Yea, I never get why some folks even bother with pictures, when they post them too dark, out of focus, grainy, and out of proportion.

Makes me wonder what they are hiding, or are they just that careless with maintenance as well?

Here are his photos with a close enough proportion correction.
Took me 5 minutes to fix the photos, guess the seller is too busy too bother...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

Just spoke with the owner and he is sending me better pics tomorrow. He said it has minor rust areas a rust bubble on left c pillar, left a pillar and roof by back window. It has a leak in the ac system and the cel light comes on from a faulty air pump. He also said he knew about the ebay pictures and will be fixing them haha. Seemed pretty honest and didn't hesitate when I asked questions about the car. He told me he spent about 6k in repairs since he bought the car.

- if I prep those rusty spots well will they come back
- what can I expect to dish out on the ac leak
- what would be a good price to get the car at
- the rear bumper has been cut out to fit exhaust

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

AC may very well be evaporator; common failure point in these cars at this age. Dash must come out to fix, which is at least 15 hours; probably a ~$2000 job depending on labor rates.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

If there is a write up I can do it myself but will not be fun haha.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

AC leak is impossible to estimate a cost for, without further diagnosis. It could be as simple as a leaky Schrader valve, or as bad as a leaking evaporator. If it's the evaporator, first attempt is a sealant like Cryo-Seal (or similar). If that fails, the evap replacement is a ~20 hour job for a shop, ~40 hour job as DIY, and not fun. Google for W124 evap replacement and I'm sure you'll find forum threads and photos.

I'd ask for photos of the undercarriage to see if there is significant rust underneath. If the seller can't get it on a lift, he can at least stick a camera under the car for some rough pics. Rust is hard to kill, but since you live in Chicago I assume you're already familiar with that.

Do you know what he's asking for it? There's no BIN price on the reserve auction.

Ya this is true . We will see if he gets back to me I would be comfortable at 13k if the rust is not too bad. I asked about undercarriage and he said that it was not rusty but I would like to see pics. Ya I dread rust in Chicago so stupid.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Silver/Gray, 147kmi, $15k (Alamo CA)

What happened to one in georgia? You got it?

This is a concern as these are strange places for rust and at his asking price 15k it is too much for me to take on.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

Now on BaT: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1994-mercedes-benz-e500/

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 has 154k miles and is one of 1,528 imported to the US between 1991-1994. Powered by a 5.0-liter DOHC V8 paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission, the car shows service receipts for a great deal of sorting under the seller and previous owner. General maintenance items such as brake pads, rotors, a tune-up, and alignment were addressed by the previous owner, the operator of a Porsche specialty shop in California. The seller acquired the car in 2016 and replaced wiring harnesses, motor mounts, serpentine belt and tensioner, and worn suspension components. New fuel lines, distributors, spark plugs, and wires were also installed, and modifications include a Lorinser steering wheel, Koni struts, H&R springs, AMG wheels, a Renntech exhaust, and carbon air box. This E500 is sold with records since 2010, clean Carfax, and a clean Georgia title.

The Smoke Silver paint (702) can present as a gold hue depending upon lighting, and the lower body cladding has been painted to match. The paint shows several flaws on the bumpers and lower air dam, some thinning of the clear coat on the hood and trunk, and light scratches under the C-pillars. The seller describes two rust bubbles on the roof and trunk lid near the license plate. A motorized plate bracket is also installed.

The E500 was produced in cooperation with Porsche, and each car was hand-built over an 18 day period. This example has been fitted with H&R springs and Koni struts, as well as AMG Monoblock alloy wheels. Note the Renntech exhaust tips. The beige interior features four place perforated leather sport seats built by Recaro. Some rubbing and scuffs can be seen in the leather, but all interior equipment is said to function. The original stereo remains in place, and a Lorinser steering wheel was added. A Valentine One radar detector has been integrated into the ash tray, and 153,954 miles are shown on the odometer.

The interior is also equipped with heated memory seats, wood trim, anti-theft, a rear sunshade, and a storage compartment between the rear bucket seats. The headliner has begun to sag in the rear, and the fabric has come loose around the rear edge of the sunroof opening.

The 5.0-liter DOHC V8 is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and made 326 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque when new. A Renntech carbon fiber airbox has replaced the factory component. Within the past year, the seller has replaced both wiring harnesses, the starter harness, two motor mounts, the serpentine belt and tensioner, and e gas module. A new fuel line, correct distributors, and spark plugs have also been installed. Further pictures of the underside can be seen in the gallery. Service receipts describe new bushings and the replacement of worn suspension and steering components.

The Carfax indicated that the car was corporate fleet vehicle in New York before moving to Florida. The previous owner was based in California and the seller in Georgia. Service receipts describing work performed under the previous owner and seller, and can be found in the gallery. Original manuals and a service booklet are included.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

It apparently sold in February for $12k on eBay... is the BaT listing from the same seller, or is it a flipper? Much better pics makes me think it's a different seller this time. (??)

:scratchchin:

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

Did Earle Scheib pant over the rust?

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

LSBM31 is the seller... I'd love to get this car despite the 5 digit sum of repairs it probably needs, incl. rust removal and a paint job... However im "broken" financially and im over the pond... But the color combo is just lovely... It looks amazing.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

The rust on the inside of the A pillars looks serious enough & that rust on the Roof has to be holed right through the metal with a big bubble like that.

IMG_0604.JPG

That's a rear window out repair job to fix properly ($$$$) That car needs a very thorough PPI with someone who knows where to look for w124 rust!

Yes, roof rust is often a money pit, and at some point it is better to replace the entire roof panel. An interesting question though - what is the reason for rust attack in that place??

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

My 1992 500E has rust on the same spots.. I have 3,4 rust spots on the roof, at the bottom of c-pillar next to that part that you can remove, near the windshield left and right... And the best thing is - the car was already de-rusted and repainted ~7 years ago! So you can see, if not done right - rust will come back at the same spots even though it looks good the first years!

If its not rusted through repair is rather "easy" possible but mostly even by paint shops not done right. Its always important to ask for the exact way they want to fix it...
1. How its not done and only last 3,4,5 years after my experience is this: Sanding rust spot till reaching metal -> Putty/body filler -> Filler - > Basecoat -> Clear coat.
2. How it IS done right and rust will not come back (at least on that fixed spot): Sanding rust till reaching good metal -> sanblast area toroughly until not a singly tiny rust particle remains -> spray isolating layer of epoxy primer/filler with active anti-rust particles included -> Putty/Body Filler -> Filler -> Basecoat -> Clearcoat.
3. Or in the classic car resoration sector they go even further and after the sandblasting they add something called "E-Zinc (link!)" which is zinc plating on the spot and after that they start with expoxy primer/filler.

But you see, step 2. and 3. is much more work involved and its probably twice or more of the price of repair method 1.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

what is the reason for rust attack in that place??

My Guess, over zealous sanding or polishing at the edges from a past repaint let the rust in to that area of the roof. Or a blocked sunroof drain. Its an unusual area for W124 rust IMO.

Regarding rust repairs what I do is;

Cut out all rusted metal
Fully seam weld in new Steel of matching gauge
2x Coats highest quality cold Galvanising Paint
Urathane seam sealer to back of repair welds (Where applicable – filler on body finish areas)
(Protect the rear of the weld with either paint or injection Wax)
Paint finish as required
If in inaccessible or underbody area then high quality anti rust Wax is a must.

Don’t be fooled folks – nearly all average miles 500E’s have rust by now. And most (But not all) bodyshops will take the fastest easiest route to repair. Rust can never be fixed with filler – no matter how well it’s prepped - period. Moisture will find it's way from the back of the panel again the future - full seem welds are the only reliable way to seal.

If the car was recently re-painted you can reasonably expect big trouble to bubbled areas since the panel is holed through & fillered. A repair like mine above would be labour intensive / costly. But I have been repairing w124 rust like that for over 15 years & NEVER had rust return at all after repair.

Christian – get the rust seen to on your car ASAP is my advice. A stitch in time saves 9. Pull the front screen trims & see what’s going on. VERY common area for sometimes serious rust.

Seen this site recently it shows how some rust on the surface can be very bad underneath - http://www.motofreibeuter.de/?p=7536#more-7536 Although that's an estate version - there are actually more rust traps in a saloon. Like below the rear windscreen also. I've been pulling my 500E apart to insepct / repair all these common areas.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

Yes my example of fixing is an area where its not yet rusted through and created a "hole" :-) If there are already big bubbles its mostly rusted trough, however on my car its still "ok" and was probably cheap fixed, with the method i described above how not to do it, but how its advised on most DIY videos on YT and in german harware stores - lol!

I will check the spots probably this summer and paint them by... Still have 3 Liters of convetional un-thinned Glasurit Basecoat in DB199 here

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

6 hours to go in the auction with bidding currently at $12,750. Thoughts on how high it will go--and will it hit reserve?

Looks like the seller paid $12K for it not too long ago and recently asked $15K (or maybe that price was from a previous seller). The car has also been to Blue Ridge and Leistung--though it's not entirely clear to me how much of the work in the receipts was actually done. There's a Blue Ridge "Estimate" for $3,869 (but it looks to include a $400 credit so the actual total is $4,269) and another "Estimate" for $1,342. Then there's an "Invoice" for $1,911 which looks like it covers the things (with some additional work) in the $1,342 estimate. Then there's another picture of the $3,869 Estimate, then another Estimate for $3,660 that covers a lot of the things in the previous estimate. If I were a buyer, I'd really like to know how much work has actually been done recently. The writeup says wiring harnesses, tensioner, mounts, etc. have been done recently and these items are in some of the invoices titled "Estimate" so my guess is that work has been done (though it's still strange that there are multiple pictures of the same or similar invoices so if someone isn't looking carefully they might just add the numbers up to think it has had a lot more work done than is actually the case.

There's also a Leistung invoice, but it's from 2010 and doesn't contain big ticket items.

EDIT: Looking through the comments, the seller says he has spent about $10K on repairs.

Funny that there's so much BaT commentary and the fuel economy of the car.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 154kmi, eBay (Lawrenceville, GA)

And four years ago this same car could've had for under 10K. Might have even been in better shape than now...

Too bad I didn't get into the market at that time. Or earlier...

1994 Mercedes-Benz 500-Series E-500
Great car that has been pampered since I bought it

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 has 156 000 miles and is one of 1,528 imported to the US between 1991-1994. New fuel lines, distributors, spark plugs, and wires were also installed, and modifications include a Lorinser steering wheel, Koni struts, H&R springs, AMG wheels and new Hankook tires 2000 miles , a Renntech exhaust. This E500 is sold with records since 2010, clean Carfax, and a clean Georgia title on hands

The Smoke Silver paint (702) can present as a gold hue depending upon lighting, and the lower body cladding has been painted to match. bracket is also installed.

The interior is also equipped with heated memory seats, wood trim, anti-theft, a rear sunshade, and a storage compartment between the rear bucket seats. The headliner has begun to sag in the rear, and the fabric has come loose around the rear edge of the sunroof opening after 24 years

The 5.0-liter DOHC V8 is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and made 326 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque when new. Within the past year, has been replaced both wiring harnesses, the starter harness, two motor mounts, the serpentine belt and tensioner, and e- gas module. A new fuel line, correct distributors, and spark plugs have also been installed.

Further pictures of the underside can be seen in the gallery. Service receipts describe new bushings and the replacement of worn suspension and steering components. New Bosch battery., new fuel pump.

The build plate details the following options.

Service receipts describing work performed under the previous owner, and can be found in the gallery. Original manuals and a service booklet are included.

Summary:

This is a wonderful example of an Iconic Mercedes-Benz built by both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz. Fun to drive and is a collectible that will surprise you how well it performs, they got it right on the 500E. Now it is time for the next owner to enjoy the car.

FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 156kmi, $20k (Fort Lee, NJ

Hehe. Interesting. Just read through all the history on this thing. Wonder what Jono has to say about this guy. Other than the rust, a couple of observations:

-one of the earlier pics with the car running makes it look like the fuel gauge isn’t operable. (Down past the R with no light on)

- the roof bubble shot seems to show a single pane rear window with the wider spaced larger defrost elements.

- whats with the bent rear plates in all the pictures? Is that due to the light install thats been mentioned in a few of the threads?

-cupholders 🤬

- becker 1692 with a failing display, not the 1492 it would have originally come with

Coming back down to Earth.......slowly.......

:mauiwowie:

Hi Guys!

I purchased this E500 a few months back and am recently finding out more and more information about its interesting past! It seems as though not much has changed with the car other than some maintenance work over the last few thousand miles. Just curious if anyone has found out anymore information about the history of this car with the Florida PD and its purposes in the department, or how it came to be acquired by the Florida PD? I plan on holding on to the car for a while and have been slowly restoring it back to factory, while still trying to keep as much of the Police history intact. The car is still a work in progress and needs some cosmetic fixes, and the Renntech air box was not sold with the car.

Thanks!

Owen

What time of year does the cars and coffee run? It's about an hour and a half from me but the car will be in the shop getting some suspension work done either next week or the week after, so it will not be making the journey to Great Falls for at least a few weeks.

If you're ever near by just PM me as well. We have a few small shows near me on Wednesday evenings until sometime in October... Normally more of an American car crowd, but we do have a few Euro cars that make it out!

Katies runs all year round. But of course the turnout depends on whether. When the weather first turns nice, there can be a few hundred cars there. I haven't been in a while but I expect the turnouts are still quite large.

An hour and a half is quite a trek for Katies, especially since you would want to be there by 6am or so to get a good spot. I'm not sure that I would be that motivated!

Perhaps we can organize a mini DC/VA/MD area get together before the weather turns bad?

There are a bunch of members listed in MD, including the 500eBoard head Honcho. Some of the others might be close depending on where you're located.

Member Map link is at the top of the screen.

500Eboard Galactic Headquarters operates out of scenic Annapolis, Maryland -- near the intersection of US-50 and MD-450, just over the Naval Academy Bridge, and a few steps from the beautiful Severn River.

I'll be at the St. Michael's Concours d'Elegance on Sept. 29th, as my next trip over to the Eastern Shore.

Will you there be any other E500's at the Concourse? I have never been but am only about 45 minutes from St. Michael's. Thanks for all the meet up information! I had no idea that this much went on near by!

Yeah... 6 am is a little early for my blood 😂 but a mini DC/VA/MD meet would be awesome! I know some good areas near by me, but I imagine a better center point such as Annapolis or DC/Baltimore may be more suitable for everyone else! Let me know if guys come up with a good meeting point and time frame that works well and I will definitely try my best to make it!

I checked out the 500E map and saw someone in Chestertown, MD also has an E500E so that would be awesome if we could all get together and do a little meet up! It would be very neat to hear the stories behind everybody's cars and get to see all the examples of the 500's that are in this area! I honestly had no idea that there was such a community for these cars when I purchased mine!

It's too far of a hike for me to get over there to Katie's so early in the morning on a weekend, as I'd have to get up at 4:30 and be out the door by 5 AM. I'm up at 5-5:30 on the weekdays, but try to sleep in a bit to 6 or 6:30 AM on the weekends.

We've had a gathering some time ago here in Annapolis, and had quite a few folks, for a weekend meal, and that was fun. My house is also just 4 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, though I don't go near that bridge this time of year unless it's early in the morning or late at night !!! Back in 2015 we had a major E500E gathering held in conjunction with the MBCA Deutsche Marque car show in Northern Virginia. A couple of forum members also live here in Annapolis, too.

I have a long driveway and plenty of space at my house if folks wanted to do a gathering here and perhaps a meal in downtown Annapolis (which is less than a 5-minute drive from my house). We could also grill in my backyard. If we wanted to do some light maintenance, detailing or other work, or pulling/diagnosing codes, I could certainly accommodate that as well. I've just hit 16 years of ownership on my E500, just this month. It's lived in Oregon, Texas and now Maryland under my ownership.

I new the CA Owner "Steve". I have a video of the strobe lights being demonstrated at Cars & Coffee in Irvine, CA. Steve had 2 E500Es Owen's car being one of them. I tried to post the video but the file was to large at 12.2MB.

Anyway it was an interesting car with the Miami Vice story. Steve didn't keep it very long if I remember.

I would definitely be down for a meet in DTA. I'm there already at least once a month for food and love some of the restaurants in that area! Pick a date and I will be there! :)

With some notice, I would drive up for that GTG (roughly 2+ hour drive with no traffic).

Not my car, but thought it worth posting given they claim it started life as an FBI surveillance vehicle. A strand of E500E history I was hitherto unaware of!

Auction description

Highlights

  • 322bhp V8 developed and built by Porsche
  • Claimed former FBI vehicle with unique provenance
  • Features unique FBI-fitted pursuit features we are told
  • Garaged stored since 2025 when bought by seller
  • Recently imported from the USA with duties and taxes paid

The Appeal

When Mercedes saw the M5's success, it wanted a piece of the action. With its own engineers busy creating the $ 1 billion W140, the firm turned to Porsche for help. The result was the W124 E500, a 322bhp V8-engined super saloon. Porsche developed and engineered it using the big M119 5L V8 and fitted it with sports suspension and heavy-duty brakes. Production was moved to Porsche’s own factory because its 56mm wider track was too much for Mercedes' own factory. Each one was largely hand-built and took 18 days from start to finish.

The E500 then has fine pedigree. This USA-market 194 car goes even further, because we're told that this stealthiest of super saloons was used by the FBI to discreetly track mafia suspects. These cars are ideally suited to high mileage, and despite this one having been used and enjoyed, its silver metallic paintwork and beige leather cabin all present well.

The vendor bought the car in 2025 and says European duties and taxes have been paid. Local registration is pending. The car is said to run and drive well with no faults. For those seeking an E500 with a story unlike any other, this is a compelling proposition.

Merged this thread with existing thread on the car. Interestingly it looks like the local (to me, in Maryland) owner sold the car and it got imported to Germany.

Doesn't look like the PO here in Maryland has logged into the forum for the past couple of years, so it's likely the car was sold off during that interval.

FBI story sounds like pure fiction.

This is what the seller claims:

It is actually much more "James Bond" than you might think! This specific car is an authentic, original conversion used by the FBI in the United States for undercover operations against organized drug cartels.
It is equipped with real tactical features from its service days, including:
* A motorized, flip-up rear license plate holder.
* A hidden compartment integrated into the front side skirt that extends electronically and is completely invisible when closed.
* A full set of covert police strobe lights and flashlights hidden behind the grilles and lenses.
It is a fully documented piece of law enforcement history, built on the already legendary E500 platform.
However, there are ZERO photos of plate-flipper or motorized hidden compartment claimed to be on the car. There is a blurry, poor-quality video showing the strobe lights though.

:watchdrama:

Indeed, it would be nice to see some details of these law-enforcement "enhancements." Given how they have been touted, there is precious little documented information about them.
