We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. I like the no sunroof option, but not happy about no A/C & manual steering?? Didn't know that power steering was an option, thought it was standard equipment. Must be awful with no PS.
Steve, I was being sarcastic. Sunroof delete was an option, but PS and AC was standard on every 124.036 (and 124.034) produced. MB Classic didn't check their work before hitting "publish" to the website...

Ok , Dave, I knew sunroof delete was possible. I bought a W124 Kombi turbo diesel in Germany in the late 80's, and everything was a option. You could buy them with cloth interior/ manual seats/ manual windup windows/ no tint on the glass/ aircon/ etc. I think a third of the price was "options" I even ordered "standheizung" which turned out to be a waste of time in Europe. The car was fantastic, we towed my racecar all over Europe with it for years.

Japanese spec. Exaust temp. light and no vin plaque under the bonnet. I didn´t take a liberty to check those headlamp lenses. Are they RHT or not?
Seasalt on speedo??
Otherwise i do have some points to believe those 68kkm... Drivers seat still has some form, is not flat, steering wheel looks fresh etc. But they might polisch it too thin, i don´t see any "cellulitis" on it´s paint, maybe it was oversprayed...

Headlight lenses are correct 036 RHT. Hopefully the reflectors match.

DDD on cluster. Missing E/S switch confirms Japan spec, which also means no oil cooler, small rear brakes, and that it doesn't have the fancy "dual mode" braking system found on Euro-spec late 036's (after March 1993).

And, this misrouted hose doesn't inspire confidence. Wonder what the "EGS" box is behind the driver headlight.

MBCC should have done a better job on detailing the engine compartment it looks very dusty to me. The airbox could use some 303 at least on it for sure.

Question: What is the grey item in the spare tire? (pic #37) I don’t believe I have it on my car. I will check later today.

Terry, that's a spare fuel canister. It holds a couple of gallons or so. This was an accessory option not offered in North America.

No Fin/Vin and no price.
Well, I've been there today - I could picture driver's door jamb sticker with the car's VIN.
Wasn't allowed to get a pic of equipment plaquette though...

VIN = WDB1240361C107321

(My headnote states: E500 aus Japan - 199/271 mit “EGS-3” KLR/Kat für E2-Schadstoffklasse?)

This week the regular sales staff at MBCC are attending Paris' Auto Salon, so they will write an e-mail back to me by next week when they're back in Fellbach.

Dave, I caught this too - that EGS piece of hardware is essentially a WLR (warm-up-regulator) added to make emission levels during cold phase lower - and to get taxes on the car halved (until it gets 30 years old and worthy for 'H' license plate, as a historical vehicle - then it's just € 192 a year for any type of car).

I think it works with altered false data for coolant temperature and engine speed, somehow to achieve the mixture and idle being more prone to get catalytic converter to functional temperature sooner.

As I could imagine, before 2024 this car was taxed as 'E2-Schadstoffarm' (for low pollutant - but adding more measures compared to simple factory cats result, which originally gave the E500E only 'E1' classification.

Fascinating. I didn't realize this was a thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the EGS hardware does basically nothing. There isn't much that can be done to "fool" the LH-SFI system to reduce emissions during warmup phase after a cold start. The factory stuff (air pump, etc) is doing most of what is possible. I guess EGS could be trying to tell the computers that it is warming up faster than reality, to shorten the time the mixture is richer, but I'd expect this would cause poor running. Very weird. I wonder if any forum members have this EGS box on their W124's.

:klink:

I had one, but I removed it from my ex German car a few years ago because it is irrelevant in my country.

The EGS connections were simple (I'm writing from memory). It had one signal wire, lambda voltage directly from the sensor, in parallel with the original engine control. The device controlled the opening/closing of the breather pipe on top of the valve cover to the outside air with an on/off solenoid. I never measured when and how it worked.

The device should have some real effect, because the installation report is accompanied by a new smoke test report and stamped by the authorities. I really don't know how manipulating the breather affects emissions, unless it also modifies lambda voltage.

I wasn't completely well informed about the way that EGS works, sorry if my previous comment was misleading..

Secondary air pump has indeed that purpose too. After having read a bit more on the way EGS (and in different manner the 'GAT' devices - from another manufacturer of similar WUR/KLR aid systems'), it's become a bit clearer to me which effects each is meant to achieve.. (follows below »»)

Thank you for detailing more of your experience with the system that was added (and later removed) onto your car's engine while driving in Germany.

It truly seems to have that one wire from the O2 sensor in parallel to ECU, and depending on what injection (mainly for intake air pressure control - if system uses a MAP, or doesn't) - as well as presence of ICV (air-idle-valve) à la ZLS, on the K/KAs and very early KEs (I/II - on the KE-III, e.g. late W126/R107, it's done by a magnetic solenoid, similar to what EGRs look like) - action has to be aimed to change air volume and make mixture leaner.

As for rough/surging engine operation mentioned by @gsxr before, you are right and that's why also idle is rosen if ECUs for ignition control allow, for achieving a more regular function and improve throttle response during that phase.

It's said on the document on the link from 'wikipedia' (in German) I'm copying here, but I will not try to make a translation of its content.
Thus technically speaking I might do wrong phrases or terms not accurately, so everyone is able to put that text into a web-translator and get their results..

Apologies if it's going too much off-topic now..

btw - a company has still online availability of similar device, offered for roughly under € 500, which can be adopted for M119s on E/S/SL-Classes from the era 1993/95 - 1995/98 (or '99 MY in US).

Thank you @Otrebla49.
So it's only for relative short period after starting filling a cap in emission standards.

Edit: Sorry. I mixed the cold start valve to EGS. ESG function period is still unknown.

Thank you @Otrebla49.
My pleasure - I will try to find any data as to mode/duration of this EGS/WUR operation.

Nevertheless please see some information here on linked post, although it might already be familiar to you if your car once had it:
