Alternator/Generator bad? Best Upgrade to 150A ?

Hello, i have the following issue with my 500E, which reminds me closely at my friends E420 years ago, which had the similar symptoms and it was a broken alternator.

When my car is at idle and i switch from P or N into any gear, RPM goes down to ~500 and lights inside + outside getting much much darker.
As soon as i press the pedal, the opposite happens -> immediate brighter lights inside and outside clearly noticable. This is my first indication.
My car has no false air leaks at the new engine, everything was thoroughly tested with mass amounts of brake cleaner, but still as soon as i roll to a stop with "D" still engaged, engine drops to SUB-500RPM!!!, then starts to surge 50RPM up/down for around 5 seconds and then holds itself at 500RPM.

When i have many electrical consumers activated like seat heating, lights and heating ventilation and i do a quick stop with the car, for instance while in a curve or while driving around a corner and suddenly there is a car/kid/whatever up front, the engine suddenly stops. RPMs simply going to much below 500RPM and one little surge is then enough to stop it.
And i think i know why this happens. The injection duration is learned by the ECU based on Voltage. The higher the Voltage, the shorter the duration/duty-cycle of the injectors.

I have replaced the voltage regulator provident, while the engine was being assembled still, with a 14.7V Beru regulator. But it seems that this didn't help.
So do you agree that my alternator is broken.

Upgrade possiblities to 150A versions? People in german forums claimed that the ones from W210 V8s or Diesels would be fitting and here i learned that there is one from the ML class (BOSCH-Nr: 0 123 520 012) that would fit.

Thanks alot.

What is your voltage reading, have you tested that? I had symptoms of an alternator going bad, but it turned out to be dirty leads. My symptoms were a rough start and the voltage reading was only at 10.5 volts. While my tech was trying a new alternator (which was failing as well, before the leads were cleaned) I asked if a stronger alternator was possible to install, since I had a stronger ICE system in place, he said yes and fitted a 160A altenator. The fitment is tight, but nevertheless the 160A alternator fits.

I do not recall from which car model the 160A alternator came from, but I can ask.

I thought the 160A has more than one control wire? I believe you can go up to a mid-2001 on alternators. The W164 6 cylinders and V8's have the 150A alternator. The S500's had the 143A alternator which looks identical to the stock 110A. Either 150A or 143A will fit. Use your old pulley if it one on the alternator is the wrong size.

Here in the USA, it's just finding what is common and cheap(and in good condition). They are so plentiful, you can get them for $40-100 and then just do brushes or brush/regulator assy. The rear bearing is fairly cheap and easy to replace.

Thanks, will this one fit?

No idea about the alternators above!

I have the 150A 0986041650 on mine.

The only issue is that the holes are for M12 bolts and not M10 bolts like on the original one.
So needed to do some inserts on the turning lathe to compensate for it.

To prevent the issue I had, check with EPC if the bolts for mounting the alternator above are M1o or M12.

Thanks. I posted pictures of the unit above, but i wont use it since it has different terminals.

I better go with the Bosch 0123520006. 150€ New is a "good" price i believe.

Nope,

You need the 2 wire style which ended around 2002-2001 depending on chassis.

Something like:

FYI, my upgraded one died, I rebuilt the factory one with a new brush/regulator and new front Bosch bearing + a rear bearing(NTN or FAG?). Took about an hr and was $75.

samiam, what unit died on you? 150A? Did you rebuild the stock 115A instead?

:mushroom:

I have a Bosch Reman 150A Unit in my 500E since 2013. However only like 2000km driven with it lol.
Im also interessted what died on your unit.

Related, but not directly relevant, was that I had one of the diodes fail in my 560SEC alternator earlier this fall. Unfortunately when a diode fails, all you can do is replace the entire unit, which I did with a Bosch reman. The alternator that failed was a Bosch reman that I replaced back in the fall of 2008.

Symptom was that the BATTERY light stayed on all the time, when the engine was off and key removed. It charged fine when the engine was running, and the battery light was off.

Reman alternators are a Russian Roulette mixed bag.
