38 pin cable

No, I bought a mushroom breakout box.
I just rather be near the ignition as I read the blinker codes, etc.
If I can get a long cable for the mushroom, I might feel better about my mushroom box.
If I am hunch over the hood, I will tend to think, did I need this mushroom?
Planning on reading the live data while driving?

That setup will only get you connected to one or two of the computer modules... looks like pin 4 (LH module) and, maybe, pin 7 (E-GAS). Nothing else.

:duck:

Where can I buy a 38 pin cable so I can sit at the driver's seat with a break out box and blinker code reader?
If you just want to use a blinker box, skip the extension cable. There's no advantage. Bring a chair out to the passenger front wheel if you want to sit down.

The only point in the extension cable is if you have a digital scanner and want to view live data while driving. IIRC, the Snap-On MT-2500 has cables long enough so you can hold the unit and watch it while driving. Better yet, have someone else drive while you mess with the scanner in the passenger seat. You can get a whole MT-2500 kit (used) with the MB cartridge, cable, keys, etc for well under $400 if you are patient shopping on eBay.

The factory extension cable is shown below. About $400 new. I've never seen one for sale used, except as part of a ~$2k HHT kit like this one in Germany.

I have an AST retriever which connects to the 38 pin connector through a break out box using a network cable. It's able to read and translate the blink codes into letters and numbers which in my mind is easier then morse code. I think it cost me under a couple of hundred dollars including the box and OBD2 connector. As it uses a cat 5 cable, you just need a longer cable. I've seen them come up for sale every so often on CL / Ebay.

I guess you can just make three very long cables with LED's on one end and pins on the other and do the same.

Is turning on and off the key any part of the blinker , code clearing?

Basically, no. You clear each blink code with the blinker box. After clearing DM codes (pin 19) you may need to start and/or drive the car afterwards to confirm they are all cleared, but otherwise the key just stays on while you blink away.

Now, with the HHT/SDS/Star... you gotta turn the key off for 10 seconds after clearing codes from most systems, which is a PITA.

:shocking:

And any time you (manually via push-button) clear multiple codes that trigger the CEL, you need to cycle the key on and off between each code cleared. I usually wait 5-10 seconds with the key cycled off before turning it back on and going to clear the next code.

oh sorry!
Thanks.
I've just understood what is this mushroom.
My error comme from your old post there #2, gsxr.

I've just bought the different parts listed in the link pointed.
more exactly in this post:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r12...nostic-trouble-code-reader-3.html#post5659803

And so, i've understood. i've bought a bad 38 pin connector. a simply 38 pins connector without cable should be better for me.
And my 16 pin cable extension is bad too.
I've just lose money.

So, thank to your post, Stevester, i just read many other post about " famous mashroom, blinker code reader, SDS clone, etc...."
I think i need a Mashroom and (made or buy) a basic blinker code reader or a chinese SDS clone (as a stardiag C3)

IME, you can clear all the codes sequentially without cycling the key, however, as you circle back to the first one, it will report as not cleared until you cycle the key. At that point, all stored codes are cleared

Yes. I always like to check that each one is cleared before going to the next one. Just me being anal.
