E500 Road Trip to Glacier National Park

Back in September 2007, we went on our honeymoon to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. At the time we drove the silver 1994 E500 which I had only owned for a few years. Made that trip with the stock 16" wheels/tires and have a few pics with the car in it, which I need to find and post.

Fast forward 15 years and we decided to head back to Glacier for our anniversary, and take the same E500 (now with ~18 years of ownership). This time it's rolling on Evo repops as those have all-season tyres, and I didn't want to risk hitting bad weather with summer Pilot PS4.

Back in 2007, after tourist season officially ended post-Labor Day, traffic was light and people were few. Not this time, unfortunately. Traffic is bad and people are everywhere, at least in West Glacier and west of Logan Pass on Going to the Sun Road. We even had a several-minute wait to get into the park with 3 lanes/booths open. Very unusual for mid-September.

Even worse, the first ~8 miles or so of Going to the Sun Road along Lake McDonald had road work blocking one lane periodically, with timed traffic lights (no sensors) that held up traffic unnecessarily. And, the temporary pavement patch over where they had dug the trench to lay ~12" diameter flexible black pipe was so rough, it pounded the car mercilessly. Thankfully this was only in one direction and we were driving that around 7pm when there were few people coming the other way (entering the park), so I was able to drive across the double yellow on smooth(er) paevment. I hope they will go back and fix it properly after the big black snake is buried.

As a bonus, since the entire west coast is on fire 🔥 , smoke is extremely thick and blocking all views of the mountains. Weather is beautiful, ~70°F/20°C high temps with hazy sun coming through the smoke. There are still good photo ops for close-up objects. Quick sample below of the E500 at the entrance to West Glacier, taken in between packs of cars mobbing the sign.

More pics coming later this week or next week.

Happy anniversary Dave! Interestingly, I was just there a few weeks go too. My first time to Montana, really beautiful country!

Happy Anniversary! Btw, what is on the steering wheel in the first pic?
Thanks all! Steve, that's an AutoMeter tubular tachometer / shift light, attached to the dashboard. In that pic it does look like it's on the steering wheel though. I'll get a photo of it from inside the car. This was used only as a launch light for drag racing, to keep RPM's in a narrow window to try and keep reaction times more consistent.

Lots more photos of various areas in & near Glacier on the way, plus a couple of stories... ugh, I hate road construction. Car still running great but is no longer clean. Skies cleared up a little today, less smoke & haze, but still not normal.

😥

First day after getting past the road construction at southern Lake McDonald, we headed up to Logan Pass, the peak of Going to the Sun Road at the Continental Divide. I spotted a small turnout just large enough for 1 car near the Triple Arches, and on the way down the hill I stopped there and took a bunch of photos. You can see how smoky it was, visibility of the mountains in the distance was poor. I ended up with a bazillion pics of the 036 instead, lol. In the one photo you can see the ridiculous amount of traffic for a post-Labor-Day visit. Usually, the park is nearly empty by mid-September, but nope, not last week!

After a boat tour of Lake McDonald (all smoked in, d'oh) the next stop was Trail of the Cedars, and the West Side Tunnel. Will post some of those pics soon.

After the boat tour, we hiked the Trail of the Cedars, which was pretty cool. Cell service was non-existent in most of the park, so there was the occasional pay phone in the middle of the woods. Very thoughtful of the NPS.

After this we headed up to get more photos of the West Side Tunnel. This is a drive-through tunnel on Going to the Sun Road, a bit west of The Loop, west of Logan Pass / Continental Divide. Really neat location. There is very little parking so you have to go when traffic is light, park in one of the nearby turnouts, and hike back. Wide-angle lenses required to capture the views, as you cannot back up far enough to get everything in frame without the wide angle.

Now it was late afternoon and we headed back up to Logan Pass, which was packed like sardines previously. When we first went there around noon, the parking lot was full!! Late afternoon we could actually get a parking space. This is at the Continental Divide along Going to the Sun Road. There is a trail to Hidden Lake Overlook, which doesn't sound too bad at "only" 1.3 or 1.5 miles (depending which sign you believe)... except it's almost all uphill. At ±7000 foot elevation.

After nearly collapsing several times on the way up due to being waaaay out of shape, we made much better time heading back downhill. To our shock, we passed a newlywed couple hiking up with their photographer. The bride was in full wedding gown, groom in his suit... crazy people!

Made it back to the visitor center / trailhead around 7pm and the parking lot was almost empty. The drive back to West Glacier was much more pleasant due to far lower traffic, much higher speeds, and some kind people who actually obeyed the "Slower Traffic Use Turnouts" signs. Going back through the construction zone was not fun (as described in post #1) and we vowed to *not* go through that section again.

Up next: Camas Creek entrance, and Two Medicine Lake.
