... probably a couple others I'm forgetting. -Ed.]

For the past 11 years, this 500 E has resided with a single owner, featuring regular maintenance along with the installation of desirable enhancements carried out by marque specialists Precision Autoworks of Camden, New Jersey. The car is fitted with a full header back Leistung Autohaus stainless system with a Timevalve center muffler section. [Which is it? Leistung or Timevalve? The full Leistung exhaust uses a Leistung Y-pipe, not Timevalve.] In the rear, it retains factory-style tips to maintain an understated appearance.

A comprehensive service was completed in preparation for sale, which included an engine oil change, transmission fluid change, differential service, brake fluid flush, fitting new engine drive belt, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on refinished AMG Monoblock II wheels. The body cladding, bumpers, and rockers were refinished and ceramic coated and are protected by paint protection film in front. Additional recent services in January include replacing distributor caps and rotors, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, in addition to the fuel pump relays. In total, over $15,000 has been spent through 2024 to ensure this is one of the finest 500 Es currently on offer.

Looks sharp overall. Nice to see correct lug bolts with the monoblocks, and fresh (NLA) headlight "doors".

The wrong ZoomTubes® hurt my eyes though. And the driver seat should have been deep-cleaned or refinished prior to listing. Headliner is sagging. Odd the steering wheel needed to be re-wrapped at only 140kmi.
