This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and is finished in Black Pearl Metallic over black leather. Equipment includes 16″ alloy wheels, a power sunroof, fog lights, a self-leveling rear suspension, Automatic Slip Control, automatic climate control, heated power-adjustable front seats, and cruise control. The current owner’s late husband acquired the car in 2007, and work performed in preparation for the sale included dent removal, headliner repairs, and the replacement of the driver’s seat module. This W124 E500 is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with spare floor mats, a factory tool kit, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean New York title in the current owner’s name.​

The E500 was designed and produced in collaboration with Porsche, with final assembly completed by Porsche in Stuttgart. This example is finished in Black Pearl Metallic (199) with gray lower cladding, and equipment includes a tilting and sliding steel sunroof, front fog lights, headlight wipers, a monoblade windshield wiper, asymmetrical side mirrors, and model-specific flared fenders. The front lower bumper is said to have been repainted under previous ownership, and dents in the hood were reportedly removed in preparation for the sale. Close-up photos noting flaws can be seen in the gallery below.​

Silver-finished 16″ eight-hole alloy wheels wear 225/55 Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus tires that were mounted in September 2021, at which time all four wheels and the spare were refinished. The car is equipped with Automatic Slip Control (ASR) as well as a self-leveling rear suspension. The E500 featured a wider track and a lowered suspension compared to other W124 models, and it shared its disc brakes with the contemporary R129 SL.​

The interior features four-place sport seating upholstered in black leather, and burl wood veneers accent the dashboard, door panels, and center consoles. Additional amenities include heated power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, automatic climate control, cruise control, an electric rear window sunshade, and a trunk-mounted CD changer. The front and rear console wood is cracked. The seller states that the trunk-mounted battery was replaced in 2019 and that the headlight control switch and driver-seat module were replaced in December 2021, at which time the headliner was repaired. Sets of Mercedes-Benz-branded carpeted and all-weather floor mats are included in the sale.​

The four-spoke steering wheel is scuffed and frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with an integrated analog clock, and a combination gauge showing coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. The six-digit odometer shows 76k miles, approximately 27k of which were added under current ownership. The instrument cluster was removed and sent to Tanin Auto Electronix of Racine, Wisconsin, for odometer repairs in January 2022. Total mileage is unknown.​

The 5.0-liter M119 DOHC V8 was factory rated at 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The Carfax report shows no accidents or damage and lists history in Missouri, Iowa, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.​

Good evening. I am very pleased to offer this honest, enthusiast-owned and maintained 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 to the Bringatrailer community. I am the current owner’s neighbor. Her husband passed away unexpectedly back in 2018. I will try to answer all questions to the best of my abilities.​

​

The car has many service records that I can reference, and I will upload all of them. Upon my initial mechanical inspection of this car, I was quite pleased to see that this car was obviously very well maintained. A few items needed attention:​

​

Exterior: I had a paintless dent repair technician remove dents from the front hood. Had all 5 wheels refinished by Proformance Industries in New Rochelle, NY, and put on new tires. Tires have less than 30 miles on them, they are new!​

​

Interior: Changed the Headlight Switch, Drivers Vent, Rearview mirror, Drivers seat control Module, and found OEM supplier for headliner material and changed that as well. Most people simply discard the original material and put in Alcantara, but because this car was all original, I felt the need and spent extra to source the OEM material. The odometer was sent for repair because there was a sound coming from it. BaT described the odometer as "TMU" on the listing because as of October 2019 invoice shows 76,001 miles and an October 2021 invoice shows 76,002 miles. While the shops are only 8 miles apart, and invoices dated two years apart, this car was flat-bedded, not driven, and as hard as that is to believe, the current owner was always afraid to drive any of the Mercedes’ in her late husbands collection, especially this one because right after they bought it, she curbed the front air dam, necessitating the lower front bumper to be repainted (this invoice will be attached). The mileage of this car is fairly consistent throughout its history.​

Mechanically: Car really needed nothing, but it was gone through to make sure that everything was operational. The suspension is solid and tracks perfectly. Brakes are 100%. Car shifts precisely and when you get on the gas it pulls like a 5.0 V8-Muscled Mercedes should!! You can easily brake traction in first and second gear (will chirp), this is one very solid engine with direct feedback and strong drivetrain.​

Tough jurisdictions for this one though... "Missouri, Iowa, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut"... and I see far too many January, February, March, April, November and December service dates. You'll be hard pressed to find those dates in my service records for northern cars.

I'd like to see what it looks like under the battery tray, or at least get a photo from the underside of the sheet metal. Not a dealbreaker, but could require some patching if the tinworm broke through from above. Overall looks like it's in decent shape but seems a bit more worn than the odometer implies, and there could be some $$$ needed for cosmetics in addition to the usual @GVZ $5k rule.

Curious to watch this one after Friday's letdown... potentially a good deal to be had if reserve is reasonable!

TMU is such an annoyoing thing on any cars record, as in many cases such as this one it's total bullshit. Even if this car had been driven w a broken odo, it would have added, what, 2500 miles in that time frame based on the accumulation rate at the time?

It's like cars that get a salvage title for a 7 MPH fender bender.

