Welcome to the Cult Car Hall!
-OWN VEHICLE FOR SALE!-
The 124 series, produced since 1984, is no longer an insider tip and has already become a fixture in the classic car scene. The timeless design, penned by the great Bruno Sacco, and the robust technology make this Mercedes-Benz a classic suitable for everyday use. The sedans with the M119 V8 engine, prized by connoisseurs, hold a special position. With a subtle yet sonorous rumble, this W124 achieves the impressive acceleration figures of a thoroughbred sports car of its era. Combined with its unique history, the 500E has become a true Mercedes-Benz icon over the years.
As early as the 1980s, AMG implemented the M117 V8 engine in the 124 series, and the company continually tweaked the performance parameters. Thus, in 1986, the brute interpretation of a sports sedan bearing the Mercedes star, producing 385 hp, was born in Affalterbach: the AMG 300E 6.0, dubbed "The Hammer" by the euphoric US press. The positive press response and market success of the BMW M5 E34, available since 1988, fueled the realization of the first official V8 mid-size Mercedes.
Starting in 1989, with the introduction of the 500SL (R129), a suitable powerplant was available in the form of the modern M119 aluminum V8 with four-valve technology. However, the necessary modifications and reinforcements to the body to create space in the engine compartment, as well as numerous modifications to accommodate the vehicle's performance, were not insignificant. Moreover, the 500E, which was 5.6 centimeters wider, no longer fit on the production line in Sindelfingen. Through the mediation of Minister-President Lothar Späth, Porsche, a financially struggling neighbor in Zuffenhausen, was awarded the production contract. In the highly complex production process, parts and vehicles were transported back and forth between Sindelfingen and Zuffenhausen repeatedly—a nightmare for any business economist. Thus, between 1990 and 1995, a total of 10,479 very expensive but incredibly fascinating vehicles were produced.
The 1992 500E offered here, featuring elegant mother-of-pearl gray metallic paint and comfortable black leather sports seats, was produced for the Japanese market and re-imported to Germany in 2015. Despite a mileage of just under 186,000 km, this very well-equipped sedan is in excellent condition. The M119 E50 V8 engine develops its 326 hp and 480 Nm of torque as powerfully as on the first day. The 4-speed automatic transmission operates completely smoothly and shifts gears with silky smoothness. New original headlights and the rare 17-inch EVO aluminum rims in excellent condition underscore the remarkable appearance of this sports sedan. Inside, the headliner has already been replaced, and the elegant burl wood decor has been restored to its original factory condition. The fragile engine wiring harness has also been replaced. The maintenance history is fully traceable, and every service receipt is available. The new owner can look forward to a magnificent example of German automotive history, which combines power and luxury in a unique way.

+ Neither am I affiliated +

But.. I have written a message to the seller, and maybe we'll get lucky about the inquiry as to have the VIN of his 500E from Japan.

It's been for sale on their Instagram account (which I happen to follow) since May 2025!

Last yearI visited their stand at Retro-Classic booth in Stuttgart, and an SL60 with (EDIT-pardon me: actually 2nd facelift in "Aquamarine Blue" - there was a "Mineralgreen metallic" SL320 too, I messed them up!) they showed ther really impressed me - but apart from price tag being some bulky € 160k-180k (IICR right) and one member of their staff praising its purchase as an investment for the future..

Keep fingers crossed..!

@kultwagenhalle

===== translation of the text on the pic =====

"
Good evening to the team of the Kultwagenhalle,

I noticed the advertisement of the 500E from Japan via a link to the mobile.de website, as this link was discovered and shared on a very well-known and international platform (500eboard.com) a few days ago by another member.

If you would be so kind and could give me the VIN of your beautiful car (or e.g. send a picture of the data card), some potential buyers would be happy, as this can give the mentioned pursuers of the model 124036 information about the history of the car.

With best regards from Stuttgart

Alberto"

I visited Retro-Classic in Stuttgart in 2025 and for sure Kultwagenhalle stand was the most impressive one.

I’m not an expert and can’t comment on the quality of their cars, but one thing’s for sure – they’ve injected some fresh blood into the Mercedes Youngtimer Sales scene in Germany, which is still dominated either by overly authoritative “dealers” or by rather shady characters.
To me, they’re something like a 1:43-scale version of Curated – with a solid online presentation and first-class presence at exhibitions.

Both R129s are still for sale, however the current listed prices aren’t completely detached from reality:
99k euro for SL60 Aquamarinblaumetallic
and
47.5k for the SL320 Designo Grün (R6, not V6)

*That said, a few years ago, when their lineup consisted of cars in the 15–20k range, sales seemed to happen much more frequently.
Now the cars tend to sit for many months — but eventually, they still find a buyer.

The good thing about this 500E is that the boss of Kultwagenhalle has driven it at least a few hundred kilometres, if not thousands — so it shouldn’t feel like a Japanese princess abandoned for ages.

@FD. Thank you so much for doing the research and helping/correcting me with the figures about current prices for both R129s.
You are right, first at colour designation for the SL320 (I forgot this one had an exclusive 'designo' paint and interior indeed)

...secondly when describing Kultwagenhalle's actual contribution, and also your good sight on how their company is making the MB Young-/Oldtimer Scene to get fresher and 'shaken'.

At the same time, I enjoy viewing their various ads and IG-posts with some gorgeous cars in actually very good shape.
Nowadays when a quality work is correctly done, this facts leads its price to be above average - while saying this, it does help build up trust on customers.

VIN = ???
Narrowed it down to 15 VINs but that's as about as close as we'll get as the datacards are identical except for engine/trans serial numbers and order no.

I think this one specific VIN from your thoroughly searched shortlist may not be a candidate for the one on sale at 'Kultwagenhalle'

Strangely no result popped up when staring the query on the Board site - I had to then write 'vin:WDB1240361B849597' in order to find it, as owner (in Dubai those days, maybe the car is still at the same location and did not reach Germany yet !?) typed it in such manner...

Ps. Seller has not replied to my inquiry on Instagram yet, so let's hope they accomplish that some time..
