I have a considerable collection representing the 40s through today covering vintage street, F1, Indy, CanAm, Touring Car, Endurance, CART, Prototypes, Classic roadsters, and even some Muscle cars. I'll post some of the Mercedes.

I love to build plastic model cars. Right now I am collecting kits to build in my retirement. I have a huge bin filled with kits I buy now and then or when I go to Japan for business. Incredible modeling community there. I have a few Mercedes kits and was just looking at 190E Evo kit.

I built many plastic models in the past. Later there was a time when i was limited in what i could do physically and i enjoyed modifying the Die Casts. As you mention, many of the higher quality kits would come from Japan. Is Tamiya still in business?

drew

Yes, Tamiya still in business. There are amazing Youtube channels documenting model builds that demonstrat great techniques. The hobby has collapsed in popularity since my childhood but there still seems to be a small vibrant communite of builders and supplier.

So whats "the brand" to get?

my c36 is by UT models and the 500sl is Revell
There were many different companies producing die cast models the last time i looked which was quite a while back. Ertl, CMC, Burrago, Hot Wheels (Mattel), Auto Art, UT, Maisto, Chrono, Minichamps, Motorbox... Minichamps and CMC made some of the very finest but expect to pay from $45 to $250 for these. My CMC Mercedes cars are some of my favorites.

I collected Corgi die cast models as a kid, had about 100 pieces. Took frighteningly good care of them - my daily "play" cars were Matchboxes. Sold the collection off in the early 1990s to fund a new home. Made a many thousands of dollars contribution to the down payment.

For what it's worth, my very first "large" Matchbox was a King Size Binz ambulance. I started in on Mercedes at a very young age. This would have been in 1969.

Mercedes Benz Ambulance (K6 K-26 K-63)

I have far too many irons in the fire to get caught up with die cast cars or models, although it would be fun. I'll watch you guys and live vicariously through you...

I stopped collecting years ago when the days, weeks, and years began to get shorter. You must have had quite a collection.

After watching this I now want one!! Has to be a green C140 though my OCD would become unhinged if the model did not match the car outside
:saucer:

Not that I’m a collector, but I have started buying 1:18 models which are similar to cars I own or have owned.
The three black MB models are OTTO cars while the Mercury Cougar is an older Sun Star model. Yes, I did own a 1968 Cougar XR7 many years ago 😀. 647D4DDE-F07A-42FE-9356-3422463B7B0F.jpeg

Nice collection there especially the mbs. These are at my brothers. Im taking my sl back :D

I'd say you buy it, take it apart (shouldn't be a problem for you, since you take every vehicle apart anyway :thumbsup2: ) and have it painted your matching green?

A large part of the value in my collection was the weird and unusual pieces I had. My Mom cleaned out a local department store's inventory of Corgis when they went out of business, and the majority of them were the less desired models that had languished in the display case. Some really basic ones like an orange Heinkel that had no movable parts other than the wheels. A very basic model, and as a result, not highly prized by most kids because it didn't have any features.

When I went to sell my collection this was one of the best of the bunch according to the guy who I sold to, mainly because they're were very few around and the ones that were didn't have the box and were in poor condition. Heck, everyone had the Batmobile, right? (I didn't, but I did have the Green Hornet's "Black Beauty" car with the missiles that shot out of the grille and the flying TV cameras that flew out of the trunk.)