I am the person who is listing this car for sale for my friend who passed away. He was a diehard MB Enthusiast, in addition, he has a W133 and a V12 W140. I am trying to help the widow with liquidating some items from his collection to fund his Twin's college. I am available to answer any and all questions (to the best of my knowledge).

I have been part of this board for some time and I was (am) on the hunt for an earlier 500E (just my preference). I have personally put in $6,500 in getting this car ready for Auction (started this fully back in September 2021), because funds are tight for the Widow. It has been a learning curve, to say the least. There is always "more" to do, but at some point, you have to say enough, it's a 30-year-old car (almost) after all.

The car is available for a test drive, inspection, you name it. Nothing to hold back here. The TMU is nonsense, this car was not driven since his passing. Initially, the widow thought to get it ready for auction back in 2019 (when she had the car serviced), but then became overwhelmed and the car just sat. It has been flat bedded back and forth...she is terrified to drive it, (1) because she damaged the front air dam the first time she drove it and (2) because of her understandable emotions and connection to her late husband.

I have many records, and it is like a puzzle piecing all these things together. I believe I have all the owners and all the documents now, so "complete" records. The previous owner was also an MB mechanic... self-taught. I believe he taught himself on the W140!! Would only buy original parts.

The headlight switch was changed because I found an intermittent problem. EDIT: This should have read high-beam stalk switch/lever.
If the upper strut bushing needs to be replaced, we were not told of this by MB or by another Mechanic (500E fanatic) that the car was serviced with. But I do see what you are pointing out in the photo.

I am going to take the battery out Monday/Tuesday when I have the car on a lift. I will take photos of both sides of the battery compartment and the underside of the car. I believe the condition is better than the mileage indicates. The car was garaged, no visible rust anywhere on the car, we are in the Northeast. I do not know how careful the family was with the car, everyone is different. Please look closely at the driver's seat bolster, it is not worn more than the odometer indicates. The previous owner was 6 foot-something.. probably why there is wear on the left side of the steering wheel.

Yes, those are the 2 main wiring harnesses most people inquire about. Make sure to clarify on the BaT auction comments that you have documentation of both being replaced. I updated the first post in this thread to clarify here as well.

Nothing is wrong with your headlight switch at all. Some W124s have a vertical line or '|' on the headlight knob, and some have a chevron or arrow (as yours does). @Jlaa and I have been obsessively cataloging which is which for fun and attempting to find some trend or rationale as to which gets which. Your car looks great, I am sorry to hear of your loss and hope the auction goes well. Indeed we were remarking about how minty fresh your high-beam switch is looking! Often times the silkscreen wears away from the UV of the sun, and it appeared that your high-beam switch looks new!

Hello everyone,
I just posted more photos on the Auction site, including the underside and Battery compartment. It appears the battery compartment will need a new battery tray to address the rust. The metal is still solid, I cannot imagine it is a big repair, but that needs to be left to the new owner to decide what to do. Upper strut bushings on both sides do have some cracking but are not compromised (according to the mechanic). Do you guys (and girls) think it would be a good idea to buy the parts and include them in the auction? There is definitely no time to address this now.

Ben, I say no, you have to stop somewhere. Fixing more issues at this point won’t be of much benefit to the final price.

You have pointed out pretty much all the issues on the car plus lots of maintenance history.

It’s a nice example that needs some deferred maintenance taken care of by the new owner.

Its pretty rare for someone selling the car on BaT to see this site as a help, and not a hindrance (for whatever reason) and its nice to see you come to the table with an honest and true representation of the vehicle, warts and all! It seems to be a nice facelift example that has weathered its NE years as best as it could.

I posted a comprehensive Summary of the Vehicle's History. You can see how OCD I am, by how I referenced photos that correlate to the history. I will not look through anymore paperwork, it is a tedious, and exhausting exercise. I noticed a few things and I am still investing into the vehicle... I think it will remain this way until it sells....Yes, I agree with Jlaa; "The list of things to do is asymptotic"!!!

It seems to me there is a problem because I got 4's and 6's but no 5's...Am I doing something wrong? Some photos of the metering are attached as well.

Thank you Manny! That is good to know....There is no wax on the car. I left it as-is from the previous owner. I washed it on the outside, re-finished the 5 wheels, and detailed the interior with leather cream. I think this would be a perfect candidate for paint correction and Ceramic coating.

In other news, 5 photos left to add to hit the "500" mark on the auction. It is within sight... so... should happen soon.

Best place to find one is on the 500Eboard forum classifieds. Pretty much every single E500E for sale in USA will be documented here. If you find one for sale online, search the VIN here to locate the thread discussing that car. Brilliant Silver was the third most common paint color so you will find one eventually, especially if you aren't picky about interior colors. The Wiki has a section with the number of each color combo produced for each year.

You should expand your search to include 1993 models, btw. There's nothing special about 1992 specifically, and 1993 received a couple of minor updates, in particular the automatic belt tensioner and power driver door mirror, along with a string of internal engine changes. To regain the lost 7 horsepowers, swap in a 1992 LH module and the 1993-94 engines will produce closer to 330hp thanks to the aforementioned engine updates.

She had a number in her head and this auction blew right past it!!! Best place to find one is on the 500Eboard forum classifieds. Pretty much every single E500E for sale in USA will be documented here. If you find one for sale online, search the VIN here to locate the thread discussing that car. Brilliant Silver was the third most common paint color so you will find one eventually, especially if you aren't picky about interior colors. The Wiki has a section with the number of each color combo produced for each year.

You should expand your search to include 1993 models, btw. There's nothing special about 1992 specifically, and 1993 received a couple of minor updates, in particular the automatic belt tensioner and power driver door mirror, along with a string of internal engine changes. To regain the lost 7 horsepowers, swap in a 1992 LH module and the 1993-94 engines will produce closer to 330hp thanks to the aforementioned engine updates.

LH module is the fuel injection computer. 1992 models had "full throttle / WOT enrichment" for a little extra power, this went away as of 1993 model year. Swapping in a 1992 module is a popular upgrade for 1993-up models. The 1992 modules are getting more difficult to locate now, but can still be found for a few hundred bucks. Wait until you buy a car, the PO might have already done the upgrade for you.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E500​

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 is finished in Black Pearl Metallic over black leather upholstery and is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 18″ AMG Aero II wheels, a power sunroof, fog lights, self-leveling rear suspension, Automatic Slip Control, heated power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, a Continental Bluetooth stereo, and cruise control. The car was purchased by its current owner on BaT in May 2022, and subsequent work included changing the oil, flushing the brake fluid, and replacing the steering damper, rear suspension accumulators, engine and transmission mounts, accessory belt and tensioner, and more as detailed below. This W124 E500 is offered on dealer consignment with owner’s manuals, service records, spare wheels and tires, a clean Carfax report, and a clean North Carolina title.

The E500 was designed and produced in collaboration with Porsche, with final assembly completed by Porsche in Stuttgart. This example is finished in Black Pearl Metallic (199) with gray lower cladding. Exterior details include headlight washers and wipers, integrated fog lights, a monoblade windshield wiper, asymmetrical side mirrors, and a power sunroof. The front bumper cover was replaced in 2004, and the turn-signal relay was replaced in 2022. Photos provided in the gallery below show weathered and blemished paint along with a cracked left-side mirror base.

BBS-manufactured 18” AMG Aero II wheels are mounted with 245/40 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires, and 10mm spacers are fitted up front. The car is equipped with Automatic Slip Control (ASR) as well as self-leveling rear suspension. The E500 featured a wider track and lower ride height when compared with other W124 models, and it shared its front disc brakes with the contemporary R129 SL. The rear suspension accumulators were replaced in 2022, and work in 2024 included replacing a hydraulic suspension hose and the steering damper as well as flushing the brake fluid.

The heated and power-adjustable front seats and the individual rear seats are upholstered in black leather and are accompanied by a color-coordinated lower dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Burl wood trim accents the cabin, which is further appointed with automatic climate control, a Continental Bluetooth stereo, dual front airbags, cruise control, and a powered rear-window shade. The driver-seat module was replaced in 2022, and the headlight switch was replaced in 2024. Loose headliner fabric and cracked trim are shown in the gallery.

The power-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. Wear on the steering-wheel wrap is depicted in the gallery. The six-digit odometer shows 80k miles, approximately 4k of which were added under current ownership. The instrument cluster was removed and sent to Tanin Auto Electronix of Racine, Wisconsin, for odometer repairs in 2022. Total mileage is unknown.

The 5.0-liter M119 DOHC V8 was factory rated at 315 horsepower and 347 lb-ft of torque. The engine wiring harness was replaced in 2007, the PCV hoses and spark plugs were replaced in 2022, and the coolant-level sender, engine mounts, and air-cleaner mounts were replaced in 2024 along with the accessory belt, tensioner, and pulley. The most recent oil change was carried out in May 2024.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The transmission mounts, cooler lines, and exhaust hangers were replaced in 2024. The window sticker copy lists initial delivery to Dave Ostrem Imports in Des Moines, Iowa, factory colors and equipment, and a total suggested retail price of $82,975. The removed 16″ eight-hole wheels and mounted Continental tires are included in the sale, as are owner’s manuals, service records, and other spare parts. The Carfax report is free of accident or damage entries.

Meh… it had 78k on the odometer in May of 2024. Sure they could have put a ton of miles on it in the last year, but at the pace it had been driven the last 10 years 80k seems a good number.

But yes, technically TMU would help Seller lose that shirt more quickly.

Reading the 2022 auction, the TMU was actually present there as well. Looks like the odo work was done immediately prior to that auction. Probably not a big deal in this particular case, as all of the other dox seems to line up, so it was probably a temporary situation where a gear failed, the car was driven for a bit (not too long or for too many miles), odo was repaired, and car was sold.

So, the TMU delta with “real” mileage is very very likely miniscule. Still, as you said @maw, it is a stain on an otherwise splendid car. Probably will end up being more of a stain given the current market.

BaHaT is very quick to apply the TMU brand to absolutely every case where a speedometer/odometer has been repaired. This seems to be incentive for sellers to "forget" to mention any speedo/odo repairs.
