hi guys . I sold a transmission on another board and Fedex lost it...

Unfortunately... yep. 😟

FedEx should at least reimburse you whatever amount their basic insurance is for ($100?), and possibly whatever you paid them. In the future, insure for cost of replacement - they'll require proof of value if you file a claim.

How could they lose a transmission!? Was it crated? It is a good idea to put multiple labels on an item, i.e. attach a second label inside a plastic pouch taped to the transmission itself, in addition to the label on the crate/box/tub.

:runexe:

You can always try and ship Ex Works or Free on Board but these terms are mainly for international shipping plus many buyers would likely not go for that or won't understand their liability anyway in case of a loss. Problem is usually if you pay via PayPal and such the case almost always goes in favour of the buyer. In general these courier style companies are not great at shipping larger goods and you're better off using a reputable Less Than Truckload (LTL) outfit specializing in freight rather than package moves. Sorry for the ramble but I used to be in the shipping business and it can be a nightmare dealing with UPS and FedEx especially. They make huge profits and are not in the business of settling claims let me tell you!

I once sold a 722.6 on ebay and sent it within UK via parcelforce. The buyer had the transmission nearly 2 weeks from memory then sent photos claiming damage. Chunk missing from the bellhousing! But from the limited photos they sent I could hardly tell if it was even mine or their own. Also it's more likely it arrived OK and they dropped it off the lift themselves.

In any case ebay / paypal ruled against me. And the parcel company who it WAS insured with rejected my claim saying that all used car parts are not covered under warranty. (Even though when booking it on I described it accurately and they took the extra premium as they did on many items from me)

After that I refused to send transmissions to anyone. They need to arrange their own courier.

Items that are small/light enough to be in a typical cardboard box... pack it to survive being thrown off a 2-story roof landing on concrete, and you'll probably be ok. Double-boxing fragile items (e.g, €5k headlight lenses) is highly recommended.

Big, heavy stuff is more difficult: differentials, transmissions, engines. Building a wooden crate is the safest method, and don't skimp on the wood size.

Always include a duplicate shipping label inside the box or crate, with both addresses / phone numbers, in case the main external label is lost or damaged. If the label is lost, the shipper has no idea who the item belongs to, and it goes into a black hole for all eternity (likely sold at auction or scrapped).

As noted above, the insurance is basically worthless for damage (it's always the shipper's fault for inadequate packaging, even if they ran it over with a truck)... but if they completely lose the package, that's on them.

The only way the insurance will cover you is if you take it to a fedex store and they charge you to pack it. Otherwise their default answer is that it was not packed correctly.

Additional cover is a form of insurance and by its very nature financially not worth it.

I sell quite a lot online and rarely take value based cover unless the item is well into 3 figures.

The odd refund I do hurts a bit at the time but I’m up overall by shouldering the risk myself.
