• You are bidding on an extremely RARE and very nice example of a well maintained Mercedes 500E Sports sedan. These were manufactured at the factory by Mercedes but finished off in the Porsche factory down the street.

It was one of Mercedes Benz's collaboration cars and according to some one of it's best examples of the best of both worlds.
Known as the "Wolf in sheep's clothing". Outstanding power to weight ratio and superior handling of a Porsche engineered engine and suspension Complete with all the luxurious appointments of a Mercedes.
This car has always been garaged and well maintained. The owner is a professional pilot and has taken great care of the car. It needs nothing except to be driven and enjoyed. The car does currently have 140140k miles and this may increase as it is still being driven.
It is a great driver or a perfect example for a concourse restoration as it would not take much. That being said it does have a few cosmetic flaws like some minor scratches and a paint chip here and there.

The car is available for in person or video call inspection and We can get more pictures if you need them.

Yup. You can still buy aftermarket pads without the rectangle, but not OE/Genuine.

Edit: Some aftermarket pads are OEM and excellent quality. Some are not OEM. Be careful when buying.

Any pad with the reflective rectangle is indeed intended for a diesel car. However, MB has superseded all W124 hood pads down to the one with the rectangle.

Good quality hood pads that are proper/appropriate for the E500E without the rectangle, MADE BY THE OE MANUFACTURER (OEM), are available on the aftermarket for our cars. I installed one not that long ago (and still have my OE MB pad with the rectangle,which is not appropriate for the E500E).

And they've been NLA a long time. I replaced mine in 2011 and they were NLA then. So I went OE with the "tell". Back then (and I suppose even now) I wasn't such a stickler for OE. For some things I absolutely believe it just doesn't matter, and for others it does. That decision mix is up to each owner.

Given the notorious heat under the hood of these cars, would you actually use this for yours? Or would you insist on the OE, even with the pad?

As I mentioned, I have installed one of these non-rectangle aftermarket/OEM pads on my car. About a year or two ago.

The problem with the rectangle pads from MB, is that peeling off the foil rectangle removes material from the pad due to the adhesive, and can even rip through and/or destroy the pad. The aftermarket sold pad (AHAZ link above) is a perfect fit, appropriate material and doesn't have the rectangle !!

All of that said, whenever I drive the car, I always raise the hood after it is parked to let the under-hood engine heat dissipate. It's a best practice for our cars and helps preserve all of the "soft goods" (including rubber etc.) under the hood. Every little bit helps.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E​

This 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E spent time in Texas before being relocated to California, where it was acquired by the current owner in 2009. The car is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 V8 mated with a four-speed automatic transmission, and it is finished in Smoke Silver Metallic over beige leather upholstery. Equipment includes 18″ Avior alloy wheels, a power sunroof, Automatic Slip Control, automatic climate control, heated power-adjustable front seats, cruise control, and a Becker cassette stereo. Work completed under current ownership has involved replacing the hood liner, power steering pump, valve cover gaskets, ignition cap and rotor, ignition wires, spark plugs, wiring harness, and battery. This W124 500E shows 140k miles and is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a clean California title in the owner’s name.​

The 500E was assembled by Porsche and featured wheel arch flares, revised bodywork, and a lower ride height when compared to other W124 models. This example is finished in Smoke Silver Metallic (702). Euro-specification lighting has been added along with tinted turn signal lenses. A ding on the left quarter panel has been repaired. The Carfax report lists minor damage on a May 2009 entry. A fog light is broken, and images showing various trim, body, and paint imperfections are provided in the gallery.​

The 18″ five-spoke Avior alloy wheels are mounted with Continental Sport Contact 2 tires. The car is equipped with Automatic Slip Control (ASR), and braking is handled by four-wheel ventilated discs. The power steering pump has been replaced. The seller notes noise from the left rear suspension area when driving on rough surfaces with passengers in the rear seats.​

The cabin features heated power-adjustable front seats upholstered in beige leather along with a color-coordinated lower dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Amenities include automatic climate control, a Becker cassette stereo, a power-adjustable steering column, dual front airbags, power windows and locks, rubber floor mats, and cruise control. The seller notes the headliner and ignition switch have been replaced.​

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, an analog clock, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 140k miles.​

The 5.0-liter M119 DOHC V8 was factory rated at 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The seller notes a replacement hood liner was installed in 2022, and the valve cover gaskets, ignition cap and rotor, ignition wires, spark plugs, wiring harness, and battery have been replaced as well. Aftermarket intake plumbing is installed.​

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned damage.​

The California title is listed as a duplicate.​

Pity the factory cats were replaced with aftermarket junk. The proper bolt-on Timevalve Y-pipe is a nice bonus. Hope that rear suspension noise isn't failing SLS hydrolegs.

You know it's hydrolegs. You remember me chasing it before just pulling the trigger on everything "while parts were still available". My guess is a restoration and flip plan derailed by NOS parts.

Sold for $26,500, or a bit under $28k with fees. Low $30k's with T/T/T/T added.

Top three bidders had the value solidly around $25k. What was more surprising was the lack of other bidders. #4 at $10k!

SuperBowl Sunday closing likely did NOT help this listing. (<-- I almost forgot about this, as I'm not much of a basketball fan, or any sportsball for that matter. If there aren't internal combustion engines involved, it ain't a sport, lol.)

Yes, it was very average overall. The lights would be easy enough to change. One huge plus is that this car appears 100% rust-free. Well bought, although the soft-ish market likely helped (plus the SuperBowl effect).

At 140k on it, that's a TON of driving before it gets to the ground or parts car territory in my view. I think someone got a deal, having recently seen what one of these in this color looks like with new paint. This one looks a lot worse than it is.
