Re: one owner 500E for sale

A testament to where the market is today with these cars... "And I DO NOT need help selling this car, nor will I front any stupid scheme you may have in mind. Please do not waste my time if you are not a serious buyer."

This wasn't the market just three years ago. SMH

The seller is posting the car for his father. If anyone is serious with interest I will go have a look as it is a short drive.

Re: one owner 500E for sale

Could not or would not fix the wiper arm for the pic? Sad.

I'm thinking the V12 S-class was the most powerful sedan MB had at that time...maybe not.

Help those who are far away Drew if you are close to it.

Re: one owner 500E for sale

Car does not look mint at all especially for the mileage . Looks like typical DD. Engine bay even on pics does not look promising .....

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

There's $12-14K of deferred maintenance (including some cosmetics) on this car to get it where she needs to be.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

That's what I suspect, but I figure I'll see what he has for records/majors etc, etc....

...but yes, 10K wouldn't surprise me 1 itty bitty bit...and depending on Just how deferred it could easily be 15+.

That looks like a DIY number to me. Again, jus sayin'. But at 90k on the clock, the car is still young, and will give the right owner years of enjoyment, plus some financial appreciation to boot if it goes to a multiple car home.

Hey, at least they're not asking $40k like the So Cal Flippers! Price seems reasonable, but as always, the new owner will need a blank cheque for the resurrection.

Mileage is not too high but car is old so will require lots of attention . If it was 90K enthusiast owned then yeah it is young but this is not case here ....

The only bonus with this example is that it is one owner and supposedly has mint/new front original seats .

Yes, but he's only an expert on Volvos, and besides the 500E is over here in a far north Atlanta suburb with a person that seems to be the original owner's son.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

Guys, here's the scoop (this is my Dad's car):

Dad bought the car new from RBM in Atlanta because he wanted to and could. He was a long-time PCA member who sold his 911SC and wanted something fun but more practical. He had just retired at 62 and he and my Mom wanted to travel. He kept his membership in the PCA and even drove the 500E in some driving events at the Talladega Grand Prix track. He has taken good care of the car over the years, but as he's gotten older, he's driven the car less and less. He's now 86 and we won't let him drive anymore.

All the major systems have been taken care of and we have receipts for the repairs we've had done the car, and my Mom has all the other receipts. It is not perfect, and I certainly bow to the experts here as the strengths and weaknesses of the car. But I wanted to leave the car as close to the condition that Dad kept it. The engine hasn't been cleaned, but anything to do with the engine is right there in the open.

I also have no idea what to ask for this car. The number I'm using ($16K) is a number my Mom picked, but I and the car are available for anyone's inspection and I welcome an honest discussion with anyone about the car and the price. I live in Woodstock, GA and work in Marietta. I drive the car regularly and arrangements can always be made.

Note that even with the minor accident reported from 17 years ago, it still scores well above the high range for the car in AutoCheck.

My number is 678-438-1612.

Thanks!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

Thanks for the reply and :welcome3:

Can you provide more details about what the accident was?

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

Note the accident was in 1997, when the car was likely still valued at $50k+. Even a minor incident (i.e., scraped paint and no wrinkled metal) would be reported as it could get repaired under insurance.

As the cars age, sometimes even major damage goes unreported, especially when the owner is at fault and/or if they didn't have collision coverage. Several of my parts cars have squeaky clean AutoChecks and CarFaxes, despite being wadded up beyond repair. Bottom line, I wouldn't get too hung up about one line item on the report, especially if the owner can provide more details as to what happened...

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

IMHO a one owner with less than 90k on the clock and maintenance records makes this car worth the money. Of course, a hands on inspection would be required to evaluate the car. The only flaw I see is the color combo, but that's just my love for black interiors in these cars.

A minor accident, depending on the damage, is not a game changer for me. We had a new ML320 in 2000 that was rearended and the damage was limited to breaking the plastic bumper. The repair bill came to about $1800. My wife's Lexus, on the other hand, was hit by a bicycle and it did $7000 worth of damage! These cars are tanks and can take a lot. The car deserves a thorough inspection and I'd like to see the front seats without the sheepskins.

Just because your car may have $5k to $10k of deferred maintenance doesn't mean that is worth LESS than your asking price, which is a good price given the single ownership, maintenance/repair records, and relatively low miles. Good luck with the sale!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

We have several very knowledgeable folks who live in the Atlanta area (dealership folks, independent shop owners and longtime multiple 500E owner) who can take a look at your car and give you an honest assessment as to what it is worth. It may well be worth more than you are asking, and if it is, that extra money rightfully belongs to you and your family !!

The $5K thing is just a rule that pertains to ALL of these cars -- not any particular one of them. Basically it states that all of these cars, no matter the mileage or stack of paperwork it has, require $5K worth of maintenance/replacement of things. Often these are hidden parts that nobody thinks about, such as the motor mounts/transmission mount, suspension bushings, flex discs, and so forth. Or an A/C system that blows cold for a year or so after being refilled, but then blows warm again. Or that drip-drip from the front driver's side of the engine. Basically the $5K rule is just something that any buyer needs to factor into their purchase going into it, so that the car is made right and complete once issues start to pop up.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Black/Black, 89kmi, $16k (Atlanta, GA)

This looks like a good car at a good price. I'm particularly impressed that the seller hasn't tried to pass off the car as mint. People looking for these cars know they are 20+ years old and will have issues so it's good to see that issues with the paint, headliner, etc. were mentioned up front. My guess is that kind of honesty will make more people interested in checking out the car.

Indeed! See post 16. Bought at RBM, had some early servicing there. Spent it's life a few hours away in Birmingham (ours, not yours...). Now his son has it here near the ATL again.

Thanks!

Hello! I just wanted to report that I am the happy purchaser of this beautiful, low mileage 1992 500E VIN: WDBEA36E8NB612254 (Although this is my first 500E, I have been reading numerous posts over the last month and I know how much Gerry likes to document each vehicle!) The service documentation from the previous owner was extensive,
and I have list it in my album titled "My first 500E". I'm excited to be part of this exclusive group of passionate owners and I look forward to learning much from each of you! Pete

Congrats and welcome!! That car looks well bought to me, at any number at or below that price. I got a good deal on a low mileage Jan '92 car a few years back, and on the back end of bringing her back up to my spec, I'm glad I did. This site will be worth it's members' weight in gold, so check back often. I for one am looking forward to seeing what you do with the car.

Thanks maw! The doctor, who bought the car new at a dealership in Atlanta (RBM Klink...) but lived in Alabama, was a Porsche fanatic. He bought the 500E when he retired because of its' relationship between Mercedes and Porsche, desiring a four door Porsche that he and his wife could feel comfortable driving around the countryside, enjoying their retirement. Being an enthusiast, he was religious about servicing the car and maintaining all the service records which his son turned over to me. In addition, in 1997, he installed sheepskin covers over both front seats,(mileage at the time 39,088), so when I removed them, there was absolutely no sign of wear on the seats. I lathered them up with Surf City Garage Voodoo Blend™ Leather Rejuvenator, and they are as good as new.
Unfortunately, the Doc did not have a garage, so the car spent it's parked life under a carport where it took its' toll on the paint. I spent the better part of last Sunday cleaning, buffing, polishing. It's better, but still needs a professional's touch. The fender bender in December of 1997 was minor, involving someone bumping into the rear bumper on the left hand side of the car.
