Roadtrip: Adirondack State Park, September 2011

Went for an extended weekend into the heart of New York’s Adirondack State Park. A very beautiful time of the year. The leaves are starting to change color. The weather was very summer-like.

The car performed flawlessly, effortlessly carrying 3 people with luggage (the subwoofer was left to perform garage guard duty) over the 700+ mile roundtrip which consisted of Interstate highway, NYS Thruway & twisting paved mountain roads of dramatically changing gradients.

What a ride. Definitely a recommended Grand Tour in a 500E. The destination was pretty good, too. :p

Thanks for the pics.....I love that part of New York State! Is that Lake Placid/Whiteface mountain?Andy

You are most welcome. The pictures are of the Lake George, Lake Placid/Mirror Lake, Whiteface & family/friend residence areas within Essex County. I'm definitely going back very soon for another fix!:koffie:

Great pics! I grew up in that area, and have family near both Lake George and Saranac Lake. I was there in fall 2010, but not with the 500E (flew in to NY and was driving my dad's W124 300D). That one shot of Lake Placid definitely looks like it was taken from the Whiteface Mt visitor center.

Attached are a couple pics of Lake George from Prospect Mt. I have some better shots from back in 2002 (when the foliage was more impressive), but they're not digitals... need to scan 'em.

The colors are just starting to change. Over the next 2 weeks the colors will really pop! (as shown in your pics).

Kinda funny thing happened while taking the gondola up Whiteface. It sh*t the bed. I blame my older sister...put her anywhere near electronics & they will be fried within minutes. :shocking:Took us a while to get to the top with all the starting, stopping, reversing, bouncing (good thing we hadn't previously eaten!:barf:). We took advantage of the time by Skype-ing relatives with our portable WiFi & showing them the view.

The gondola sputtered its last just as we made it to the top. The attendant had to manually open the doors for us (I felt sorry the the young family we passed going the opposite direction with their children's flush faces pressed hard against the plexiglass).:buggin:

The main switch was fried & the gondola was shut down for the rest of the day. We were driven back down 2432 vertical feet to the base in the back of a 4WD truck with a few other sightsee-ers. We actually had a blast!

Needless to say, we promptly drove to the Lake Placid Brewery for grog & grub to celebrate! :beerchug:

Oh, BTW, Whiteface gave us a free ticket to do it all over again anytime within a year!

Oh cool! I have never been on the gondola... we drove up to the top! Fun drive, but you gotta make sure your cooling system is good before attempting it in mid-summer! Generally not a problem near October though.

:D

Did your 5 door and trunk switches live up to expectations ?!?

Holy Crap, did they!! Within a week I had to remove the leather scent, both headrest mounted coat hangers, the cargo net and 3 of 5 switches! :buggin:

Way too powerful an allure. I wouldn'ta been able to take another session without some recovery time. :shitnot:

Thank God only a little more driving season left to go! :relieved:
