Here’s another important item to have on hand, for you Parts hoarders. Wrecking yard spares are OK for emergencies, but it’s best to have a new factory spare on hand.

Is there the equivalent of a SHTF/BOB bag for these vehicles... a concise list of tools and critical spares which should be carried onboard the vehicle?

Must we be taunted with these parts? It's like seeing a playgirl model and knowing you'll never get any closer than the sticky pages.

For those of us that aren't as knowledgeable as the part hoarders, is there a list of "must have" parts that is on this site that we can reference to keep these cars on the road?

I am hit and miss. . . mostly miss when it comes to accumulating parts. For instance, I bought a lower wiring harness, BUT completely missed out on the lower control arms.

Don't have enough time to keep on top of developing NLA items. Is there a thread with a running list of "must have" parts?

Guess this is more of a site navigation question to get to the info.

First note. There is NO must have parts.(i think)It all varies from car to car..and person to person.

my take on this is as follows: DO NOT hoard.unless you have serious amount of money leftovers to spend just for the sake of it.
You can never forsee what is needed in the future..or what is going to be NLA..or whatever. There will always be a way of getting a part when you actually need it.
In my humble opinion..i think hoarding "can "harm people who actually need parts for their car..and people just bought X amount of parts that were leftovers from factory or whatever..just to sit on the shelf.Of course..people can buy whatever they like.and im not better than anyone else.
But i really think buying parts just to sit on the shelf..for the sole reason that "you might need it someday "is meaningless...you might aswell just buy two cars then.

A little example is my situation with the batterybox compartment.NLA part...did i get hold of a part when i needed it?yes i did.i searched until i found one :)even though ..a used one..but still a sufficient replacement part.:) there is always a way of getting hold of a part .

if planning on restoring a car..thats another story ..then you must hoard...so ...let the hoarding begin :gsxrock:

For the uninitiated...202-545-01-04.......an ignition switch?
Correct! And it's not easy to access. Small hands are, uh, handy.

I've had to replace quite a few headlight rotary switches, if yours doesn't always click neatly into each position, pick up one of those new while they're still only ~$50. Those are much easier to replace, thankfully. I've only had to replace one ignition switch and that was on a 1987 with over 200kmi on it.

:sawzall:

I had a new one installed about 2 years ago.

If I went and bought spare one I would never find it again. I'm still looking for my Hella coolant level sensor.

good point....to be honest..i have it the same way..i have some parts also,,and either i do not where i have put them...OR because of that..i didnt remember that i have had the part in the first place...
:)then the hoarders of parts will say..."well..keep it logged then..in shelfs with numbers and letters ,,and file a logbook on all parts"..

which would be a natural thing to do IF keep aaalot of parts :agree:

Don't have many, but I have been known to order parts only to find said part in my stash.

I agree that we can never forsee what is needed in the future, so we should strive to buy parts that keep the car on the road, ie. . .the fuel pump relay for the M117.

My wife is NOT thrilled that I have parts stored in "climate controlled" places in our house, but the MB disease demands a little diligence.

Also, indy shops like Jono's have the ability to make almost anything we may need in the future. They are making the lower wiring harness to address its NLA status.

This whole parts hoarding thing is a bit ridiculous, IMHO. At least, for myself, I tend to post [mostly] in jest.

When you own these cars for a long time, and do a lot of the work on them yourself, you tend to accumulate parts, along with the service parts and tools required to maintain them. And when you are exposed to things for long enough, you come across parts that are NLA (trim pieces and the like) and grab them when you can, if so inclined.

In all honestly, there's really not a situation I can think of that is un-solveable with these cars ... meaning that the part can't be found SOMEWHERE (either from a forum member, eBay, etc.), or be rebuilt or refurbished. Even the most esoteric things, always pop up eventually.

Look at 600Eric's refurbishment of his 500E. Sure, there were situations where he had difficulty in sourcing replacement trim and other parts, but that didn't hold him back, and he was able to get what he needed, within a decent time frame, to complete his resto. Or he had what he needed, professionally refurbished.

How many times has a car come up for sale here, and it's claimed to have "the lowest mileage ever recorded for a 500E", and then a year or three later, another car with half the miles comes up for sale? It happens all the time.

There are no absolutes in this world. We adapt and transform. We use this site as a resource for sharing knowledge, and for sourcing what we need to keep the cars running. Ultimately, that's the purpose of the 500Eboard "club" -- to keep our cars operating as intended (or better), and to have fun and make friends while doing it.

Cheers,
Gerry

It's pretty cool to need a part and have it on hand. This has happened only a few times.

Some of the parts I have accumulated have been because of a knee jerk reaction to the threat of becoming NLA.

Looking at some of these parts, I have to wonder. . .what was I thinking?

Will I ever need them?

When it becomes apparent that I will, in fact, not need them, I hope to be able to help others that might.
